Golf Luke Clanton becomes first FSU golfer to win three straight tournaments

Sophomore Luke Clanton completed the unthinkable on Tuesday evening.

Arguably the nation’s hottest collegiate golfer right now, Clanton earned his third straight collegiate tournament win after finishing 15-under (68-66-64) at the Lewis Chitengwa Memorial held at Birdwood Golf Course in Charlottesville, Va.

Beginning with his victory at the Seminole Intercollegiate on March 12, and continuing with his impressive win at the Valspar Collegiate Invitational on March 26, Clanton continued his winning ways this week. A final-round 64 cemented him as the only Seminole golfer to win three consecutive tournaments played.

Despite starting his final round with a bogey on his first hole, it proved to not be indicative of the type of performance he had in store. The Hialeah, Fla., native decimated the course with eight birdies in his final round, including consecutive birdies on holes 2-3 and 10-11.

The energetic performer earned ACC Golfer of the Month honors for March and has been on an extraordinary pace over the last month: Over his last nine rounds played since winning the Seminole Intercollegiate, Clanton has shot seven of those rounds in the 60s.

Clanton held off Tennessee’s Bryce Lewis, who finished at 10-under.

Florida State finished second in the tournament at 15-under (280-282-275).

Gray Albright and Brett Roberts each finished in the Top 25 of the leaderboard, tying for 22nd at 2-over.

The Seminoles begin postseason play at the ACC Championship held at Charlotte Country Club from April 19-22.

Football FSU spring practice 9 report: Ja'Khi Douglas flashes to kick off Week 4

FSU returned to practice Tuesday to kick off Week 4 of spring camp. Ja'Khi Douglas reminded us of his remarkable athleticism, DJ Uiagalelei had quite a few "WOW" throws, Earl Little Jr. and Azareye'h Thomas keep making plays and much more in today's practice report.

Baseball FSU heads into rivalry week vs. Florida, Miami on a roll

The FSU baseball team kicks off rivalry week at Howser Tuesday at 7 p.m. vs. Florida (ESPN2). After winning just three of the last 20 games vs. UF entering this season, the Seminoles are going for their first regular-season sweep of the Gators since 2002.

I also examined James Tibbs III and Jamie Arnold's strong cases to win ACC Player and Pitcher of the Year, respectively.

A few quotes from FSU's coordinators, who spoke at the Tallahassee Seminole Club tour stop on Monday night:

Football Recruiting Weekend Roundup-Rivals Camp Miami

Rivals held their annual Florida Camp at Saint Thomas Aquinas. The event had some of the very best prospects from across the state of Florida. The first session of the camp was the OL/DL portion of the event. Prospects like Max Buchanan and Ziyare Addison stole the show. Both had excellent performances and we expect them to see significant jumps in their rankings. We will break down the list of prospects that stood out and who FSU will target.

OL/DL

OT
Ziyare Addison (Sumer HS, 6-4, 280): Addison displayed pretty good feet. He is a big, athletic lineman. He is built like an athlete. You look at his lower body and it is like a track athlete. High hips. He has long legs and his ankles are small. Addison can move for a big man. He was able to handle both speed and bull-rush moves at the event. He won most of his battles and won an MVP trophy for his performance. FSU is recruiting Addison hard and the Noles look to be one of the teams to beat.

G/C Max Buchanan (Seminole HS, 6-4, 275): Buchanan was the top performer at the event. Not sure if he lost even one rep. He went against the very best the camp had to offer and shut everyone down. He had the best technique. You watched his hand placement and Buchanan had no problems. He plays with balance and leverage. He did not lunge or lean over to try and block any of the defenders that he faced. He put on a clinic of how you need to block someone. Buchanan is a heavy lean to FSU at this point. The word silent commit to FSU was being thrown around. Until a prospect is committed they are uncommitted in my opinion. FSU sits in a good spot for Buchanan.

