Lets talk Gators. . .

Because it's fun right now.

Many of their fans are seriously predicting like 8-9 wins next season. You occasionally get the "rational" gator fan who recognizes their schedule and says they may win closer to 7-8.

What?!?!?

I don't see UF defense being any improved this upcoming season. With Pearsoll and Etienne being gone, I just can't imagine their offense will be improved, and should be significantly worse.

With that schedule, man. . .do we see another 4-8 UF season on the horizon leading to gator mutiny and dumping more fuel to the already burning dumpster fire that is uf football?

Would be a good steal….

Bama OT Kadyn Proctor planning on hitting the portal. Former 5* and started all of their games this season. The Trenches are pretty much solidified on DL especially if / when Farmer comes back. Proctor would be a very nice add. With the talent we have at the skilled positions and QB if we can put together an elite OL it’s gonna be UGLY for everyone next yr.

FSU 84 Miami 75 The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

FSU 84 Miami 75 The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

The Good

FSU's record after tonight's win, 11-6 overall, 5-1 ACC in earning its fifth consecutive victory.. Coming into the game, Miami had won 25 of their last 27 at the Watsco Center. Make that 25 of their last 28. Coming into the game, FSU had won five straight at the Watsco. Make that 6-0. It also marks the 1,300th win in the program's history. Even more of a plus when you reach a plateau like that against your rival. Coming into the game, FSU were 5.5 point dogs. Enough said right there. The Seminoles led by as many as sixteen, 53-37, Credit the 'Noles for fending off a furious push by the Hurricanes who closed it to two points twice. Miami caught fire led by Nigel Pack's outrageously deep three pointers. FSU never trailed in the game.

When it was crunch time, the 'Canes went cold at the worst time. In the last 2:02, Miami was 0-4 from the floor, missed two FTs, and turned the ball over twice.

Coach Larranaga waving the white flag and calling off his players with 30 seconds left of the game clock. That's a lot of clock left even if you are down by nine ........ which they were.

Below average. FSU's defense held Miami below their season averages in three pointers made (7 vs nearly the 10 per game) and points scored (75 to 84 ppg). Miami is the second best team at the stripe shooting 79%. Tonight, just 14-24, 58%. Maybe of more interest, to 'Noles fans anyway, was the way below average game of former Seminole and current Hurricane Matthew Cleveland. Miami's second leading scorer at 16.4 ppg scored just 2 points on 1 of 8 shooting. If you recall his play at Florida State, Cleveland almost exclusively went to his right. Not much has changed and FSU players obviously knew that forcing him to take several off balance shots going to his left. Better luck next time Matthew (not really).

Clearly the game plan was to attack the interior of the Miami defense (something confirmed by Baba Miller in his post game interview). Miami plays just eight so they cannot afford to get into foul trouble making it a bit easier to drive to the rim and score. And they have no real shot blocker. All that was exposed tonight as FSU garnered 52 points in the paint shooting a stellar 57% inside the arc (good thing too).

Team effort once again. As noted earlier, Miami plays just eight. FSU OTOH played six reserves tonight. So obviously bench points were far in favor of the 'Noles, 40-14. Various players, both starting and from the bench, had pockets of moments where they dominated the game.

Although Leonard Hamilton commented in postgame that his team needs more wok on ball movement, FSU did dish out 17 assists tonight.

Cameron Corhen (7-7 shooting) and Primo Spears tied for team high honors with 16 points each. Jamir Watkins scored 15 and DeAnte Green added 10.

Plays of the game. Watkins with the sure to be on ESPN's Top Ten and the emphatic slam dunk over Norchad Omier, 81-75. Watkins with the floater, a basket badly needed at that moment, to put FSU back up 57-47. Watkins again with the dribble drive along the left side baseline flipping it in, 62-57. Watkins (you sense a pattern here) using the down screen curling into the lane, receiving the pass, and floating the ball into the hoop, 79-73. Corhen with the three at the buzzer, 71-62. Jalen Warley wrapping the ball around Nomier to DeAnte Green, 49-37. Warley with the one handed bullet pass finding Corhen for the lay up, 27-20. Corhen's steal right under the UM basket plus the foul, 30-20. Warley with a steal and coast to coast slam dunk, 59-49. Gainey's blocked shot right under the FSU rim maintaining 38-28 lead. Ganey's left hand only tap in ORb, 34-24. What a reach to be able to get that ball. Spears blazing drive down the lane, fouled, and sinks both freebies giving FSU its final points of the game. The nine point lead forced Miami to jack low percentage shots.

