Softball FSU will lean on freshmen Ashtyn Danley, Mimi Gooden at Oklahoma

Florida State’s road to a return trip to the Women’s College World Series wasn’t going to be easy, not as a No. 15 seed nationally and being paired up with No. 2 seed Oklahoma. But now the challenge is even tougher with Allison Royalty sidelined due to injury.

Royalty left FSU’s game against Auburn on Sunday with what appeared to be a back injury. The senior right-hander went 7-5 with a 3.75 ERA, recording 38 strikeouts with 33 walks in 69 innings.

Baseball FSU mashing home runs at a historic pace this season

After hitting just 55 homers in 2023, this FSU baseball team is hitting homers at a historic rate. The 2024 Seminoles are on pace to average the most homers per game in program history (1.91 per game at the moment) and this is the first team in program history with four players with 13+ homers.

Football Recruiting Recruiting Update: Four-star OL Cortez Smith will likely no longer take FSU OV

Four-star offensive guard prospect Cortez Smith will likely no longer be officially visiting FSU.

Smith told The Osceola early in March that he would be officially visiting Florida State on June 14th but at least one source is indicating that he will no longer be taking this visit. Instead, it appears he will be officially visiting Georgia Tech on June 14th. While we cannot 100% confirm this at this time, Smith is set to announce his commitment on July 20th and Florida State is not among the finalists despite previously having an official visit set, which further suggests that this visit is no longer taking place.

It is very possible that with the prospects along the offensive line that Florida State is now is contention for, that Smith has moved down Florida State's board.

Post a culinary specialty from your city or region . . .

I will start it off with a post about Quad City Style pizza. For those of you who don't know (which is probably many Floridians) the Quad Cities are a metro area of around 400,000 people straddling the Mississippi River between Iowa and Illinois with Davenport, Iowa being the largest city.

Downtown-Davenport2.jpg

The Quad Cities culinary claim to fame (other than being the birthplace of sliced bread and taco pizza) is the aforementioned Quad City Style pie (one of your board regulars, @FSUTribe76 actually made one from scratch!)

Unique characteristics of this pie are: cut into rectangles with giant kitchen shears rather than sliced into triangles, a chewy crust with a hint of molasses, toppings like meat, veggies etc. always go UNDER the cheese, a spicy tomato sauce but used in very small quantities, utilizes very finely ground sausage that is spiced with fennel, fresh white mozzarella typically procured locally). Here is a more definitive article on the style if curious from Food & Wine magazine.

Here is a pic from my favorite QC Style pizza place, called Uncle Bill's"

Here is a pie from what most claim is the original QC Style parlor, Frank's Napoli:

If you are ever in our neck of the woods (or in Chicago, where several QC Style places have opened) make sure to grab yourself a pie and enjoy a unique regional pizza varietal!

I am anxious to see/read about your city or region's specialties.

Bon Appetit!

Tennis FSU's Cornut-Chauvinc, Dous-Karpenschif advance at NCAA Doubles Championship

FSU sports information:

Florida State’s Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc and Joshua Dous-Karpenschif advanced to the second round of the NCAA Doubles Championship on Tuesday afternoon after Tennessee’s pair retired during the second set. Cornut-Chauvinc’s singles season came to an end after a three-set battle in the second round.

“Antoine and Joshua played incredibly sharp in the first set and held strong on the deuce points that helped establish their rhythm before the unfortunate retiring of Tennessee’s pair,” head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. “Antoine has had an unbelievable singles career here at Florida State, becoming a two-time All-American, clinching this year’s ACC Championship, and being one of the most special players the program has ever seen.”

The Lyon, France, natives came out firing on all cylinders, quickly gaining a 4-1 first-set lead before serving out a 6-3 victory. The duo was able to snatch two service breaks in the first set before Johannus Monday and Angel Diaz retired during the second set at 1-1.

This marks the second time this matchup was unfinished in just two weeks after a thrilling 6-6 tiebreaker back in Knoxville during the third round of the NCAA Tournament was left abandoned after Florida State earned the doubles point on Courts 2 and 3.

