Basketball Pregame notes: FSU at Virginia Tech (9 p.m. on ESPNU)

Florida State (13-10, 7-5 ACC) travels to Virginia Tech (13-10, 5-7) on Tuesday at 9 p.m. on ESPNU. Bob Wischusen and Jon Crispen will be on the call.

This is a big opportunity for FSU to position itself for one of the top four seeds in the ACC Tournament. The Seminoles (7-5) are chasing Wake (8-5) in the league standings. If FSU can pick up a fifth league road win, they would pull even with the Demon Deacons but have the tiebreaker edge on the head-to-head win.

The Seminoles are seeking to defeat VT for the eighth time in the last 10 meetings.

FSU will wear its turquoise Nike Seminole Heritage uniforms on Tuesday night. It’s the eighth time the Seminoles have worn the uniforms for an ACC game, and FSU is 5-2.

The Seminoles are shooting 31.5 percent from 3-point range after a dreadful 2-of-16 performance against Virginia. FSU ranks 281st in Division I in shooting percentage from beyond the arc. It feels like FSU is capable of hitting 3s in bunches, almost streaky, with Darin Green Jr. able to make some from NBA range and beyond. But the full-season numbers show it's not a strength.

Cam Corhen is shooting 80.6 percent from the floor (25 of 31) in his last seven games.

FSU had eight blocks against Virginia on Saturday and now has 98 on the season.

VT has dropped three straight games (Duke, Miami and Notre Dame) and is ranked 62nd by KenPom.

Football Roydell Williams smiles but leads by showing physicality on field

Roydell Williams grew up in Hueytown, Ala., and on many Friday nights watched Jameis Winston play football.

“With me being such a young age, I used to go to all of the high school football games,” Williams recalled. “It was kind of wild to see him on the team (at FSU). He won the Heisman. At a young age, I’m still kind of figuring things out. I know what’s going on, but I don’t. It was like, ‘Ok, I can do that there. Let’s try it. Let’s go for it.’ ”

Williams was motivated in part by Winston. And on Tuesday he reflected on being in elementary school, watching YouTube workout videos, wanting to do push-ups and sit-ups. “I wanted to be built,” he said.

Latson one of 30 named to Naismith player of the year midseason team

FSU sports information:

Florida State sophomore guard Ta’Niya Latson is one of 30 players nationally selected to the 2024 Jersey Mike’s Naismith Trophy Player of the Year Midseason Team, announced on Tuesday by the Atlanta Tipoff Club.

Latson adds another in-season national honor to her list. She is on the Wooden Award Late Season 20, the Wade Trophy list as well as the Ann Meyers Drysdale Top 10 Finalist list.

Last season, the Miami native was also on the Naismith Trophy Midseason Team.

She leads the ACC this season with five 30-point games in conference play, coming off a 34-point performance against No. 12 Notre Dame. She ranks fourth in the league with 22.2 points per game in conference play, ranks third in assists per game (5.23) and also third in assist/turnover ratio (1.62).

Latson and the Seminoles face a key five-game stretch to end the regular season, starting with a road game at Wake Forest on Thursday at 6 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.

Football 12 FSU football alumni picked to attend this year's NFL Scouting Combine

FSU will have a bunch of representation later this month at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. 12 Seminoles have been invited to attend, including players from almost every position group.

Football FSU RB Kam Davis focused on building speed this offseason in pursuit of instant impact in 2024

Of all of FSU's 2024 high-school enrollees, longtime running back commit Kam Davis looks to be among the most ready to contribute.

He's working on his speed and conditioning this offseason (and keeping receipts of people who think he's not fast enough).

Football FSU set for Day 1 of ACC Kickoff event in Charlotte on Monday, July 22nd

Even though the 2023 football season just came to an end, we're already looking ahead to the 2024 season.

The ACC announced Monday that the ACC Kickoff media event in July will be a four-day event for the first time in conference history, spanning July 22nd through 25 at the Hilton Uptown Charlotte. The ACC also announced that FSU, which has a Week 0 game vs. Georgia Tech in ireland on Aug. 24, will go for the first day of the event on July 22nd alongside Georgia Tech, SMU and ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips.

