Baseball Notes, updates: Miami at FSU (Thursday, 7 p.m. on ACC Network)

FSU opens its three-game series with Miami on Thursday at 7 p.m. (ACC Network) at Dick Howser Stadium. Mike Ferrin and Gaby Sanchez will be on the call tonight.

After a rough night/early morning with the weather, we are good to go here for the first game of the series.

LHP Jamie Arnold (6-1, 0.94 ERA) will take the mound for the Seminoles.

RHP Gage Ziehl (2-2, 4.33 ERA) will be on the mound for Miami.

FSU won't have a pair of starting pitchers, Cam Leiter and Conner Whittaker for this weekend's series. Curt wrote about the starting pitching juggling for the Seminoles.

If you haven't give Curt's video/podcast with Baseball America's Teddy Cahill a listen. They cover a lot of ground on FSU and the ACC.

We will have more updates in the thread below.

Football FSU spring practice 10 report: Running backs steal the show again Thursday

For the second straight practice this week, FSU's running backs stole the show.

Roydell Williams, Kam Davis and the deep passing game all stood out and the defense finished strong after a slow start in the 10th practice of spring.

Football Davonte Brown bringing cornerback skills, experience to FSU safety unit

Davonte Brown has played a lot of college football as a cornerback, but he's learning a new position, safety, after transferring into FSU in January. He brings that experience to a FSU safety unit that doesn't have much of it beyond Shyheim Brown.

Football Five FSU football players recognized by NFF Hampshire Honor Society

FSU sports information:

A program-record five members of the 2023 ACC champions Florida State football team have been recognized as members of the 2024 National Football Foundation Hampshire Honor Society. All-ACC kicker Ryan Fitzgerald, tight end Preston Daniel and offensive linemen Casey Roddick, Robert Scott Jr., and Thomas Shrader made up this year’s group of honorees.

The prestigious honor is reserved for college football players who maintained a cumulative 3.2 grade-point average throughout their college careers while making valuable contributions on the field. Florida State’s five members are its most in a season since the program began in 2007, bettering last season’s total of four, and the most among schools in Florida. This year’s group ranks sixth among ACC schools and gives FSU multiple members of the Hampshire Honor Society for the third straight year, the longest streak in program history.

Fitzgerald, who earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting, was a Lou Groza Award semifinalist, third-team All-ACC and member of the All-ACC Academic Team last season after scoring a career-high 115 points. He was 19-of-21 on field goals and a perfect 58-of-58 on PAT attempts, leading the ACC in made PATs, total made kicks and total points scored. His field goal percentage of .904 ranked seventh in the country and was the third-best single-season rating in program history, and his PAT total, which was 14 more than the next-closest kicker in the conference, ranked 11th in the country. Fitzgerald’s made PATs total also was the second-highest by an FSU kicker without a miss and ranked fourth overall on the program’s single-season list, while his points total was the 10th-highest in a season in program history.

Daniel appeared in all 14 games in 2023, making contributions on both offense and as part of multiple special teams units. Daniel graduated with a perfect 4.00 GPA in finance and also earned All-ACC Academic Team recognition and was a semifinalist for the Campbell Trophy. He grabbed a four-yard touchdown catch in the 31-29 win at Boston College and also had a 14-yard kickoff return against the Eagles.

Roddick earned honorable mention All-ACC honors in his lone season at FSU after appearing in all 14 games with 13 starts at left guard. Scott appeared in seven games with one start, and Shrader saw action in 11 contests during the 2023 season. Roddick and Scott both graduated with social science degrees, and Shrader earned his bachelor’s degree in finance. The trio, who all earned All-ACC Academic Team honors, helped block for Jordan Travis, the ACC’s Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year, and helped FSU’s offense lead the conference in scoring offense, total touchdowns, rushing touchdowns, yards per completion, fewest interceptions thrown and fewest turnovers. Florida State, which also led the ACC in scoring offense in 2022, became the first ACC team since 2018-20 to produce the conference’s best scoring offense in back-to-back seasons.

FSU in top-3 for OT Carde Smith who announces commit today & RB Alvin Henderson who announces on Thursday, other recruiting notes.

A lot of people believe Smith will commit to Auburn but he did tell me yesterday that he plans on being at Florida State for the spring game. Now that conversation took place before he announced he was commiting on Tuesday, however I think he will end up back on-campus next week regardless of who commits to later today.

FSU had some momentum going with Henderson for a while but I think Auburn and Penn State are the schools it come down to with the talented running back's early commitment.

Then again its recruiting and as we all know in the NIL Era it ain't over until National Signing Day with the elite recruits. Like most national prospects both these guys will continued to be pursued heavily until December 4th.

Football Bryson Estes earning recognition for development at FSU this spring

With all of the established names and faces in the offensive line room, let alone a pair of transfers, it’s easy to forget about a veteran like Bryson Estes.

A redshirt junior, Estes’ career so far in FSU has been relatively quiet. Aside from some time on special teams, Estes has played sparingly on offense. But that could be changing based on a spring where Estes has earned praise from coach Mike Norvell and offensive coordinator / offensive line coach Alex Atkins.

“An older guy that I think has had a hell of a spring is Bryson Estes,” Norvell said after Tuesday's practice. “He’s playing the best football he’s played since he’s been here. I’m proud of him. He’s really worked hard. He’s playing faster.”

Baseball Another shuffle coming to FSU's weekend rotation for Miami series

FSU baseball will be without two of its starting pitchers for this weekend's home series vs. rival Miami. Cam Leiter is improving but will miss his second straight start and Conner Whittaker will not pitch after bouncing back poorly from his start at BC.

Sports Business Judge Cooper denies ACC's motion to stay, calls it 'forum shopping'

Leon County second circuit judge John Cooper denied the ACC’s motion to stay, delivering an opinion Tuesday afternoon that he feels the filing in North Carolina is a form of “forum shopping.”

Cooper heard legal arguments from legal teams representing FSU and the ACC beginning at 9:40 a.m. before making his comments and decision after 4 p.m.

“I'm not saying Florida State is right, I’m not saying Florida State has the better argument on the merits,” Cooper said. “I'm just saying the motion to stay should be denied.”