Cornut-Chauvinc began his singles match with a dominant 6-2 first set and climbed from 3-1 down back to 3-3 in the second set. Illinois’ Karlis Ozolins pushed Cornut-Chauvinc to a third set before pulling away.

Cornut-Chauvinc finishes his collegiate singles career as one the most accomplished Seminoles in the program’s history. He was named 2024 ACC Player of the Year, the 2024 ACC Championship MVP after winning five straight games to clinch FSU’s first ACC championship, and is a two-time All-ACC Singles First Team selection.

Cornut-Chauvinc and Dous-Karpenschif advance to the round of 16 and will face the winner of the match between No. 23 Jacob Bickersteth and Gavin Young of Michigan and No. 33 Gianluca Brunkow and Pablo Masjuan of UC Santa Barbara on Wednesday afternoon.

NCAA Men’s Tennis Doubles Championship Round of 32:
#13 Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc/Joshua Dous-Karpenschif (FSU) vs. #6 Johannus Monday/Angel Diaz (UT) 6-3, 1-1, (UT retired)

NCAA Men’s Tennis Singles Championship Round of 32:
#26 Karlis Ozolins (UIUC) def. #4 Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc (FSU) 2-6, 6-3, 6-2

I’ll never count out a Lonni coached team. . .

But we sure need our bats to dominate 1-9 in the lineup to help out our pitchers vs OK. Obviously none of us know if Reid will be available at all, or how she will do even if she is. The young pitchers sure look to have all the tools, but experience and consistency is not with them right now.

So, just outscore them. Let’s put up 15 each game and give them a lot of cushion to work with.

Baseball Live Updates: FSU vs. Georgia Tech in ACC Tournament (Tuesday, 3 p.m. on ACC Network)

After a stunning one-year absence from the ACC Tournament, the Florida State baseball team is back where it belongs in the postseason.

The Seminoles (39-14, 17-12 in ACC) earned the No. 5 seed in the ACC Tournament, which is being held this week at Truist Field in Charlotte, N.C. That placed them in Pool D along with No. 4 seed Virginia (40-14, 18-12) and No. 9 seed Georgia Tech (31-21, 15-15). The winner of the pool advances to the semifinals Saturday vs. the winner of Pool A and if all three teams are 1-1, the highest seed (UVA) advances.

FSU kicks off pool play Tuesday at 3 p.m. when it takes on GT on ACC Network in a rematch of last weekend's final series of the regular season. FSU took two of three from the Yellow Jackets last weekend at Howser, nearly sweeping the Yellow Jackets before GT rallied in the final game on Saturday after it was delayed for over 21 hours.

FSU will start junior right-handed pitcher Conner Whittaker for its opening game in the ACC Tournament. Whittaker, who is still ramping his pitch count back up after missing time to an injury and moving out of the weekend rotation, has a 4-0 record and 5.27 ERA this season.

He threw two scoreless innings out of the bullpen Friday vs. GT, allowing two hits and a walk but striking out a pair.

GT will start freshman righty Tate McKee (7.07 ERA over 42 innings) vs. the Seminoles. FSU tagged him for two runs (both earned) on three hits over 1.1 innings last Friday.

With how the ACC Tournament pool-play format works, FSU needs to beat GT Tuesday or it will not be able to advance to semifinals and Friday's 11 a.m. game vs. Virginia will not matter in those terms. If FSU wins Tuesday, the winner of Friday's game will win the pool and advance to semifinals.