DT Jarquez Carter (Newberry HS, 6-2, 270): Carter is a solid defensive tackle prospect. He is not big like Floyd Boucard, who I feel is the best DT in this year’s class. Carter did win an MVP award for DL at the camp. He displayed some quickness off the ball. He has a good base. He is not one that is easily moved off his spot. He can give you some pass-rush moves. Carter is a guy that is a developmental prospect at the next level. He has visited FSU multiple times and they lead for his services.

DE/OLB Demetrius Geathers Jr. (West Boca) (Class of 2026): This is a name to remember. Geathers is related to Jason Geathers, who played at Spanish River. For those who have followed recruiting for a long time should remember Jason. He was an elite prospect who signed with Miami. Demetrius has all the physical tools you want in a defensive end. He has size, speed, quickness and his body will allow him to continue to develop at the next level. He performed well. Some players look good in shorts — Geathers is one of them. That being said turn on his tape and Geathers performs with the pads on as well. He holds offers from Pitt, USF and FAU at this time.

DT Floyd Boucard (Miami Central, 6-4, 290: Boucard did not have the same type of performance like the UA camp but he stands out. He is strong as an ox. He has a very powerful base. He has decent technique. He has the tools to be a very good player at the next level. His body type is ideal for a defensive lineman. Once this kid gets some coaching at the college level, watch out. I still feel he is the one of if not the best DT prospects in Florida this year. FSU has offered but Miami stands out for Boucard. Louisville is also a legit option.

Mandrell Desier (6-3, 235) and Darryll Desier (6-4, 225) of Miami Norland: I put both together because they are identical twins. They are big, powerful, twitchy-type athletes. They can run. They are explosive. Guys their size should not move like they do. Both are very raw but you see the potential. FSU has offered both and you can see why. These two are impressive-looking human beings.

DE Javion Hilson (Cocoa, 6-4, 225): Hilson is Dallas Turner all over again. You can see why Bama is still in hot pursuit. He is big and quick. Hilson had the best first step of any defensive end at the camp. He has the body type you want to see in a prospect coming out of high school. Hilson can eventually play on Sundays if he gets it all together. He is committed to FSU. He still seems to be very high on the Noles. This one won't end until National Signing Day.

DE Jake Kreul (Orlando Bishop Moore, 6-2, 220): I was a bit disappointed in his performance. He may have won a golden ball award. That being said, Jake has not grown. He is a bit of a tweener. He needs to get much bigger and stronger. I think he is a good prospect but one that may get a little overhyped. He is a good kid who works hard. I was not blown away with him at the event. FSU has offered Jake. It will be interesting to see if he can play in space as Jake may have to move to linebacker.

DT Donta Simpson (Hollywood Chaminade, 6-3, 280): Simpson is someone I can see blowing up this spring. Defensive tackles are tough to find and he is a good one. He is big, strong and powerful. You will see him move guys. He has a decent first step off the ball. He is strong. Simpson is a prospect that is only going to get better. Keep an eye on Simpson. He has some P4 offers. Does not hold one yet from FSU.

LINEBACKERS, LINEBACKERS, LINEBACKERS

Kayron Maycock (Miami Central, 6-0, 180): I will be very surprised that after this event he measured in at 6-0 and 180 pounds. I would say he was an inch or two taller and 20 pounds heavier. He is also listed as a safety and was with the linebackers. Maycock is an athlete. He is the new breed of linebackers you are looking for. He has size, length and can cover. He is a defensive back who should be playing linebacker in college. You watch him perform and the kid looks and plays the part of a top-end linebacker prospect. He was my top backer at the event.

Izayia Williams (Leesburg, 6-1, 205) : Another physically impressive looking prospect (he's in the 2026 class). I came away wondering who this kid is. He performed well. You want to see these guys move around. How they transition on the field. Do they have fluidity? This kid checks a ton of boxes.

