The Official 2018 World Cup Thread...

Nice win for Senegal, never seen them play but really enjoyed their style of play (minus milking the clock, but I suppose that’s simply smart strategy).

Next up... Go Egypt!!

So is Mo Salah worthy of all the hype he's been getting? I dont follow epl or the european leagues, so I had no clue who he was until the WC.

In a word, yes. Saleh led the Premier League in goals with 32 for Liverpool.
Wow really? I have to pick a team and follow them next season. Played soccer all the way through high school and follow the usmnt and Orlando city, so I need to get into more on a global scale.

I did read the other day how Mo is helping the strained race relations in the uk, with the youth becoming huge fans of his and wearing his jerseys, etc. Thought that was cool.

Hop on aboard the Chelsea train! There's plenty of room. :)

Don’t know what the laws say, but as a watcher I see injured players being allowed in during run of play all the time. No need to wait for a stoppage if no sub is involved.
The official has to allow the player back on and did so this time in the middle of a counter attack. Poor discretion on his part, but as Alexi Lalas said, Poland is at fault for poor field awareness.

Keeper should have seen the Senegalese player coming from 30 yards away

Weird situation and Poland momentary lapse in awareness cost them

I like how group H is shaping up!

He was pretty special this year. He is fast, can dribble, and has a good sense of when to make runs. The Liverpool system seems to suit him to a T. He nearly doubled his expected goal per 90 minutes and more than doubled his actual goals. We will see if he can keep it up or if he was a one-season wonder.

This group A of Russia, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Uruguay has to be one of the worst? Did Russia get the home cooking? A part of me wants them not to advance...lol

From what I understand the home country is always in Group A and put in the same "pot" as the top teams. Portugal and Spain loved that they were put in Group B meaning that they got to play one of the teams from Group A as Russia does not scare anyone. It also makes the 2026 interesting because you will have 3 home countries. But it is the expanded tournament so you will have more groups.

I lurk on this thread but have zero interest in watching without a rooting interest. As somebody that does not follow soccer but once every four years what are the big factors as to why the US did not make the tourney? Certainly they are better than some of the teams that did make it.

The opinions/answers to this question could really be a thread of its own.

Big embarrassing upset losses in qualifying in our group (north and central america) and a couple of unlikely scenarios in other games that had to happen in an precise fashion. It was crazy and unbelievable and sad. We should've never been in that situation in the 1st place and led to a shakeup and firings.

GG Mike,
Trying to answer your question w/o getting into too much politics or too deep, first keep in mind that just like the NCAA Tournament even though there are 32 teams in the WC that doesnt mean its the 32 best teams.

The world is divided into confederations that pretty much match up to continents. Each confederation gets a certain amount of participants and they hold qualifying campaigns to see who will make it to the WC from their confederation. It is not equally divided. Europe gets the most, South America gets a good many compared to the number of countries. North America gets 4 or 5.

The USA should always qualify for the WC under the current state of competition in that the rest of our confederation does not have anywhere near the resources, players, etc to compete. But through a combination of players under performing and the coaches not finding or developing talent we missed out on the WC on the last day of qualifying. Think FSU baseball needing a win on the road at Arkansas St. to make a tournament and winding up losing. It has caused a lot of soul searching and rethinking of the entire soccer system in our country.

We'd have probably made it if we could've played either Trinidad OR Tobago, but the power of their combined forces was too much for us to handle.

You had me at think FSU baseball !!!!

It should also be noted that teams like Iceland qualified from UEFA but not Italy and the Netherlands.

That's not an excuse for the USMNT - the way organized soccer is run and players are developed in the US is flawed and we've underachieved for far too long (1994 was supposed to be the turning point for US soccer ... as were a few other years). Until we have folks from all socioeconomic groups playing it, and seeing it as a viable path to wealth, it'll likely continue to flounder as a sport for suburbanites and/or certain ethnicities.

Hopefully this most recent failure is our 30-0 WF moment.

Missed the first 79 mins of the Russia-Egypt match.. what the heck happened?

If it's any consolation, teams like USA and Italy will make the WC in 2026 because of the expanded field. On the other hand, team worse than Saudi Arabia will too.

Egypt deserve that after they voluntarily set up their camp in the capital of Chechnya. Doesn't hurt me to see them basically already eliminated.

Whoa...England are in Russia
Whoa...Drinking all your vodka
Whoa...England going all the way!

I'm not an England supporter, but I can appreciate a good chant.

This part just came out a few hours ago:

Stems from this:

And a myriad of other stories, including Egypt choosing Grozny as their camp base. Really want to see some amazing stories? Just google Ramzan Kadyrov. He's the Chechen leader (and defacto mayor of Grozny). He's not really a bastion of humanity, put it that way. And it's not coincidence that Egypt picked this site when give some 60-ish sites by FIFA to choose from.
