NFL bans the hip-drop tackle

From the AP, a ban to the type of tackle that ended Jordan Travis' season:

The NFL is eliminating the hip-drop tackle.

NFL team owners on Monday unanimously approved a rule that bans players from using a swivel technique to tackle an opponent.

A violation will result in a 15-yard penalty and could ultimately result in fines for players.

NFL executive Jeff Miller said the hip-drop tackle was used 230 times last season and resulted in 15 players missing time with injuries.

The NFL Players Association has adamantly opposed the rule.

“It doesn’t get used very often, but when it is used, it’s incredibly injurious to the runner,” NFL Competition Committee chairman Rich McKay said. “The runner is purely defenseless. And I have heard defenders say it before, and I hear them, ‘Hey, you’re putting me in a really tough spot. You’re saying I can’t hit here. What do I do?’ And my response has always been, ‘Well, you can’t do that, and that’s just because the guy you’re hitting is defenseless and has no way to protect himself.’ So we’ve got to protect him and you’ve got to come up with other ways, and you know what, they do.”

Woad wins two matches, but FSU women's golf loses to Duke, South Carolina

FSU sports information:

All-American Lottie Woad gained two wins, but the Florida State Women’s Golf team fell to both Duke (2-3-0) and South Carolina (1-3-1) on the first day of the Old Barnwell Derby Match Play Championship at the Old Barnwell Golf Club. The Seminoles face Mississippi State on the final day of the competition as they close out their regular season and continue preparations for the upcoming ACC (April 18-21), NCAA Regional (May 6-8) and NCAA Championships (May 17-22).

Both the ACC and NCAA Championship Finals utilize a match play format to crown the league and NCAA Champions. The Seminoles have advanced to the match play single-elimination rounds at the ACC Championships in two out of the last three seasons, and at the NCAA Championships in both of the last two seasons.

The Seminoles are one of just three teams - Florida State, Stanford, and Texas A&M - who have advanced to match play in the NCAA Championship Finals in the last two seasons.

“We will be better in the long run because of the aspects of match play that we learned today,” said Head Coach Amy Bond. “We put our players in difficult pairings with the goal for them to become better at match play. We certainly achieved that goal. Hopefully in the next month we will clean up the things we need to and have the opportunities to play, and beat, any players in college golf.”

Woad gained a victory over Katie Li in the first match of the day against Duke’s Katie Li by a 3&2 margin. The victory by Woad against Li was significant because Li won the individual championship of the Florida State Match Up at the Seminole Legacy Golf Course with a three-stroke victory over Woad. The Seminoles’ All-American won three of the final six holes contested to gain the victory.

Woad’s match play skills were also on display in her victory over South Carolina’s Vairana Heck in the Seminoles’ afternoon match against the Gamecocks. After losing the first two holes of the match, Woad stormed back to tie the match with three holes remaining and won the decision as she claimed the final hole of the match.

Florida State’s sophomore All-American Mirabel Ting also gained a win for the Seminoles as she topped Duke’s Andie Smith by a 3&1 mark in the morning match.

Softball FSU finishes sweep of Pitt with 17-7 win

FSU sports information:

The Florida State Seminoles' offense came through again as they completed the series sweep with a 17-7 win over Pitt (8-21, 0-9) in five innings on Sunday evening.

Kaley Mudge got things started and continued her hot weekend with a leadoff home run to left center to give the Noles an early 1-0 lead. It was Mudge's first home run of the season.

Allison Royalty surrendered a walk in the bottom of the first inning but was able to get out of the inning without any further damage.

The Seminoles got the bats going again in the bottom of the second inning as Amaya Ross drew a leadoff walk, and Hallie Wacaser hit her sixth home run of the season. Isa Torres immediately followed Wacaser with a home run of her own to give the Noles a 4-0 lead. Mudge stepped in with two outs and delivered another solo home run for her first career multi-home run of her career.

Pitt responded with a two-run home run in the bottom of the second, but the Noles got right back to work in the top of the third. Michaela Edenfield was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. The Noles got two runners in scoring position thanks to a double from Amaya Ross. Jahni Kerr got a RBI on a groundout, and Hallie Wacaser delivered with a double to give the Noles a 7-2 lead. FSU added one more run in the inning as Wacaser scored thanks to a Panthers' error.

Pitt responded again in the bottom of the third as they smacked two home runs to bring them within two.

FSU continued their offensive explosion as Wacaser picked up her fourth and fifth RBI in the top of the fourth on a single to put the Noles back up 10-6.