The Bad

Josh Nickelberry with the charging foul that you could see coming the moment he put the ball on the floor.

To reinforce Hamilton's comment about ball movement, there were too many times that quick shots were launched almost the moment the offense crossed the time line.

Warley driving right into the taller UM defender thinking he could make the basket. He had done that earlier in the game and got away with the wild shot. Not this time as the way off target shot turned into a fast break for Miami and now the 'Canes had it under ten, 54-45. It helped jump start a UM run.

Chandler Jackson with two turnovers, both from poor passing, in 6 minutes PT. Not a memorable game for him.

Warley and a terrible alley oop pass that was picked off igniting a fast break lay up that squeezed the lead down to 59-54. Its odd how he will have these really outstanding plays and then we see something like this. The consistency is not there yet.

Darin Green started off on fire with two early 3's. He was barely heard from again as the 'Noles were not able to get the ball to him.

The Ugly

4-17 three point shooting. Ugh!!!!!

After about three or four times of seeing Miami just race right to the basket with no one trying to stop the ball, you had to wonder if this was going happen all game long. Fortunately it did not as the FSU defense tightened up a bit.

After several games of quality FT shooting in the 80's, FSU backtracked converting just 14-23 (60%). It was actually worse than that for much of the game.

With FSU up 53-37, UM went on a 20-6 and the 'Noles led just 59-57.

Refs to the monitor yet another time. Man, that sort of thing just sllllllllooooooooooowwwwwwwwsssssss the game down.

Up Next

FSU returns home to face the Clemson Tigers (12-5, 2-4). Tip is at 4 PM and the games will be aired on the ACCN. Clemson at one time was ranked as high as 13th at 9-0. It has been downhill since with the Tigers losing four of their last five, all conference games. Their latest loss was last night in a double OT defeat to GT. Clemson was up by three with seconds left until GT connected on a game tying three to send the game into OT.

So what do we think, one more LB and one more DT?

Unless an ubertalented type player pops into the portal and really wants to come to FSU at whatever position, I think we would now be fine with one more LB and one more DT. Obviously, I hope if we land at these positions that they are all world type players, but I think we will really be formidable if they are even very solid players who can be good contributors.

Syracuse rallies in fourth quarter to defeat FSU women's hoops

FSU sports information:

A furious comeback by 25th-ranked Syracuse resulted in a 79-73 loss by No. 15 Florida State Women’s Basketball on Thursday night at the JMA Wireless Dome.

The Seminoles (14-5, 5-2) held a 54-36 lead with 7:58 remaining in the third quarter, but Syracuse’s Dyaisha Fair proved to be too much as she sparked the comeback with 31 points on 24 field-goal attempts.

Sophomore guard Ta’Niya Latson recorded 22 points with nine assists, while junior forward Makayla Timpson added 16 points and 12 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the season.

Timpson also recorded her 22nd career double-double, moving into a tie for sixth place in FSU history. Sophomore Snoop Turnage added 10 boards. Both teams tied on the glass at 40-40, but the Seminoles held a large advantage in the rebounding battle for much of the game until Syracuse caught up late.

Junior guard O’Mariah Gordon had a solid performance with 16 points, three rebounds and two assists.

FSU out-scored Syracuse 46-22 in the paint, but the Orange made up for it by going 10-of-21 beyond the arc.

The Seminoles were out-scored 25-11 in what was a crucial fourth quarter, which had been their best quarter of the season entering Thursday’s game. FSU came out of a timeout and got a layup by Latson and the foul to re-take the lead at 69-67, but back-to-back 3-point field goals by Fair gave the Orange a 73-69 lead with 2:43 left.

Timpson made good on a shot in the paint to cut FSU’s deficit to 75-73, but the Seminoles were unable to convert offensively for the remaining minute.

The Seminoles return home on Sunday for a 2 p.m. tip with Virginia at the Tucker Center. Sunday’s game is FSU’s Military Appreciation Game, where active duty and former servicemen and women can contact the ticket office for discounted tickets at 1-888-FSU-NOLE.

Football Recruiting Football coaches push to separate signing day, December portal window

When college football coaches met in Nashville last week at the American Football Coaches Association convention, there was a strong opinion that the December recruiting calendar needs to be revised.

College coaches juggled a busy schedule in December, one that included a transfer portal window, early signing day, bowl practices and exit interviews. But AFCA executive director Todd Berry, who has been the head coach at Army and Louisiana-Monroe, said the organization will again make a push to alleviate some of the scheduling challenges.

