Ting shoots a 71 in second round of Moon Invitational

FSU sports information:

Florida State sophomore Mirabel Ting is in a tie for seventh place in the individual standings with a two-round total of 143, and the Seminole Women’s Golf Team is in ninth place in the team standings after 36 holes in the Seventh Annual Moon Invitational at the Suntree Country Club. Ting led the Seminoles with four birdies en route to a 1-under par score of 71 and begins play in Tuesday’s final round just one stroke out of fifth place. The Seminoles improved their team standing by five positions and are only four strokes out of moving into the top five in the team standings.

The tournament, which has been plagued by weather since the teams arrived at the course on Saturday, was again delayed early in the second round by rain and wet conditions on the greens.

Auburn and LSU enter Tuesday’s final round of play tied for first in the team standings with scores of 573. Maisie Filler of Florida is the individual leader with scores of 66-69 for a 36-hole total of 135. She is four strokes ahead of LSU’s Aine Donegan in the race for the individual championship.

Ting (tied for seventh) and All-American Lottie Woad (tied for 10th) are the Seminoles’ individual leaders heading into play in the final round. Florida State is one of four teams with multiple players in the top-10 of the individual standings following the first two rounds of play. Ting improved her individual standing with her 1 under par score of 71 in the second round, while Woad moved up four spots and into the top-10 of the individual standings.

“A great tournament has unfortunately been disrupted by weather,” FSU coach Amy Bond said. "The thing about having your routine disrupted by the weather is that you can learn from these days and get better. You know it’s going to be cold; you know it’s going to be windy; you know it’s going to be wet. You have to embrace the conditions because this is golf and every round you play is not going to happen in perfect weather. Playing on days like this is certainly mind over matter and, it’s an opportunity to play outside of your comfort zone.”

Ting totaled a team-high four birdies and 15 holes played at par or better in the second round to keep herself in contention to defend her Moon Invitational individual championship from a year ago. She played her front nine under par with two birdies and eight holes played at par or better. Ting closed her back nine with two birdies on her final six holes to finish under par for the second time in five rounds during the first spring of her Florida State career.

Ting has carded six birdies and 31 of 36 holes scored at par or better in the first two rounds of the tournament.

Woad played solid golf for the second consecutive day as she finished with a 1 over par score of 73. She has a two-round total of 144. Woad carded one birdie (on her final hole) and scored 16 of her 18 holes at par or better in finishing with an even-par score of 144 for the first 36 holes.

Woad is playing for her second consecutive top-10 individual finish at the Moon Invitational. She finished in third place in the individual standings in the event in 2023 and is a cumulative total of 10 strokes under par in five career rounds during the Moon. Woad has carded four of her five scores at par or better in the event.

Florida State will play in an All-ACC group of four teams with Louisville, Wake Forest, and Clemson in the final round – a shotgun start – beginning at 9 a.m.

Albright gets hot in opening round of Watersound Invitational

FSU sports information:

Senior lefty Gray Albright posted a 4-under 68 in Monday’s opening round of the Watersound Invitational held at Shark’s Tooth Golf Club near Panama City Beach.

The Ocala, Fla., native is tied for third amongst an elite field, and is the highest-ranked individual golfer in the tournament. Albright is playing unattached to Florida State’s counting team scores, as the Seminoles are tied for eighth after shooting even par on the day.

Albright totaled five birdies and just one bogey in his first round of play, marking his eighth career round in the 60s. His eight rounds have occurred in his last 16 rounds played dating back to last year’s eye-opening win at the Seminole Intercollegiate.

Three Seminoles are tied for 15th with identical 1-under rounds in Jack Bigham, Michael Mays and Cole Anderson. Bigham and Anderson are counting team scores while Mays is also playing as an individual.

Vanderbilt leads the tournament at 10-under, followed by a Top 5 of Clemson (-5), Mississippi State (-5), Notre Dame (-4) and Virginia (-2). Mississippi State’s Hunter Logan and Alabama’s Thomas Ponder are tied atop the player leaderboard at 6-under each.

Florida State has eight competing golfers, which also include Tyler Weaver (Even), Luke Clanton (+2), James Tureskis (+2) and Frederik Kjettrup (+4).

FSU begins play on Tuesday in the second round of the Watersound Invitational beginning at 10:10 a.m. ET/9:10 a.m. CT. Pairings and results can be found on Golfstat.

image.jpg

The best players in the world were already committed to playing in The Genesis Invitational at Riviera Country Club, but on Friday, we learned that golf’s biggest star is set to play, too. Woods, the tournament host, will be making his first official PGA TOUR start since last July.
The 82-time PGA TOUR winner will headline a stacked field, competing for 550 FedExCup points.