Jordan Campbell (Carol City, 6-2, 200): Campbell is a big, long, athletic linebacker. He is smooth. I look for different things at these events since they are not in pads. When you have size and can run those are two traits that are hard to overlook. He has the body type that suggest a move to defensive end is a possibility. He is listed at 200 pounds but he seems bigger. He has wide shoulders. He has the body type to get bigger and stronger. Campbell is committed to Miami but his recruitment is still open.

Andre Farrow (Miami Norland, 6-0, 200): Farrow looks like a grown man. He is big and has an intimidating look to him. He is another pretty good athlete. I don't think he was in the top three mentioned above but Farrow was in the second tier of linebackers at the camp. He is someone that I would keep an eye on.

Adam Balogoun-Ali (The Benjamin School, 6-2, 200): The class of 2026 is very well represented at linebacker. Adam won a golden ball for his performance at the event. He also showed some of those quality traits. Size, speed, quickness, change of direction. He was smooth. He did things pretty effortlessly. He is someone that is only going to get better. We expect him to be one of the top backers in Florida next cycle. Holds some P4 offers and some G5 offers.

Defensive Backs

Gregory Thomas (Plantation American Heritage) was at the event. He has been a heavy lean to FSU for a while now but was sporting a Clemson jacket. From what we are hearing FSU still sits in a good spot for Thomas. One thing that stands out is his size. He is a legit 6-2 if not 6-3.

Running Backs

Derrek Cooper (Hollywood Chaminade, 6-1, 200): I am going to go on record and say Cooper ends up one of the top backs in the nation. He is special. He has elite traits. He has the size, speed and has very good hands. He is so smooth. The game comes easily to him. Cooper can cut on a dime. He is going to be tough to tackle. Cooper is a 5-star talent. He is not ranked right now but I doubt there are many backs better than him.

Javian Mallory (West Boca, 5-11, 200): Every time I watch him run, he reminds me of Alex Collins. For those who don't know who Alex Collins is, he was a running back prospect FSU recruited the same year that Matthew Thomas came out. He was supposed to choose from Miami and FSU and went to Arkansas. He had a good career at Arkansas and ended up in the NFL. They have the same body types. They run the same way. Mallory is just a very good football player. He is also a great kid. He holds offers from the SEC.

Wide Receivers

Vernell Brown (Orlando Jones, 5-11, 180): Probably get hammered for keep saying this but I feel Brown's best position is at corner or safety. I have seen too many of these types of receivers in Florida. He gets overhyped and they end up not performing at the same level. Brandon Inniss was a much better receiver coming out of high school and you would swear by the experts that this kid is at the same level. He can be a good receiver in college. I feel he can be an elite defensive back.

Antwaun Parham (Cocount Creek Monarch, 6-4, 200): Physically very impressive. He was one of the biggest receivers at the camp. He also had very good hands. He had two elite traits — size and hands. He did not run the 40 great but with his size and body type you may be looking at a tight end down the road. He caught the ball with ease. It will be interesting to see him develop over the next year. Best offer is from Tulane. Played in Georgia last year and has since moved to Florida.

Baseball James Tibbs III spurs FSU lineup's late explosion in rubber-match win at BC

James Tibbs III came up big late with a pair of doubles and five RBI, leading a late offensive explosion for the Seminoles in a 9-2 win at Boston College Sunday afternoon to take the weekend series.

FSU is 26-5 and has already won more ACC series than all of last year.

Football Brothers Ja'Khi Douglas, Jaylin Lucas reunited, showing off speed at FSU

Ja'Khi Douglas says his brother, Jaylin Lucas, has gotten quite a bit faster since the last time they played together in high school.

Now reunited at FSU, the pair is bringing versatility and some serious speed (Lucas set an FSU speed record last week) to FSU's offense this spring.

Football Recruiting Bakers Dozen: April

With the recent commits of Duke Johnson (Alabama) and Tarvos Alford (Ohio State), FSU's linebacker board needs to expand. Johnson was a heavy lean to the Seminoles until his visit to Alabama. Alford took a courtesy visit to FSU but decided to go to Ohio State. Where will FSU turn now? We will go over some of the players FSU will go after in this Bakers Dozen list. There are still plenty of linebackers on board but the Seminoles can't miss on this position in 2025.

