Softball FSU softball takes 7-3 victory in game 2 vs. Notre Dame

FSU sports information:

Eight hits and seven runs in the second inning helped the No. 18 Florida State softball team (30-10, 11-3) to a series-clinching 7-3 win over Notre Dame (23-16, 7-10) on a beautiful Saturday night at JoAnne Graf Field.

After a scoreless first inning, the Fighting Irish posed the first threat of the game as they were able to get runners on second and third with one out. Makenna Reid picked up a strikeout and forced a ground out to Amaya Ross to end the inning to keep NotreDame off the board.

FSU used that momentum from the top half of the inning to rattle off eight hits and seven runs with 12 batters coming to the plate. Isa Torres got things started with an infield single, and Amaya Ross doubled to put runners on second and third for Kennedy Harp. The freshman delivered with a single to bring home both Ross and Torres to put the Noleson the board. Madi Frey recorded just her second hit and RBI of her career to score Harp to put the Nolesup 3-0. Kaley Mudge singled to move Frey over, andJaysoni Beachum and Kalei Harding hit back-to-back singles to add two more runs for the Noles. Torres stepped in for her second at bat of the inning and singled to left field to score Beachum. Ross added one final run on an RBI ground out. In total, seven out FSU's eight hits in the inning were singles with six different players picking up an RBI.

Notre Dame responded with two runs in the third inning and threatened again in the fifth inning as they loaded the bases, but Reid got out of the jam and allowed the Fighting Irish to score just one run.

Notre Dame made one last push in the top of the seventh getting two runners on with one out, but Ashtyn Danley got a ground ball for Torres who flipped it over to Flaherty to start a 6-4-3 double play to end the game. Reid picked up the win to improve to 12-1 this season and 25-1 for her career.

Mudge had another stellar evening going 3-for-3 to improve to 5-for-6 on the weekend to lead an offensive group that saw nine different players record a hit.

The series finale will be at 4 p.m. tomorrow on the ACC Network.

Football FSU's coaches see rapid development in Marvin Jones Jr. in spring

The broad concept that transfers plug-and-play into a new college football team overlooks the essential day-to-day learning, strength and conditioning and on-field work in spring practice ahead of the fall.

In a storyline that has repeated itself across the team, a transfer’s first steps may show their advanced knowledge of playing the sport at the college level while lacking the feel of a new team’s scheme within the speed of a practice. Marvin Jones Jr. is one such example — his first practices didn’t leave a negative impression, but coaches can now see the rapid development and the defensive end feels more comfortable in what Florida State’s coaches are teaching.

“Marvin has gotten better really with every practice that we’ve had,” defensive ends coach John Papuchis said. “He’s got some natural ability to him. He’s starting to feel comfortable within the defense. And he’s starting to play fast and be productive and make plays.”

Baseball Marching Chiefs create unique Howser atmosphere for FSU baseball's rivalry week

The Marching Chiefs helped create one of the more raucous atmosphere in FSU baseball history for Tuesday's rivalry blowout of Florida. They'll be back in Howser tonight for Game 2 of the FSU-Miami series in what may be becoming a rare and special tradition.
"I think that's the best atmosphere I've ever seen in a game that I've coached or played at this level. It was just awesome."

Soccer Ashlyn Puerta reclassifies, will join FSU early

FSU sports information:

Coach Brian Pensky announced the signing of Ashlyn Puerta out of San Diego, Calif., on Thursday afternoon.

Puerta will reclassify and graduate high school a year early and will be with the Seminoles this upcoming season. Puerta is one of the more decorated young athletes of the game and has already had a plethora of experience in both the U.S and in Europe. Puerta was considered to be the No. 19 player in the TopDrawerSoccer 2025 recruiting rankings, prior to reclassifying.

After spending the spring and summer of 2023 training with NJ/NY Gotham FC and various teams in Spain and Portugal, Puerta has spent the 23/24 academic year playing with Albion SD MLS Next Boys Team.

Puerta was a member of the U15 U.S Women's Youth National Team that was CONCACAF Champions in 2022. In five games, Puerta tallied five goals in three assists to help the U.S. win the tournament. Puerta earned camp invites for the U16 USWYNT last year and the U17 USWYNT this year.