“What we’ve advocated is let’s put the signing date in front of the portal opening,” Berry told the Osceola and a small group of reporters on Zoom last week. “What we suggested is at the very start of that four-day dead period, let’s have signing day at that point in time. Coaches have to be off the road. It makes perfect sense to put it in that location.

“I think we’re all unanimous that we’ve got to get it out of where the portal is right now because it’s not fair to anybody in the location that it’s at. And we certainly don’t want to get rid of that early signing date because it has done what we asked it to do.”

Anybody else already hitting the koolaid?

I know I am.

I honestly believe this will be the best offense in the Norvell Era. When the dust settles and the cream rises to the top of the WR room, RB room, OL room, I think we will have some elite talent on display. DJ does not have to be a super star to end up a super star if you know what I mean. If he plays consistently, uses his size to pick up some third downs when needed, and spreads the ball around, his numbers could be huge by season's end. This running game should have it all, size, speed, elusiveness. . .and having a DE at QB will help the cause.

I know it may be premature to say we won't miss a beat on defense, because it's some huge shoes to fill with the departures. . .but I feel the defense as a whole will end up better than last year and will be able to gamble more with the leads the offense will provide.

The schedule sets up nicely, I believe the ND game on the road will be our toughest. . .and the good thing is, even if we lose that one, it won't affect our ACC championship chances. Clemson is in Tally. A lot of people are worried about Miami because on paper, they seem to have added some talent. . .but Cristobal. The man is so dumb he stared at a bottle of Miami orange juice for three hours because it said "concentrate" on the side.

I believe it's possible we have back-to-back undefeated seasons. I said it.

FSU women's hoops travels to No. 25 Syracuse on Thursday

FSU sports information:

No. 15 Florida State (14-4, 5-1) and 25th-ranked Syracuse (14-2, 4-1) meet for the 12th time on Thursday night at the JMA Wireless Dome at 7 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.

The Seminoles were the biggest riser in this week’s AP Top 25 poll, moving up six spots following back-to-back ranked wins at home over No. 20 North Carolina (70-62) and No. 11 Virginia Tech (89-81). Syracuse, while unranked by the AP Poll, moved into the Top 25 in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll.

Fifth-year guard Sara Bejedi racked up the national honors this week, being named the National Player of the Week by ESPN, the Naismith Trophy and the USBWA. The Helsinki, Finland, native averaged 27.0 points, shot 50 percent (15-of-30) from the floor, shot 55.6 percent (10-of-18) from deep and averaged 7.0 rebounds in the Seminoles’ two wins last week.

Bejedi was also named to the NCAA’s Starting Five on Wednesday for her performances last week.

FSU begins 5-1 in ACC play for the second straight season under head coach Brooke Wyckoff. The Noles are going for their first 6-1 start to ACC play since the 2017-18 season.

Sophomore guard Ta’Niya Latson has proven to be much more than a scorer, also facilitating extremely well as teams continue to key on her. Latson is averaging 7.0 assists over FSU’s last three games vs. Clemson (8), North Carolina (5) and Virginia Tech (8). Latson has three of the ACC’s nine 30-point games in conference play, with Elizabeth Kitley from Virginia Tech (2) being the other player with multiple games.

Thursday’s matchup is a meeting of two talented head coaches who both lead their alma maters. Wyckoff was an All-America performer for the Seminoles and earned All-ACC honors in all four seasons. Syracuse head coach Felisha Legette-Jack was a two-time All-American with the Orange and a three-time All-BIG EAST selection.

Florida State boasts the ACC’s top scoring offense in conference play at 80.8 points per game. Overall, the Seminoles rank 13th nationally averaging 83.8 points per game.

FSU and Syracuse each are in the Top 3 of the current ACC standings, with FSU solely in second (5-1) and Syracuse tied for third (4-1).

My prediction for breakout player of 2024

Destyn Hill

Let's not forget how far removed he was from organized football before he enrolled. He kept in shape, and was working on football related drills, but was not with a team to really stay involved in concepts and offensive schemes.

We heard how as the year progressed, he began to make some great plays on the practice field, and it was obvious about what kind of ability he has. I feel like his growth from year one to year two with the program will be substantial. . . far more than any other player from last year to this year.

The WR room is loaded with talent, so, similar to last year, defenses will have to pick their poison, and it should leave plenty of opportunity for wr's to break out some big plays, I think he will have a huge season.