1. OT Ziyare Addison (Sumner HS - Riverview, Fla.) 6-5, 270: Addison is one of the top offensive lineman in Florida if not the Southeast. He is a big-time prospect and right now the Noles lead. You just have to follow the visits and with Addison he continues to show up on campus. Addison has the athletic ability to play tackle and the strength to play inside at guard. He is one of the more versatile lineman in this year’s class. He is a must get for the Seminoles. They are one of the leaders for his services.

2. DT Myron Charles (Port Charlotte HS - Port Charlotte, Fla.) 6-4, 290: If Addison is priority No. 1 on the board, Charles is No. 2. He is another prospect that has been on FSU's campus multiple times. He is also a major priority. He has said and done all the right things. We feel it is only a matter of time before the Port Charlotte star commits to the Seminoles.

3. TE Elyiss Williams (Camden County-Kingsland, Ga.) 6-7, 235 (Committed to UGA): While committed to Georgia, Williams has shown up on FSU campus multiple times. He is a priority for FSU. Physically there are not many better-looking prospects in the country. He should be rated a five-star as Williams is most likely the top tight end in the country. Georgia will be hard to beat but Williams is giving FSU a legit shot to land him.

4. WR Dallas Wilson (Tampa Bay Tech, Tampa, Fla.) 6-3, 200 (Committed to Oregon): Wilson is one of the top receivers on FSU's board or is close to the top of the list. He is so smooth. He moves effortlessly when running routes. He catches the ball with ease. He is a complete player. You could argue he is the top rated receiver in Florida and one of the best in the country. This will be a tough get for FSU but they will give everything they can to land him.

5. WR Vernell Brown (Orlando Jones, FL) 5-11, 170: Brown is a major priority for this staff. One thing is when Mike Norvell and his staff zero in on a player they have a legit shot at landing him. Brown has Ohio State as his leader. FSU is going to fight hard to land him. He is a playmaker and one of the best athletes in Florida this year.

6. RB Byron Louis (Plantation American Heritage) 5-11, 200: Louis just took a recent visit to FSU. He is the top-rated back that FSU is recruiting at this time. The Seminoles have put themselves into this race. He gives you the total package at running back. Louis has both size and speed. Get him some daylight and Louis is off to the races.

7. DL Jalen Wiggins: (Rickards HS-Tallahassee, FL) 6-4, 250 (Committed to UF): Wiggins is committed to UF. That has not stopped FSU from recruiting Wiggins. They need to upgrade the defensive line and Wiggins adds another solid piece to that puzzle. He has the ability to play defensive end or move inside to tackle on pass-rush downs. He is a good athlete. He has the ability to stop the run. He can help set the edge on run plays.

8. LB Tavion Wallace (Wayne County-Jesup, Ga.) 6-1, 210: With the commitments of Johnson and Alford, Wallace becomes a major priority. He should probably be higher on this list. FSU needs linebackers and Wallace has the Noles on top. Johnson also had FSU leading but that went south quickly.

9. LB Zaydrius Rainey-Sale (Spanaway, Wash., Bethel HS) 6-2, 220: Sale came on a visit last summer. FSU was in good standing for him. Sale is another top-rated linebacker. He was committed to Alabama but that changed once Saban left. FSU has kept in contact with him. His recruitment comes down to him visiting FSU again. If they can get another unofficial visit followed up with an official visit, FSU should stand a chance.

10. G/C Max Buchanan (Sanford Seminole) 6-4, 275: Max will be part of a very good offensive line class for FSU. With Thomas already in the fold and FSU leading for Addison and Buchanan this OL class is off to a great start. Buchanan really likes FSU and they like him. He plays some tackle but we project him as a center in college.