Makenna Reid was able to keep the Panthers off the board in the bottom of the fourth, and the offense had their biggest inning of the weekend in the top of the fifth. After Harding drove home Flaherty on a sacrifice fly, Ross and Kerr hit back-to-back home runs to put the game away. Katie Dack joined the home run party with her first home run of the season to put the Noles up 17-7.

Pitt added one more in the bottom of the fifth, but Reid shut the door to give the Noles their third run-rule victory of the series.

The offense was the story of the weekend as the Noles scored 40 runs on 39 hits. FSU hit 15 home runs including seven in the series finale which ties a program record. This weekend marked the first time in school history that FSU scored 10 or more runs in each game of a three-game series against an ACC opponent. It was also just the fourth time in school history that FSU has had three or more consecutive games with 10 or more runs.

FSU will return to the Seminole Softball Complex for another ACC series against NC State next Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

John Calipari

I argued on another site about JC. He has to be the most overrated coach in the history of basketball. He will be known as the coach who had more talent come through his programs only to come up short time after time. At UMASS he had Marcus Camby. At Memphis he had Derrick Rose.

The talent he has had at UK has been staggering. In 2010 his team was John Wall (1st Overall Pick), DeMarcus Cousing (5th Overall Pick). In all he had five number one picks on 2010. Eric Bledsoe was a first round pick. His only title came with Anthony Davis.

His teams have had more 1st round picks than any other program. Brandon Knight, Michal Kidd Gilchrist, Julius Randle, Karl Anthony Towns, Williy Cauley Stein, Trey Lyles, Devin Booker, Jamal Murray, De'Aron Fox, Malik Monk and Bam Adebayo who were all on the same team. Shai Gigeous Alexander went to Kentucky. Tyler Herro and Tyrese Maxey. He has had guys who have been stars in the NBA. 35 1st Round picks. There has never been a coach who has underachieved more as a head coach. There were experts who felt this team could make a run...LOL. This team like so many others at UK never went all the way. One of the main reasons why....Like Hamilton at FSU, You have to have a natural at the PG spot. Cal should be fired and UK should be looking for a new coach next week.

Football Recruiting Stubbs, Terry, Gibson all commit to Southern Cal this weekend

S Drake Stubbs, DT Justus Terry and DE Isaish Gibson all committed to USC this weekend.

Stubbs commitment to the Trojans was the most surprising given that most people covering his recruitment thought this was a battle between FSU and Florida.

Terry had been committed to UGA for quite some time and had just been on an unofficial visit to FSU but was still going to be a challenge to flip for the Seminoles.

Gibson was also thought to be a long shot for FSU despite his being on-campus at least twice over the last 12 months.

It will be interesting to see if Florida State can flip Stubbs, the Jacksonville Mandarin product was near, if not at, the top of the Seminoles safety board for 2025.

Football Unexpected starts gave FSU QB Brock Glenn some valuable experience entering Year 2

Missing time due to injury and then being thrown into the deep end vs. two top-15 teams, FSU QB Brock Glenn's redshirt season wasn't typical. But it did teach him some valuable lessons about the intensity it takes to play at this level entering his second season as a Seminole.

Golf PGSF FedEx Cup Week 12: The Valspar Championship (sign-up still open)

first-look-valspar-snake-pit.jpg

Written by Adam Stanley@Adam_Stanley
The PGA TOUR’s Florida Swing reaches its conclusion at the Valspar Championship just outside Tampa, as players cross the state after THE PLAYERS Championship last week.
Several top PGA TOUR pros have made the short trip from TPC Sawgrass to Innisbrook Resort’s Copperhead Course, which features the famed “Snake Pit” trio of closing holes. Taylor Moore returns to defend his 2023 title, with past winners in the field including Jordan Spieth and Sam Burns.
Here’s everything you need to know before play begins at Innisbrook.
FIELD NOTES: Xander Schauffele, fresh off his T2 at THE PLAYERS, will return to action at the Valspar. Schauffele has five top-10 finishes in seven events so far this season. He last played Innisbrook in 2022 where he finished T12 … Brian Harman, who tied Schauffele and Wyndham Clark at 19-under at THE PLAYERS, one shot back of Scottie Scheffler’s winning total, makes the trip to Innisbrook as well. Harman is rounding into form, having gone T12-T2 in his last two starts. But his effort at Innisbrook has been curious over the last decade. He has missed the cut in five of his last six Valspar appearances, but his one made cut resulted in a T5 in 2022 … Sam Burns returns to Innisbrook – a place he’s had plenty of success – looking for another win. Burns went back-to-back at the Valspar in 2021 and 2022 and finished sixth a year ago. He has notched four top-12s in five starts at Innisbrook, and he has yet to miss a cut … Justin Thomas is hoping to turn things around after a missed cut at THE PLAYERS. Thomas finished 10th last year and was third the year prior. He’s missed just one cut at the Valspar in his career … Tony Finau returns to Innisbrook for the first time since 2018. While he’s missed the cut three out of four times at Innisbrook, he did finish fifth in 2017 … Taylor Moore returns to Tampa looking to go back-to-back at the Valspar. Moore has found the weekend in all seven of his PGA TOUR starts this season … 2015 Valspar winner Spieth also returns. Spieth has finished in the top 20 at Innisbrook in five of his six starts, including a T3 a year ago.

