Ozark Season 2 (Spoilers, or so I’m told)

I like Jason Bateman quite a bit. He can easily be a nice, likeable, aloof character then be a real prick that you want to punch in the face.

Can’t wait for season 2. Best quote I’ve seen in a TV show in awhile came last year. When she tells the kids:

“ Your father's laundering money for a Mexican drug cartel. I shit you not.”

Took a flyer on Season 1 and really liked it. Been waiting for Season 2 for a while. Let down that they pushed the release date back two weeks... to the first weekend of college football.

The first season was pretty captivating, and we'll definitely tune in for season 2. That said, these dystopian shows are really starting to wear on me. I guess that's what I like about Succession - it's got some silly nonsense thrown in for good measure.

If you haven't seen it, watch The Gift. It's on Netflix now I think...good slow burn suspense/thriller.

I didn't know what I thought of it. I liked it enough that I'll watch Season 2 though. I generally liked the performances, and the premise. It kind of dragged at times though.

It's sort of a Breaking Bad-light. Which which can still be pretty decent. It could have used a little more humor or style in it, and sometimes it really lacked the forward momentum of Breaking Bad (at least the later seasons). I also had a little bit of trouble latching in on any of the characters, trying to figure out who to sympathize with or relate to and why. There isn't really an easy way in on the characters for me, they're written a little bit all over the board. I don't mind rooting for a "bad buy", but I'm just not finding a reason to care too much about anyone. It didn't cross it, but it was a little close to the edge on the question I ask myself every time I've watched 5-6 episodes of something: "Do you really care what happens next?".

But it was good enough that I'll check out Season 2, and it was good enough that I don't think it would take a crazy jump to cross the line from pretty good to really good. But if it goes the other way, I'll probably bail after a few more episodes. I think the premise, the setting, the actors, all have the potential to be even better.

Only complaint is that it might move a bit too fast. We’ll see how this season goes. Really enjoyed the first.

Almost like they thought they had only one season, so they rushed the arc.
As a plot device I really didn't like the time crunch Bateman was put under. He wasn't being treated as valuable as he was, by someone who truly knew his value. Putting him under a rush just makes it more likely the money would be lost.

glad they didn't drown the daughter

That’s exactly what I have thought.

They need to tone it down & slow it just a tad. Unlike the poster above, I think the beauty of Breaking Bad was the believability of it. The show stayed at a good pace & had a lot realism that gets lost in some shows these days.

Agree with that. I thought Ozark dragged at times because of how quickly it moved on to the next development. There wasn't much time to really chew on "woah, how is this going to work out" and see it percolate and get invested by the time you wrapped your head around it, it was on to something else. It was like the Chekov's gun thing...if you put a gun on the table in the first act, you have to fire it in the third act. Ozark was basically pulling the trigger while it was being set down. So sometimes I felt like ok what's next, what's next, how many more episodes?

That's a good point that it would be improved greatly by slowing down and letting some stuff play out. I mean, not to be spoilery, but at the end of Season 1 they basically set up an intriguing scenario that would have easily formed the background for a full season, if not two, and then immediately ended it as soon as they set it up. I just don't get that.

Letting the stories develop would help the characters too, instead of them having to consistently ricochet around.

Watched the first episode of the 2nd season. I thought it was good, but did feel like it dragged a bit. Still, the episode did open up new story arcs and characters for the season.

Through 6 episodes, good season thus far. New characters are solid and continue the story, while the family still cant seem to catch a break

What I have found with these Netflix, etc shows the writing is actually really good and requires some level of thought. You turn on any major network and watch a show today and can predict what happens before it happens. Except for sports I don't even watch network TV anymore.

Definitely some ebbs and flows in Season 2. Happy Petty and Cade are done... couldn't stand either of them.

This is really taking a Breaking Bad kind of shape to me. The last 15 minutes of this season especially. Can't wait for Season 3!

Agreed on Petty and Cade. Both drove me nuts. I'm glad Mason is gone, too.