11. WR Joshua Moore (Pembroke Pines West Broward HS) 6-4, 200: Keep an eye on Moore. He provides you a receiver with size. He is one of the bigger receivers on the board. He has massive hands. He can catch the ball away from his body. You will see that he runs solid routes. Moore is a receiver whose stock continues to rise. We feel FSU may make Moore a priority.

12. DB Gregory Thomas (Plantation American Heritage) 6-1, 180: Thomas has FSU as his leader. Now he probably just needs the ok from FSU's staff to pull the trigger. He has been on campus many times. He also is a position of need - safety. FSU is on commit watch for Thomas.

13 ATH Dallas Golden (Tampa Berkeley Prep) 6-0, 180: Golden took a recent visit to FSU. He is being recruited as a corner. He seemed lukewarm on his visit. Sometimes prospects don't want to show their hands. Notre Dame is going to be the main school FSU has to beat out for his services. He can play running back, receiver or defensive back in college.

Golf PGSF FedEx Cup Week 14: The Valero Texas Open (sign-up still open)

2083880824.jpg

It’s the final week before the season’s first major, with four of the world’s top-10 players heading to TPC San Antonio for the Valero Texas Open.
The Aon Swing 5 for the RBC Heritage will also be finalized this week. With less than 10 FedExCup points separating Nos. 5 to 7 in the Aon Swing 5 standings heading into this week, it’s set to be a dramatic finish at TPC San Antonio.
The winner – if not already qualified – also earns the final invite to the Masters, something that’s happened in two of the last four Valero Texas Opens.
Here’s everything else you need to know as the TOUR’s Texas two-step continues in San Antonio.
FIELD NOTES: Rory McIlroy returns to make his third start of this event’s TPC San Antonio era; he finished runner-up in 2013 and missed the cut in 2022. Since McIlroy’s last Valero start, he has won six times worldwide … Corey Conners will look to become the first back-to-back winner at the Valero Texas Open since Zach Johnson in 2008-09. He is also looking to join Justin Leonard and Arnold Palmer as the event’s only three-time winners … Jordan Spieth, the 2021 winner, returns to action. He looks to right the ship leading into the Masters after missing his last two cuts on TOUR … Collin Morikawa is making his tournament debut. It’s been an up-and-down 2024 campaign for Morikawa so far, with just one top-10 finish in six starts … Max Homa is set to tee it up in San Antonio for the first time since 2019 … Ludvig Åberg will play the Valero Texas Open for the first time as a pro after missing the cut in 2022. Åberg has gone 7-for-7 in cuts made this season and has three top-10s, including an eighth-place finish at THE PLAYERS Championship, his last TOUR start. Åberg is set to make his major championship debut next week at the Masters … Reigning Open champion Brian Harman returns to TPC San Antonio for the first time since 2019. His best finish to date is a T16 in 2014 … Upwards of 25 players in the field are also headed to the Masters. This marks the final opportunity for Masters qualification; if the winner this week is not already in the field, they’ll punch the final ticket to Augusta National.