FIELD NOTES:

FEDEXCUP: Winner receives 550 FedExCup points.

COURSE:Riviera Country Club, par 71, 7,322 yards. The club, long ranked as one of the best in the world, features a compact design built to test all aspects of a player’s game – especially with the primary rough of club-grabbing Kikuyu. This will mark the 60th time the George C. Thomas Jr. and William P. Bell design will host The Genesis Invitational with plenty more big events to come including the 2026 U.S. Women’s Open and 2028 Olympic Golf competition.

72-HOLE RECORD: 264, Lanny Watkins (1985)
18-HOLE RECORD: 61, George Archer (Round 3, 1983 at Rancho Park GC), Ted Tryba (Round 3, 1999 at Riviera CC)
LAST TIME: Joaquin Niemann became the tournament’s first wire-to-wire winner in 53 years, and set The Genesis Invitational record for lowest 36- and 54-hole scores. He beat Collin Morikawa and Cameron Young by two. Young would go on to win Rookie of the Year honors on the PGA TOUR. Morikawa shot a final-round 65, tied for the low round of the day, to zip up the leaderboard. Adam Scott, twice a winner at Riviera, and Viktor Hovland rounded out the top five, while Justin Thomas was a shot further back and alone in sixth. Defending champion Homa finished T10.

The ACC seems ready to negotiate

https://www.tampabay.com/sports/2024/02/16/fsu-football-florida-state-acc-lawsuit-seminoles/

From today’s court filing: “If Florida State wishes to regain control of the rights before the end of the term, it could attempt to repurchase them,” the filing said. “But having to buy back a right which was assigned is not a penalty; it is simply a commercial possibility.”

First step in the negotiation?

Congratulations Ladies! (WBB)

Big time win today over the canes down at the Watsco Center. Ladies are just outside the top four in the conference standings with just three games left before the conference tourney. Latson just one point shy of another 30 point game. Kay Kay with her fifth straight double double. Team showed a ton of grit today when buckets did not come easy.

Regular season games remaining include BC @ home, Louisville on the road, then the finale at home versus Clemson. Sitting at 10-5 currently, a 12-6 finish looks probable, but I wouldn’t complain about a 13 win year either. Let’s just go ahead and get that double bye 😁

Go Noles!

Football Recruiting Recruiting Rumor Mill: Southeast standouts shine as camp season heats up

Following time in the state of Georgia, which included Under Armour's Atlanta camp on Sunday, Rivals.com national recruiting analyst John Garcia has the latest chatter on many of the best prospects in the Southeast.

Analysis: ACC Response rooted in venue argument for N.C. Court

We've broken the ACC's response to FSU's amended complaint in Florida into two articles. This one addresses what we believe is an argument to Florida Judge Cooper to dismiss or stay FSU's amended motion in Florida in favor of a North Carolina venue, which the ACC argues is more appropriate for four reasons.
A second article will address the ACC's response to a number of assertions in their Feb. 16 filiing, including the ACC's response to FSU's assertion that the Grant of Rights is excessively punitive. In a lengthy and response, the ACC defends itself by saying the witdrawal fee is not punitive but an opportunity for FSU to buy its rights back, something we've long known. Some have interpreted that to be the first hint the ACC may be willing to negotiate. In an abundance of caution, we've asked our legal analysts to weigh in on that response and other items for what will be a second article on this topic.
FSU filed a similar motion to dismiss or stay in North Carolina, which that court has scheduled for a March 22 hearing.
We invite you to weigh in with your thoughts.

Baseball Live Updates: Florida State vs. Butler Game 2 (12:00pm)

Good morning. Florida State will finally be retaking the field for their second and now FINAL game of the series against Butler.

First pitch is scheduled for roughly around 12pm EST but rain is expected in the hour leadup to the game so that does have a small chance of changing the start time.

Jamie Arnold will take the bump in his first start of the season and McGwire Holbrook will make his first start of the season behind the plate.

Here are the rest of your starting lineups:

I know it’s only one game. . .

And the pitchers will garner the lion’s share of the spotlight in the baseball opener (they were fantastic), but I was sure happy to see what seemed to be much better at bats from the entire lineup. They consistently laid off of pitches that they seemingly would have offered at in the past. Only 3k’s all game and lots many of the outs were loud outs. I was happy to see an improved mentality in the box. Let’s hope this team continues to build, but they looked very good last night and took care of business against a lesser opponent.