SIGNATURE EVENT STORYLINES: Fred Biondi will play for the fourth time this season on the PGA TOUR. He’s back in action after finishing T32 at the Puerto Rico Open. Biondi, the 2023 NCAA individual champion at the University of Florida, has made the cut in all four of his Korn Ferry Tour starts so far this season … Biondi’s University of Florida teammate Ricky Castillo will make his non-major debut on the PGA TOUR. Castillo, who debuted at the 2020 U.S. Open, turned pro last year and has made plenty of noise on the Korn Ferry Tour so far this season. The 23-year-old has made his last five cuts and finished no worse than T20, including two top-five showings … Nick Gabrelcik returns to action at the Valspar. The University of North Florida senior grew up just 20 minutes from Innisbrook and made the cut in 2023. He volunteered at the event as a standard bearer as a youngster. Gabrelick is a nine-time collegiate winner … Kevin Roy will return to action on the PGA TOUR. The upstate New York native lost his TOUR card after 2023 but has made all four cuts on the Korn Ferry Tour this season including a runner-up at the season opener … Rounding out the sponsor exemptions are TOUR veterans Luke Donald and Ryan Palmer.
COMCAST BUSINESS TOUR TOP 10 UPDATES: Shane Lowry
moved inside the Aon Next 10 (from No. 11 to No. 9) after his T19 at THE PLAYERS, highlighted by a final-round 66 … Lowry was the only player who made a move inside the Aon Next 10 at THE PLAYERS … The Aon Swing 5 standings remained unchanged. The next Signature Event on the PGA TOUR schedule is the RBC Heritage in mid-April. The Aon Swing 5 standings for that event starts with the Puerto Rico Open and continues this week at the Valspar Championship, followed by the Texas Children’s Houston Open and Valero Texas Open. With his win at the Puerto Rico Open, Brice Garnett stands No. 1 on the Aon Swing 5 race.
FEDEXCUP: The winner receives 500 FedExCup points.
COURSE: Innisbrook Resort (Copperhead), par 71, 7,340 yards
Located just north of Tampa, the tree-lined, Larry Packard design puts a premium on positioning off the tee. The course, which opened in the early 1970s, features a tough three-hole closing stretch known as the “Snake Pit” – two tough par 4s sandwiched between a bruising 200-yard par 3. Last year the rough height was increased to 3.75 inches from 3 inches in prior years – look for that to be a factor again on the golf course in 2024.
72-HOLE RECORD: 266, Vijay Singh (2004)
18-HOLE RECORD: 61, Matt NeSmith (Round 2, 2022), Padraig Harrington (Round 1, 2012)
LAST TIME: Taylor Moore won for the first time on the PGA TOUR after a Sunday 67 at the Valspar Championship, topping Adam Schenk by one. Moore finished strong, making two birdies in his final four holes. He was waiting for a playoff before Spieth stumbled into the house. Spieth made bogey on the par-4 16th but appeared to be right back in it after hitting his tee ball on the par-3 17th to just 6 feet. He missed that birdie try, however, and bogeyed the 72nd hole of the championship to finish two shots behind Moore’s winning total. Spieth finished tied for third alongside Tommy Fleetwood while Wyndham Clark finished fifth.

Miami says no plans to leave the ACC, perfectly happy

Per Canesport: This morning UM Director of Athletics Dan Radakovich spoke to local radio show 560 AM about Florida State and Clemson's lawsuits with the ACC, in an effort to extricate themselves from the Grant of Rights.