Sports Business Amelia Island Part I: House v NCAA will be "seismic shift" in collegiate athletics

There was drama at the Spring ACC Meetings on Amelia Island and the ACC v The Florida State Board of Trustees and Clemson University wasn't the half of it.
On Monday, news broke that the UNC Board of Trustees were calling an emergency closed door meeting that UNC AD Bubba Cunningham had to leave the Island to attend as the trustees were concerned about the budget and concerns about the revenue gap between the ACC and the SEC and BIG 10. But the most dramatic news was a two-page document obtained by Yahoo Sports, the parent company of TheOsceola.com, that gave details on a proposed settlement with plaintiff attorneys, the NCAA and the Power 5 conferences to resolve three pending anti-trust cases the first of which is scheduled to go before the court in January of 2025. Based on the Supreme Court's most recent 9-0 lruling against the NCAA, legal experts believe the NCAA and Conferences should accept the settlement agreement, which will cost $2.66 billion in back compensation to student-athletes and as much as $30 million per year per school in shared revenues and expanded scholarship costs.

Grading the room - Offense

QB

DJ Uiagalelei - (SR)
Brock Glenn - (SO)
Luke Kromenhoek -(FR)
Trevor Jackson - (FR)
Tramell Jones - (FR) (Committed to FSU)

Comments: GRADE A-
If Glenn stays for the 2025 season the Seminoles should have as good of a quarterback room as they have had in a long time. The talent level at the position has really been upgraded since Mike Norvell took over. You never know what these guys will do but Glenn showed last year in the Orange Bowl the ability to be a starter down the road for FSU. He made some nice throws even though he was put in a terrible position. Kromenhoek is one of the most gifted quarterbacks FSU has had in a long time. Jackson was a steal, getting him to walk on. Jones will have time to develop.

Options 2026 Class: Faizon Brandon - 6-4, 190 (5-Star), Brady Smigiel (Newbury Park CA) (4-Star), Romin Seymour (3-Star)

I have seen Brandon and Seymour in person. I like Brandon but am shocked at how high the kid is ranked. I would have never expected him to be ranked as the top signal caller in the country. Seymour has a ton of potential. He has some nice tools to work with.

RB

Lawrance Toafili (SR)
Samuel Singleton (FR)
Kam Davis (FR)
Micahi Danzy (FR)
Roydell Williams (SR)

2025 Class - Byron Louis (FR)

Comments: GRADE A-
One thing Norvell has shown as head coach is the ability to scout, evaluate and develop running backs. I doubt any other program has had multiple walk-ons end up scholarship players at other schools. Danzy, Davis and if FSU lands Louis is going to be an elite room in 2025-2026. Singleton showed some promise this spring. I expect FSU to sign two backs in the 2025 class. Landing Louis would be huge. Anything above that would be icing on the cake.

Options 2026 Class: Derrek Cooper - Chaminade - FSU leads for Cooper. He is in the same class of back as Sony Michel, Dalvin Cook and Derrick Henry IMHO. He will be a five-star, elite player. If FSU lands Louis in 2025 and Cooper in 2026, they will have the best backfield in the ACC while both are in college.

TE

Kyle Morlock (SR)
Jerrale Powers (SO)
Brian Courtney (JR)
Jackson West (JR)
Landen Thomas (FR)

2025 Class - Hollis Davidson (FR)

Comments: Grade B
- Under Norvell the TE position is always going to be important. They got it right with Jaheim Bell last year. It will be interesting to see how this room develops. West just did not look athletic to me in the spring game. Morlock has one year and is solid at best. We have no idea what Powers brings. Courtney is a body. So this room comes down to Landen Thomas developing into a player. I think he has very good upside. Davidson would be right up there with Thomas. If any of the other guys can develop this room is fine. Landing Elyiss Williams would be the game changer. This grade would go from B to A quickly ... especially if you are landing Davidson as well.