FSU being in an active lawsuit against its conference will no doubt be a talking point, especially with FSU talking the same day as Phillips. Additionally, it remains to be seen if this will be FSU's final ACC Kickoff, with the university having until Aug. 15 to announce it is leaving the ACC in time for the 2025 football season.

Greatness

Watched great players like Wayne Gretzky, Magic, Bird, Montana, Jordan, Brady....mahommes is in that group. Cheering against them is a waste of time. I have been on the other side of many great performances from these guys....and many of us get upset cheering for the guy on the opposite side. More times than not your team is not beating these guys.

Golf PGSF FedEx Cup Week 6: The WM Phoenix Open (sign-up is open)

Seven of the world's top 10 are entered for "The Greatest Show on Grass," which will again play to raucous, sold-out crowds.

Super Bowl week is here and, in a sense, so is the PGA Tour's Super Bowl.
Nothing on Tour is like the WM Phoenix Open, the self-described "Greatest Show on Grass" which plays to insanely large crowds with a good chunk of that insanity circling the par-3 16th hole at TPC Scottsdale.
A famous story Kenny Perry tells is when he checked into a Scottsdale hotel and told the clerk that he was in town for the Phoenix Open. "Oh, I love the Phoenix Open," she said. "I go there every night.”
So it's not exactly always about the golf at the WMPO. Want more evidence? Last year's edition was a signature event, featuring virtually all the Tour's top stars playing for a $20 million purse. But this year the event returned to "regular" status on Tour with an $8.8 million purse—and general admission tickets are sold out for Friday and Saturday.

Many big names are still coming, however, including world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler who is chasing a three-peat. Only four players have won three Phoenix Opens in its 90-year-plus history (Arnold Palmer, Gene Littler, Mark Calcavecchia, Phil Mickelson) and none did so in three consecutive years. The last player to win any Tour event three years in a row was Steve Stricker at the John Deere Classic from 2009–11.
The only players from the top 10 in the world not coming are Jon Rahm, who left for LIV Golf; and Rory McIlroy and Patrick Cantlay, who are taking the week off.
Below is the rest of the field for the Tour's wildest week.

Softball FSU softball rolls to 8-2 win over FAMU on Sunday

FSU sports information:

The No. 4 Florida State softball team (4-1) defeated the Florida A&M Rattlers 8-2 on Sunday afternoon at the Seminole Softball Complex in the final game of the JoAnne Graf Classic.

Ashtyn Danley earned her second career start on Sunday and pitched for three full innings while striking out two and allowing two runs on five hits.

Florida State came out aggressive in the bottom of the first as Isa Torres started things off with a double. The Seminoles continued to work the count to draw three walks to with a walk that gave Florida State the early 1-0 lead over Florida A&M. At the next at-bat, freshman Jaysoni Beachum singled into deep right field, giving the Seminoles another two runs to increase their lead to 3-0. Kaley Mudge picked up her third RBI of the season to make the score 4-0 after the first inning.

The scoring didn't stop for the Noles in the second inning as Jahni Kerr led off with a single to start the inning. Kennedy Harp came in for Kerr on the base paths, and after advancing to second on a groundout, Harp stole third and score two pitches later on a grounder from Kalei Harding.

Michaela Edenfield drew a walk, and Amaya Ross reached on an error to put runners on the corners for the Noles. Edenfield scampered home when Ross stole second. Devyn Flaherty singled to left field to bring Ross home to give the Noles a 7-0 lead.

The Rattlers (0-5) score two runs in the top of the fourth inning, but Harding answered right back with her third home run and 11th RBI in five games for the Seminoles. Makenna Reid closed out the game by retiring eight out of the final nine batters.

The Seminoles will now play four top 10 opponents in four days at the Shriners Children's Clearwater Invitational. The Seminoles will open their week in Clearwater against No. 3 Stanford on Thursday at 4 p.m. on ESPNU.
