Now Cat 4 Michael

Do you not get the Weather Channel? Jim Cantore is in Panama City. Or are you just not watching it?

I'm at work like most people on a Wednesday morning. I've been following this post since it obviously has meaning to me. Again, I see heavy winds and rain but we won't know the extent until it hits land.

If you can get to warchant.com you can get to weather.com.

IT'S GOING TO BE BAD. CANCEL YOUR TRIP.

I have a friend who is a Deputy in Walton County. Some idiot (I’m keeping it pc) drove his Jeep onto the beach this morning. We told her to save the Jeep and let the idiot go. People are really stupid.

Are you speaking the english language?! Try keeping it on topic or zip it! Did I speak clearly enough? Now, back to the topic at hand. I am thinking the beaches have sustained heavy winds and rain in the past. If by chance PCB doesn't get a direct hit, is there a chance the aftermath would be restored by Saturday?

You should rebook your vacation to New Zealand.

Besides the absolute devastation they expect for PCB, power will not be restored for several weeks, if not more. Your vacation is toast.

Ignore everyone, your trip will be fine. Also, if you have toddlers and/or small dog, plan a night picnic in a swamp and bring the toys so they can splash around in the water a little bit.

Just checking out the local radar. A big band's about to hit Tally here soon.

Meanwhile I have some dude repeatedly posting updates of buoys that are measuring top winds at 66 knots.

Something is off with the readings on those buoys I’m guessing.

It’s strange how the speeds hyped on TV I can’t seem to find on weather stations.
e.g. the hurricane that recently made landfall down at Ft Meyers. Eyewall passed over the airport which is very close to shore, but it’s readings weren’t close to what was being touted on TV. Maybe it’s limits on the equipment, but I would have figured the airport anemometer could read 100mph.

Mike's Weather Page (that's the name) is the place to go to track....

Scary how strong this storm has gotten overnight...pressure is down to 926 (Was 983 at 11 last night).....For comparison Andrew was at 922.....

The area that takes a direct hit likely will never be the same (looks like it was wobbling to the east on the radar during Mike's 9am update (he does live facebook, provides just facts, not weatherman drama)

How about I just ignore you. I appreciate everyone who is providing some substance pertaining to this storm.

I hope that the exotic snakes in attractions in PCB don't get loose like they did during Andrew!

Real worried about my hometown of Bristol.

Poor folks in Eastpoint that just had to deal with the bad wildfire a few months ago.

If you haven’t cancelled your trip yet, then you are ignoring all the responses in this thread.

PCB is about to be destroyed.
Here's what some of South Florida in the direct path of Andrew looked like afterward:

Rather than being snarky about the way you're asking questions, I'll offer a productive suggestion.

Pack supplies and some boots, come down to the panhandle on Sunday and help your brothers and sisters out. I'm sure volunteers will be needed for quite a while.
While beach vacays can be rescheduled, these folks homes, livelihoods, and families cannot.

After Sandy I spent 3 or 4 weekends volunteering on Staten Island. The damage and emotional trauma changed my appreciation for a lot of things. Time well spent.

My hard headed brother stayed at his house in Shell Point. More than a little worried at this point. Please everyone that decided to stay, be safe and hunker down , this thing is a monster.

Pressure at 920 would certainly put it at cat 5 right?

Category is based on wind speed and not pressure. Typically they correlate but often times wind speeds lag pressure changes. So, pressure could drop to about 920 and wind speeds not pick up immediately. With the storm so close to land at this point, if there is a pressure drop, the winds might not pick up enough to get to Cat5 strength. Either way, this is a monster storm and it will set records which will hopefully stand for a long time.

Hoosier, as someone who rode out Opal in 95 in Panama City, I’ll weigh in. The city was shut down for several weeks after Opal and Michael is a bigger storm about to make a direct hit on PC. Opal hit about 75 miles to the west.

If you're serious, spend a few minutes & look online at pics from Hurricane Ivan in Pensacola from 2004. It should give you at least some idea what things will be like in Panama City.
Had a buddy who lived on the beach in Pensacola when Ivan roared in. IIRC, nobody (including residents) was allowed back on the island for a few days; when he did get back out there a few days later to "begin to restore things" he started with shoveling a foot or so of sand out of the house.

Dude...Shell Pt is basically no man's land and bathtub in the most basic rainy conditions. Im sure your brother will be fine, but will have some stories to tell. He might have to get out by boat. Isnt it only1 rd in and out and surrounded by St Marks and Appalach Forest land?

If this is remotely in the Andrew realm, recovery in PC, PCB and Apalachicola and other Big Bend locations will not be measured in days or weeks, but in months and years. The Keys are still recovering from Hurricane Irma from September of last year, and this monster is much worse. Hell, parts of Homestead, Florida City and Naranja after Andrew were never rebuilt....shells of destroyed homes visible from the Turnpike Extension for years...many, many years. Andrew was mostly a wind event except in Cutler Bay and Palmetto Bay, this will be wind and surge, this is going to be awful....I mean landscape altering awful...historically bad.

He'll be lucky to live. I was in Shell Point Beach three weeks ago...there's a reason houses are up 30 feet off the ground.

If the weather channel bugs out you know its bad. If it was Cantore...you already dead.

Restored by Saturday...lol.