Sullivan, who is from England, spent his first three collegiate seasons at Jacksonville University. He led the team in scoring average in 2022-23 … Ryan Palmer has played every Valero Texas Open hosted by TPC San Antonio and is back in action this week. He notched three straight top-six finishes from 2015-17 at this event … Padraig Harrington will play his second straight PGA TOUR event after winning the Hoag Classic Newport Beach on PGA TOUR Champions two weeks ago. It was his first top-10 on TOUR since the 2021 PGA Championship when he finished T4 … Other sponsor invites were awarded to 2017 winner Kevin Chappell, 2015 winner Jimmy Walker and European Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald.
SIGNATURE EVENT STORYLINES: Stephan Jaeger’s
win at the Texas Children’s Houston Open saw him move to No. 3 in the Aon Next 10 standings; however, he’ll be exempt for the remaining Signature Events in 2024 regardless of his position in the Aon Next 10 by virtue of his victory at Memorial Park … Thomas Detry, after finishing T2 in Houston, jumped inside the Aon Next 10 standings from No. 13 to No. 9 … The next Signature Event on the PGA TOUR schedule is the RBC Heritage. The Aon Swing 5 standings for that event started with the Puerto Rico Open and have continued through the Valspar Championship and Texas Children’s Houston Open; this week’s Valero Texas Open marks the final event to try to qualify … Alejandro Tosti (T2 in Houston) and Billy Horschel (T7 in Houston) both moved inside the Aon Swing 5 and are both teeing it up this week at TPC San Antonio … The Aon Next 10 for the RBC Heritage will be finalized after the Masters.
COMCAST BUSINESS TOUR TOP 10 UPDATES: With his win at the Texas Children’s Houston Open, Stephan Jaeger jumped to No. 10 in the standings, a move up 37 spots … Scottie Scheffler kept a stranglehold on the No. 1 spot of the FedExCup standings after his tie for second in Houston … Nick Taylor was bumped by Jaeger from No. 10 to No. 11 … The rest of the TOUR TOP 10 remained unchanged with Byeong Hun An and Chris Kirk remaining as the only players to be inside the TOUR TOP 10 for every week so far this season.
FEDEXCUP: Winner receives 500 FedExCup points.
COURSE: TPC San Antonio (Oaks Course), 7,438 yards, par 72. Opened in January 2010, the layout features just 100 feet of elevation and boasts a traditional design that balances wider fairways with narrower tree-lined fairways for strategic options to the greens. The downhill holes often play into the prevailing wind while uphill holes play downwind. This is the 15th time the design will play host to the Valero Texas Open.
72-HOLE RECORD:
  • 254: Tommy Armour III (2003 at La Cantera)
  • TPC San Antonio record: 268, Corey Conners (2019)
18-HOLE RECORD:
  • 60: Bart Bryant (Round 3, 2004 at La Cantera), Zach Johnson (Round 3, 2009 at La Cantera)
  • TPC San Antonio record: 62, Trey Mullinax (Round 3, 2018)
LAST TIME: Corey Conners won the Valero Texas Open for the second time in his career, closing with a 4-under 68. Conners was a shot back of Patrick Rodgers through 54 holes, but the Canadian built up a three-shot advantage through 15 holes Sunday. Rookie Sam Stevens eagled the par-5 17th but missed a 9-foot birdie try on the 72nd hole that would have tied it. Conners, who had the first-round lead after a 64, tapped in for par on 18 to win by one. Sam Ryder and Matt Kuchar finished a shot back of Stevens, at 13 under, and tied for third. Rodgers shot a 1-over 73 in the final round and ended up fifth.

Good luck to everyone this week

Dorsey better suited to be a starter?

Even when he has pitched well in relief, he usually has a (sometimes very) rocky start. He did today, too (well, briefly). Then he buckled down and was unhittable. That’s the kind of thing I’ve seen over the years from dangerous opposing starters. You better get your runs in the first couple of innings, cause that’s all you’re gonna get. Maybe we’ve found have another starter?

Football FSU support staff salary notes (Sims, Stockstill)

FSU has brought on Ernie Sims and Rick Stockstill in 2024. Sims' title is defensive analyst, while Stockstill is director of scouting for offense.

Both have been brought on board by Mike Norvell and FSU at a relative bargain and their salaries are of course offset by Sims' pension and Stockstill's buyout.

Sims is a volunteer coach at FSU. He was UCF's linebackers coach in 2023. UCF didn't fulfill our request for his contract, and it's plausible he has a buyout. Sims also has an NFL pension (he played from 2006-13).

Stockstill will earn $135,000 annually at FSU. He previously coached at Middle Tennessee for 18 seasons. Middle Tennessee didn't fulfill our request for a contract but USA Today's head coaching salary database had Stockstill earning a $4.98 million buyout as of Dec. 1, 2023.