“I really didn’t see it (Clemson filing a suit to leave the ACC) coming at this point in time,” Radakovich said. “Almost every school in the ACC has gone to the home office and looked at the documents and just made sure they understood all the different things associated with the grant of rights, television contracts. I was a little surprised that Clemson did that at this point in time. But each of these circumstances are very, very local. Whether you have constituencies on campus making a little more noise that we don’t want to be in a circumstance where we are (at a) disadvantage. I guess Clemson looked at that, said this is an important time to lessen exit fees or (get rid of) the grant of rights. Same thing with Florida State."

Keep in mind, Radakovich was atheltic director at two ACC schools prior to taking the Miami post, incluing Clemson from 2012-21 an Georgia Tech from 2006 to 2012.

“Here at the University of Miami we are incredibly solid with the ACC. It’s a great conference, provides great structure, access to the college football playoff which is very, very important. We look at our circumstances here with a very orange and green set of glasses saying are we in a good spot, growing our football program? We’ve invested in it, brought Mario (Cristobal) here, he’s establishing an incredible foundation. What’s the opportunity for us here with things under our control to be able to move this thing forward? The ACC is still one of the Power Four conferences that are part of the college football playoff, a very active and vibrant member of that Power Four. We are very proud to be a part of that, a leading brand within in the ACC and will continue to be a part of it.”

Radakovich was also asked if he thinks the contract is locked tight where Clemson and FSU will not be able to leave the ACC without huge financial repercussions. He pointed to Texas and Oklahoma announcing they were leaving the Big 12 for the SEC with four years remaining on their deal with a Grant of Rights in place. In that situation you saw those two programs stay in the conference and then buy out of the final year.

“There was no way in those early years that they were able to get out of the Grant of Rights,” Radakovich said. “I’m sure they had great attorneys – they looked at it and decided there was no way to get out of it so they stayed within their league until it was time they could get out.

“I’m not sure Clemson or Florida State will be able to change that.”

Baseball Live updates: FSU at Clemson in game 3 (1 p.m. on ACCN Extra)

Florida State (19-2, 3-2 ACC) seeks to leave Clemson (21-2, 4-1 ACC) with a victory on Sunday at 1 p.m. (live stream on ACC Network Extra) following a stunning finish to game 2 on Saturday.

Right-hander Conner Whittaker (3-0, 3.75 ERA) will be on the mound for FSU. Whittaker excelled in a midweek role after an opening weekend rainout adjusted the schedule and also picked up the win last Sunday over Notre Dame.

He has gone 5.1, 6, 6 and 6.2 innings in his four starts and has ramped up from 77 to 84, 90 and 94 pitches in those starts. FSU will need a day like that from Whittaker.

Clemson will start right-hander Aidan Knaak (1-0, 3.42 ERA).

Curt has a recap of the FSU-Clemson doubleheader loss. And, yes, understandable if you're ready to move on to see if FSU can salvage game 3.

We'll have updates in the thread below

Softball FSU takes 10-0 win in five innings over Pitt (game 2)

FSU sports information:

The No. 18 Florida State Softball team (20-9, 3-2) picked up right where they left off from Saturday's game with another offensive outburst in a 10-0 win over Pitt (8-20, 0-8) in five innings on Sunday afternoon.

Kaley Mudge set the tone right away for the Noles as she hit a leadoff triple to put the Noles in business. Jaysoni Beachum would hit a fly ball deep enough for Mudge to score. Kalei Harding then stepped in to hit her sixth home run of the season. Michaela Edenfield was hit by a pitch then Amaya Ross hit her second home run in as many games to put the Noles up 4-0. Jahni Kerr followed Ross with her third home run of the season to put the Noles up 5-0 after the top of the first.

The Noles got back to work in the second inning as Devyn Flaherty and Mudge hit back-to-back singles, and Beachum was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Harding delivered with a RBI single, and Edenfield scored one more on a sacrifice fly to give the Noles a 7-0 lead after two innings.

In the third inning, Flaherty hit a two-out single, and freshman Kennedy Harp hit her second career home run to left center field to put the Noles up 9-0.

Edenfield hit her team-leading ninth home run of the season to open up the fourth inning to give the Noles 10 runs for the second consecutive game, and the eighth time this season.

Ashtyn Danley shut down the Pitt offense as she retired the first six batters she faced. Danley pitched four innings and allowed just one hit while striking out a career high eight batters. Emma Wilson came on in the fifth and closed the door by retiring the side in order.

The two teams will play the series finale today at 5 p.m. on the ACC Network.

Softball FSU softball routs Pitt in five innings

FSU sports information:

The No. 18 Florida State softball team (19-9, 2-2) scored 13 runs in the first three innings to cruise to a 13-4 victory in five innings over Pitt (8-19, 0-7) on a chilly afternoon at Vartabedian Field in Pittsburgh, Pa.