I think I counted 3 "You have 24 hours" threats against Marty this year, the guy cannot catch a break.

I was shocked that Darlene got the better of Jacob Snell. His arc was softening on me this year, he was the more reasonable of the two.

The biggest shift in the show was Wendy taking over as the decision maker and the big balls on the show. Marty was really second fiddle this year, I really enjoyed how much they changed Wendy. She was a wet blanket last year, awful character. This year, she was shrewd, calculating, and a master manipulator. She really did most of the work to get the Casino pushed through.

Rachel had the most disappointing arc. She was a complete 180 from last year, in the wrong way.

Season 3 could be a lot of fun, could also be a complete mess.

I agree with almost all that. Really felt sorry for Jacob. Dude saw the writing, knew what his obstacle was in actually staying alive, but he was a step too slow.

Some interesting topics could be developed for Season 3.

  • Does Charlotte follow Wyatt to Mizzou?
  • Do they (Marty and Wendy) replace her with Ruth and Three?
  • Does Frank Cosgrove (pretty lazy naming there by the writers, i.e., Ken Cosgrove from MadMen) replace the Snells as a major roadblock to getting the casino going?
  • What happens with Darlene and Zeke, is that a subplot for Wendy?
  • Do Wendy and Wilkes get in to bed together - yes, a dual metaphore?
  • Does Petty's former co-worker/lover come looking for him?
  • Rachel... is a fling with Marty enough to get her to sober up?
  • Does Jonah step up and start running more of the business, or providing an additional laundering point?

  • God, I would love it if they found a way to write Charlotte off the show. She can take Wyatt with her, he's worthless.
  • I'm sure Wendy will go head to head with Darlene, even though getting rid of the kid is the best thing for Marty and Wendy.
  • Not sure about Wilkes, he's a sneaky one. Lots of potential there
  • I would not be surprised if we get another jealous lover angle involving Petty's past.
  • I almost forgot about Jonah, loved how he jumped in and came to the rescue this year. Hope he's a bigger part of Season 3.
  • Season 3 will almost certainly revolve around the Kansas City Mob.
  • I'm not sure Rachel is salvageable at this point ,but who knows.

Good recaps @GoNolesTX and @dmm5157

One angle I think will be interesting is what happens with the FBI and the Snell's property. One agent did find a burnt poppy plant and bagged it as evidence. Does that lead to a property seizure or something along those lines putting the casino project in jeopardy.

Someone mentioned blue- does this whole show have a blue filter?

I really enjoyed season 2. I liked almost every episode.

Are riverboats in Missouri really that small? The casinos in tunica are massive

Definitely has a blue filter. Really hard to watch on TV outside in bright light. I had to turn brightness way way up to see the darker scenes.

Yeah...me too. It was awful.

I've been to a couple in KC and they are not that small. They're massive structures like in Shreveport. I'm sure they're some on the east side of Missouri that are vintage paddle boats though.

Just finished season 2. Very good. Curious to see where season 3 goes.

Will be curious to see how Ruth reacts to daddy being killed and also finding out she won’t be getting the business.

Seems the cartel could solve the mob issue fairly quickly. I mean they can’t have them running around blowing up the offices of their most important partner.

Just binged all 10 episodes today. I thought it was solid. Really sets up an intriguing season 3 (Mob v. Cartel). I could have done without the Mason and Rachel story arcs. Just seemed like filler and the writers could have gotten the same result by focusing more on the other characters and their relationships with each other.

Agreed on Mason. I had totally forgotten about him from Season 1. I think the Rachel arc was necessary from a "getting Petty closer" perspective though.

Drawback of Netflix series: having to wait 364 days for the next season to come out.

Yeah, as I watched episode 7, the Mason-centric one, I kept feeling like this was some unnecessary filler to meet the production contract.

Agree with GoNoles that Rachel's story moved the plot along, and I like the actress. But damn, girl, don't you own another bra?