Options 2026 Class: None at this time

WR

Jakhi Douglas (SR)
Destyn Hill (FR-Med RS)
Kentron Poitier (SR)
Deuce Spann (SR)
Hykeem Williams (SO)
Darion Williamson (SR)
Lawayne McCoy (FR)
BJ Gibson (FR)
Camdon Frier (FR)
Elijah Moore (FR)
Malik Benson (SR)
Jalen Brown (SO)

2025 - Joshua Moore (FR)

Comments: Grade B+++
- FSU has killed it in the transfer portal at WR with Keon Coleman, Johnny Wilson and now what looks to be another star in Malik Benson. Hykeem Williams flashed at times last year. He is a great blocking receiver. He can still become a No. 1, top-rated receiver. Now it is up to him. After that the older guys have not developed. Kentron Poitier is a good No. 3. He could be a No. 2 this year. Hill is out for the season. I think FSU sits great at the slot with Frier, Gibson and McCoy. Adding Moore would be a plus. Now they need to land one of Brown, Wiley, McCutcheon or Lockett. Just land one and this grade goes to A. I feel FSU has a legit shot at Brown. He just put out his top four and FSU was one of the schools.

Options 2026 - Efrem White - Vero Beach (Committed), Calvin Russell (Miami Northwestern), Malachi Toney (American H-Committed to Miami)

OL

Julian Armella-(SO)
Jeremiah Byers-(SR)
Jaylen Early-(FR)
Bryson Estes-(JR)
Keiondre Jones-(SR)
Andre Otto -(FR)
Robert Scott-(SR)
Thomas Shrader-(SR)
Luke Simmons-(FR)
Maurice Smith-(SR)
Darius Washington-(SR)
Tye Hylton (FR)
Jayden Todd (FR)
Manassse Itete-(FR)
Jonathan Daniels (FR)
Jacob Rizy (SR)
Richie Leonard (SR)
TJ Ferguson (JR)

Solomon Thomas - OT/OG (Committed to FSU)

2025 Class -
Josh Petty (OT), Ziyare Addison (OT), Peyton Joseph (OG), Max Buchanan (C)

Comments: Grade A
- Under coach Alex Atkins the OL has improved its play on the field since Day 1. The high school and portal linemen have been a mixed bag so far. That is expected when you are trying to rebuild an OL that was a mess early on. It takes time and about 4-5 classes to really get the OL to where you want it as a program. Would like to see Early, Armella, Otto and Simmons take the next step. Add in Thomas, Petty, Addison, Joseph and Buchanan and what was once a major weakness will become a strength in 2025. FSU is in good shape on the OL, which outside of QB the most important position group on offense is if not the entire team.

Options 2026 OT Micah Smith - 6-5, 305 (Vero Beach)

Football AD Michael Alford discusses CFP snub, FSU's relationship with ACC on SiriusXM interview

Baseball FSU powers its way to win over Georgia Tech in ACC Tourney opener

FSU used four home runs, 13 hits and a clutch save from ace Jamie Arnold to beat Georgia Tech 12-9 in its ACC Tournament opener this afternoon.

FSU's game vs. Virginia Friday at 11 a.m. is essentially an ACC Quarterfinal game now and may also determine whether FSU can earn a top-eight national seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Golf PGSF FedEx Cup Week 20: The PGA Championship

PGA CHAMPIONSHIP '24: A hole-by-hole look at Valhalla

The season’s second major championship is here – and there's no shortage of exciting storylines as the TOUR returns to the Bluegrass State.
This year’s PGA Championship features a hearty 1-2 punch of Scottie Scheffler – returning to action after the birth of his first child – and Rory McIlroy, who's arriving in Kentucky with momentum after Sunday’s Wells Fargo Championship victory – near the top of the board in terms of favorites.
Valhalla Golf Club, now lengthened and completely renovated, will make for a solid championship test once again, with Mother Nature sure to have her say as well.