In 2022, Puerta was the U16 National MVP for the Girls Academy League and also won the National Championship with Albion 06 Girls Academy.

Baseball Live Updates: FSU vs. Miami (Game 2)

After a close win Thursday night, the 10th-ranked Florida State baseball team (28-5, 8-5 in ACC) continues its rivalry series with Miami (16-17, 6-10) Friday at 6 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.

With FSU down two weekend starters this week, the Seminoles will give freshman left-handed pitcher Brady Louck (0-0, 1.54 ERA) his first career weekend start vs. the Hurricanes. This will be Louck's first appearance in an ACC game but he has twice pitched in midweek games against Florida, allowing two earned runs over 2.1 innings with six strikeouts. It's unclear exactly how stretched out Louck is pitch-count wise entering his first weekend start. His career-long outing entering Friday is 3.2 innings vs. Jacksonville on April 2nd.

Miami will counter with LHP Rafe Schlesinger (2-2, 4.34 ERA), who has allowed 22 earned runs over 45.2 innings this season.

Softball FSU softball uses big inning to defeat Notre Dame

FSU sports information:

The No. 18 Florida State softball team (29-10, 10-3) took down the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (23-15, 7-9), 6-2, in front of 1,812 fans in the first game of their weekend series on JoAnne Graf Field in the Seminole Softball Complex. Friday's attendance was the sixth-largest crowd in program history and the fifth-largest crowd in a regular season game.

Notre Dame opened up the scoring on the night scoring a pair of early runs in the top of the first . The Seminoles responded at the bottom of the first inning when Kaley Mudge launched a triple to center field. Jaysoni Beachum followed up by hitting a RBI single allowing Mudge to score to cut the lead to one.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Seminoles took the lead and momentum of the game scoring five runs. It started with a Devin Flaherty double to left field immediately followed by a Mudge RBI to tie the game at two. Soon after, Beachum and Autumn Belviy (in to run for Mudge) had made it to first and third, respectively, before Kalei Harding came in and soared a ball over center of the wall for a three-run home run to give the Noles a 5-2 lead. The scoring did not stop there as Kennedy Harp hit a single RBI allowing Jahni Kerr to score and push the score to 6-2.

Ashtyn Danely threw most of the game for the Noles pitching a career high 6.1 innings while striking out . Emma Wilson finished out the game in the last inning for the Noles.

Florida State will face Notre Dame again on Saturday with the first pitch set for 6 p.m. on the ACC Network.

Migrants?

Please don’t make this political, it is not meant to be

Just need a point of clarification

It seems that the title “ migrant”, is used to describe folks who come across the southern border, especially brown or Latino people

When I was growing up Ft. Lauderdale and surrounding areas were bean fields, tomato fields and other various row crops

Migrant workers came from the West Indies, Jamaica, Mexico etc, to pick or harvest the crops

They would obtain work permits and travel the seasonal harvests around the country

My question is why do they now call non pickers migrants ?

I have a ton of respect form farm workers especially after seeing the movie “ McFarland “, and seeing inside what “pickers” go thru

Terrific eye opening movie!

I just watched another migrant movie about a farm worker becoming an astronaut, great movie!

So isn’t it demeaning to the actual hard working migrant farm worker to just automatically call every non farm worker who is brown, and crosses the border a migrant?

I think so, those actual farm workers work their asses off so I can have produce to eat! They provide an invaluable service and should be recognized for it!

  • Torres also hit a two-RBI walk-off single against Texas Tech on Feb. 9 to win the game for the Noles.
Wait, They're only Freshmen?!?!?!

  • Yes, some of Florida State's best production has come from a freshmen class that was ranked the No. 3 overall class by softball America.
  • Jaysoni Beachum (.447) and Isa Torres (,379) hold two out of the top three batting averages on the team.
  • In the circle, Ashtyn Danley has recorded a team-high 14 starts and her 74.1 innings are the second most on the team.

  • Reid was one of just five players to post a sub 1.00 ERA last season.
  • Reid was the first Seminole since Sarah Hamilton in 2009 to finish with a sub 1.00 ERA.