The Seminoles wasted no time getting the bats going as back-to-back singles from Kaley Mudge and Jaysoni Beachum put a runner in scoring position for Kalei Harding. Harding singled to bring home Mudge for the Seminoles first run of the game. After back-to-back pop-ups, Jahni Kerr smashed her second home run of the year to center field to give theNoles a 4-0 lead after the top of the first.

Pitt was able to put runners on the corners in the bottom of the first inning, but Makenna Reid got the Panthers swinging to end the inning.

Katie Dack led off the second inning with a walk, and after a Devyn Flaherty double, Beachum hit her seventh home run of the season to put the Noles up 7-0. After another single from Harding, Amaya Ross continued her terrific season with a two-run home run to make it 9-0.

The Seminoles continued the scoring barrage in the third inning as Mudge drew a bases loaded walk to put the Noles up 10-0. FSU has now scored 10 or more runs seven times this season after accomplishing that feat just eight times in 69 games last season.

Beachum and Harding each hit their third singles of the game to add two more runs for the Noles. Ross added one more run on a sacrifice fly to make the score 13-0.

The Panthers once again threatened in the bottom of the third as they loaded the bases with just one out. Reid came up clutch with back-to-back strikeouts to keep off the Panthers off the board.

Pitt was able to bring across four runs in the bottom of the fourth, but the Seminoles closed out the game in the fifth inning with three strikeouts. FSU had a season-high 10 strikeouts on the afternoon led by Reid with five. Mimi Gooden added four strikeouts, and Ashtyn Danley struck out the only batter she faced in the fifth.

Offensively, Beachum had her best game of the season as she earned a season high for hits (4) and RBI (4). Harding also went 3-for-3 on the afternoon.

The teams will wrap up the series tomorrow with a doubleheader. The first game will begin at 1 p.m. and will not be streamed. The finale is set for 5 p.m. on the ACC Network.

No. 5 FSU beach volleyball wraps up day 1 of CCSA Midseason Tournament 2-0

FSU sports information:

The No. 5 Florida State beach volleyball team opened the CCSA Midseason Tournament with two victories on Saturday in Tallahassee. The Seminoles extend their record to 17-2, their best start since 2021.

Florida State opened the tournament with a 5-0 victory over Jacksonville. The Noles put on a dominant performance, claiming every set on every court. Junior Anna Long sealed the match on court five with a giant block. Long and Alexis Durish have won every match they have played in so far and, including their victory against South Carolina, have posted a season record of 13-0. Freshmen Addy White and Kaileigh Truslow showcased their talents as well, winning courts one and five, respectively.

The Seminoles then played South Carolina in what was an exciting matchup. Audrey Koenig and Skyler Germann gave a gutsy effort on court one, winning in three highly competitive sets. Caitlin Moon and Kaileigh Truslow swept the Gamecocks on court five to complete their second victory of the day. Carra Sassack and Makenna Wolfe battled in a back-and-forth matchup on court four where the Gamecocks claimed their only point of the duel. Despite this, The Noles still won the duel with a final score of 4-1.

The CCSA Midseason Tournament will continue Sunday when Florida State will play No. 18 Grand Canyon at 10:15 a.m., followed by No. 8 LSU at 12:45 p.m. Live stats will be available on Seminoles.com.

Baseball Live Updates: No. 12 FSU at No. 4 Clemson (Saturday doubleheader)

We had to wait an extra day due to weather but the most anticipated Florida State baseball series in recent history is set to get underway Saturday afternoon.

The 12th-ranked Seminoles (19-0, 3-0 in ACC) put their undefeated record on the line in their toughest test of the season so far, a weekend series at No. 4 Clemson (19-2, 2-1). Friday's game was delayed due to weather and the teams will now play a doubleheader Saturday starting at 1 p.m. Game 2 will begin an hour after the conclusion of the first game.

Despite the shuffled schedule and the fact that FSU's weekend series next week is pushed up a day from Thursday through Saturday due to Easter being on Sunday, FSU is keeping the same weekend rotation vs. the Tigers. FSU is using Friday starter Cam Leiter (4-0, 3.37 ERA) in Game 1 of the doubleheader vs. Clemson LHP Ethan Darden (3-0, 4.76 ERA over 11.1 innings. Game 2 will see FSU Saturday starter Jamie Arnold (5-0, 0.33 ERA) vs. an unknown Clemson starter as Darden was not in the Tigers' projected rotation.