Whether it’s someone seeking their first major, or Scheffler or McIlroy looking to add to their legacy (or even Jordan Spieth, eyeing the final leg of the career Grand Slam), it’s set to be a loaded week in Louisville.
Here’s everything else you need to know for the 106th PGA Championship.
FIELD NOTES: Scottie Scheffler is expected to return to action after nearly a month off as he and wife Meredith have been expecting the birth of their first child. Scheffler, who leads the way on TOUR in basically every key statistical category, has won four of his last five starts on TOUR, including his last two – the Masters and RBC Heritage… Rory McIlroy comes to Valhalla the same way he did in 2014 – off a win. McIlroy has won his last two TOUR starts (alongside Shane Lowry at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans and at last week’s Wells Fargo Championship) and now looks to break a decade-long drought without a major title. He won the last PGA contested at Valhalla 10 years ago… Jordan Spieth eyes the career Grand Slam once again. This will be his seventh attempt. His best finish at the PGA Championship – since he started chasing the Grand Slam – came in 2019 when he finished T3… returns to action for the first time since he made the cut at the Masters. Woods, who won the 2000 PGA Championship played at Valhalla, has three Wanamaker Trophies in his collection… Xander Schauffele leads the pack of notables eyeing their first major title, an illustrious group that includes Patrick Cantlay, Will Zalatoris, Tony Finau and Max Homa – to name a few. Schauffele had the 54-hole lead at the Wells Fargo but fell victim to McIlroy’s late surge; he’s now 3-for-9 in converting 54-hole leads on TOUR. He also held the 54-hole lead at this year’s PLAYERS (finishing T2) and is even hungrier to get the major monkey off his back and snap a nearly two-year winless drought on TOUR… Ludvig Åberg will make his PGA Championship debut. Åberg finishing runner-up at last month’s Masters, his first career major start, and now he’ll try to do one better at his latest major debut… Two-time PGA Championship winner Justin Thomas will tee it up at a major in his home state. Thomas has four top-15 finishes in nine starts so far this season… Chris Gotterup will make his PGA Championship debut after earning a spot in the PGA Championship thanks to his victory Sunday at the Myrtle Beach ClassicBrooks Koepka is the defending champion.

COURSE: Valhalla Golf Club, par 71, 7,609 yards. In comparison to the previous PGA Championship at Valhalla (in 2014), the Kentucky club has been completed renovated. An extensive fairway renovation was coordinated by the PGA of America in 2021: The project consisted of changing fairway turf and tees from bent grass to Zeon Zoysia. Zeon Zoysia fairways (requiring less water) allow for firm, fast playing conditions all season long, as opposed to the seasonality of bent grass. The PGA Championship team, with consultation from the Nicklaus Design team, decided to create new championship tees on Nos. 1, 12, 13, 14 and 18. The total length of the 2024 PGA Championship is 151 yards longer than 2014.

LAST TIME: Brooks Koepka won his third PGA Championship, topping Scottie Scheffler and Viktor Hovland by two shots at Oak Hill in Rochester, New York. Koepka joined Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods as the only players to win the Wanamaker Trophy three times in the stroke-play era. He had a one-shot lead through 54 holes and raced out of the gate, making birdie on Nos. 2-4. He made back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 6 and 7 but shot a 2-under 33 on his back nine to top Hovland and a hard-charging Scheffler, whose 5-under 65 tied for the low round of the day. Among those who also shot 65 in the final round were Cam Davis and Kurt Kitayama, who shared fourth place alongside Bryson DeChambeau. It marked a career-best major finish for both Davis and Kitayama.
McIlroy won the previous PGA Championship contested at Valhalla, in 2014.

RB Iverson Howard moves his commitment date back

RB Iverson Howard announced on Monday that he would choose between FSU, Michigan and Maryland and make a public commitment to one of those schools on Friday. By Monday night, it appears that he will now push that decision date back and will continue to weigh his options. Since he has not been on the Florida State campus during his recruitment, this probably works to the Seminoles advantage. I had a very hard time believing that he was going to commit to Florida State without having ever stepped foot on the FSU campus.

Golf FSU's Lottie Woad takes second at NCAA Championship Finals

FSU sports information:

CARLSBAD, Calif. – Sophomore All-American and National Player of the Year Finalist Lottie Woad finished in second place in the individual standings, and the Florida State Women's Golf team finished in a tie for 11th place in the team standings as stroke play in the NCAA Championship Finals on the North Course at the Omni La Costa Resort and Spa came to a close.

