The Official 2018 World Cup Thread...

Really don't care about soccer; just not my thing. I was in Nuremberg a few weeks ago and I guess this year their soccer club is good. The stadium was across the street from my hotel and they had a game one of the days I was there. Left my hotel at around 1100 and when I came back at 1800 they were still going crazy. It was like a monster CFB game. People were everywhere just drinking and celebrating.
Yea I know cool story; but it was really cool to see. Saw a couple of young kids carrying sod. I guess the game was against their rival and when I asked the bartender who they played, was it a big game etc. I liked the way he described it he called it an "honor game" Anyways I could certainly appreciate their passion.

The Germans didn't display much "honor" yesterday. :p

This Sweden/South Korea game is a very entertaining 0-0 game so far. More fouls than most full-time games. Most chances for both sides in one half than "normal" 0-0 games. Both teams realize 3 points could set them up to steal a knockout round spot from Germany.

And yes it's a hot take, but it's true...Zlatan would've finished at least 2 of those Swedish chances.

This is the first world cup with instant replay (VAR), right?

Not a fan of it (just as I don't like how MLS uses it -- or NFL, NBA, or CFB for that matter).

Do any of the top leagues in Europe or the champions league use VAR?

It just affected this match!

Yep that prompted my question - esp the delay in calling for the replay.

At least they made the decision quickly. If it were NFL or college FB there would have been a 4 min review pause.

Yes, first WC with it. And so far, I'd say it's been a success, because it's been used correctly, strictly, and very efficiently.

I'm pretty sure the Europa League used it this season. And the Champions League starts using it next season, IIRC.

So what are the applications?
Ball across goal line?
Ball out of bounds?
Maradona handball?

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-c...antreferee-systemis-used-fifa-world-cup-2018/

"VAR only intervenes in the course of a match when the officials have made a 'clear and obvious error' in one of four key areas: goals, penalties, straight red cards and mistaken identity. The system is restricted to these areas in order to minimise disruption to the flow of the game."

Panama holding their own in their debut. Belgium missing a couple of golden opportunities. Curious to see adjustments coming out of half, if Panama keeps their composure or if Belgium shows world class finishing with Lukaku and Mertens.

If there's any team in this tournament I should support, it would be Belgium with their two Chelsea stars...Hazard & Courtois. So far, they continue to underwhelm though despite the ample talent of this "Golden Generation" of players.

Belgium not playing like they deserve high ranking.

Be happy. Your boy Lukaku just scored!

TWICE!!

Just read his Players Tribune piece. Even bigger fan of his now. (Also... inferences from his entry perfectly illustrate why USA will not be the world soccer power they aspire to be.)

Anyone else disturbed by the fact the U.S. couldn't finish ahead of Panama to qualify for the WC?

See above partially, but also... stop bringing up old ish.

Just saw this on yahoo. Typical of Mexico. I find this so ironic too. Mainly because soccer in the US tries to be as progressive as possible, and this basically slaps the MLS and those fans right in the face. The latest event of this occurring was the Mexican fans chanting it at the LAFC home game a month ago or so.

Growing up in Dallas, the word the article cites is a) not what is chanted and b) not what they show it to mean. The word commonly chanted in my 'hood starts with a "c" and ends with an "ero."

But yeah, a $30k fine seems appropriate for a continued mandate of fan behavior being violated.

Haven't been able to catch nearly as many ManU games as I'd like this spring/summer... has Rashford's form been that lacking that he isn't in the 11?
I think it’s that he’s more an out and out striker, and unless they play w/2 up top, he’s always likely going to be 2nd fiddle to Harry Kane...or maybe Gareth Southgate just (curiously) prefers Sterling.

I saw a lot more egregious physicality occurring in the box by Switzerland yesterday than what Tunisia just got a PK for.

Wow England had a great chance with the goalie crawling around away from the net.
Bullet dodged by Tunisia!

Why isn't Tunisia getting called for American football-style tackling in the box?

Seems to me that this game is either going to be one where England keep peppering the goal and go on to win 3-1 or they rue their chances and get stuck with a painful draw. The old England would surely run out of ideas and draw but I think this squad will find a way to get a couple more.