Woad’s finish is the best in school history and the second top five individual finish in school history at the NCAA Championship Finals. Florida State’s tied for 11th place finish in the team standing marks the seventh time in school history the Seminoles have finished in the top 12 in the team standings at the NCAA Championship. It marks the sixth time under coach Amy Bond that Florida State has finished in the top 12 in the final standings at the NCAA Championship Finals. Bond has led the Seminoles to a school-record six consecutive top 12 finishes. During that span of six years, Florida State has finished within the top 12 six different times (fifth in 2022 and 2023, ninth in 2021, and 12th in 2018, 2019 and 2024).

The top eight finishing teams in stroke play – Stanford, LSU, Texas A&M, Southern Cal, Clemson, Oregon, UCLA, and Auburn – advanced to the match play competition which begins Tuesday. Stanford faces Auburn, LSU faces Oregon, Texas A&M plays UCLA, and Southern Cal faces Clemson in the quarterfinals of match play on Tuesday.

Adela Cernousek of Texas A&M won the individual championship – the first individual title of her career – with a three-shot victory over Woad.

Woad earned the best finish with the lowest score and best score vs. par at the NCAA Championship Finals in school history. Woad’s overall score of 279 broke Charlotte Heath’s record 282 and set a new school record with her 9 under par score.

Woad’s score of 65 in the first round of the 2024 NCAA Championship is tied for the lowest single round score during her career, is tied for the lowest single round score in school history, and is the lowest single round score in the NCAA Championship in school history.

Woad’s score of 65 in the first round is just the seventh score in the 60’s by a Florida State golfer in the NCAA Tournament. Her second place finish the standings is her 16th career top-10 finish – tied for the fourth highest top-10 total in school history. Seminole All-American Matilda Castren is Florida State’s all-time leader with 24 career top-10 finishes as a Seminole.

Woad’s second career score of 65 makes her just the second player in school history with multiple career single round sores of 65. She (in the 2022 Schooner Fall Classic and the 2024 NCAA Championship) and Castren (in the 2016 Jim West Challenge and the 2017 Clemson Invitational) are the only two of the nine players in school history who have carded a single round score of 65 to accomplish the score multiple times as Seminoles.

Woad led the Seminoles with a 3 under par score of 69 in the final round. She totaled scores of 65-74-71-69 for her 9 under par total of 279. She birdied four of her final 10 holes as she posted her second score in the 60’s during the four round NCAA Championship. Woad’s score of 69 was the lowest round of the day among the golfers who advanced to the final round of stroke play.

“It’s been a great season for me,” said Woad shortly after finishing play in her second career NCAA Championship. “It’s definitely been consistent; I’ve contended in most events which is great because it gives me lots of experience trying to win tournaments.”

Heath (75 in the final round) Alice Hodge (73 in the final round) completed their Florida State careers as two of the most successful players in school history. Both are among the top 15 players for stroke average in school history and led the Seminoles to four consecutive top-11 national championship finishes.

Tennis No. 3 Cornut-Chauvinc strolls to round of 32

FSU sports information:

Florida State’s Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc rolled in straight sets over Mississippi State’s Nemanja Malesevic 6-3, 6-2 during Monday’s first round of the NCAA Singles Championship.

“Antoine earned a really good win today and did a great job of executing the game plan,” FSU coach Dwayne Hultquist said. “Winning a bunch of points early in the match really set the tone and I love the fact that he got up quick in both sets and finished strong.”

Cornut-Chauvinc, the tournament’s No. 3 seed, opened the match with four straight games to take an early lead before riding out the remainder of the set to win 6-3. He broke his opponent’s service game three different times in the set.

The senior won four of the opening five games in the second set to put the match out of reach and finished with a fifth service break to move past the first day of the championships. Cornut-Chauvinc earned his 13th top-50 win of the season.

Cornut-Chauvinc advances to the round of 32 and will face No. 26 Karlis Ozolins of Illinois on Tuesday and also begins his doubles championship run with Joshua Dous-Karpenschif. The pair will take on sixth-ranked Johannus Monday and Angel Diaz of Tennessee following singles action Tuesday.
