Golf Lottie Woad is named ACC golfer of the year

FSU sports information:

Florida State’s Lottie Woad was named the ACC Golfer of the Year, and Woad and Mirabel Ting were named to the All-ACC Women’s Golf team in a vote by the league’s 12 head coaches and announced by the league office. Woad is the third Seminole to win the ACC Golfer of the Year award – Seminole All-American Frida Kinhult was the co-ACC Golfer of the Year in 2019 and Beatrice Wallin was named as the ACC’s best golfer in 2021.

It marks the third time in the six years that a Florida State player has been named as the ACC Golfer of the Year. The award was not presented in 2020.

With Ting and Woad named to the All-ACC team, it marks the eighth consecutive year that at least two Seminoles have been named to the All-ACC Women’s Golf Team. It also marks the second consecutive year Woad has earned All-ACC honors, and the second consecutive year Ting has earned all-conference honors as she was named to the All-Southland Conference team in 2023 at Augusta University before transferring to Florida State.

“We are so very proud of both Lottie and Mirabel for earning All-ACC honors this season,” said Head Coach Amy Bond. “Lottie has had such a great and consistent year and deserved to be named the ACC Golfer of the Year. What a great accomplishment for her as a sophomore. I’m looking forward to watching her continued growth as both a player and as a young woman; she‘s going to do great things in the future.”

Bond now boasts at least one All-ACC golfer in each of her years as Florida State’s head coach. Her streak began in 2012 and counts 26 All-ACC selections since 2012.

“It’s wonderful to have players on the All-ACC team for a 12th straight year,” said Bond. “It’s great for Lottie and Mirabel, and it’s great for our program. As a coaching staff, we are very proud of all of our players, now and throughout our time at Florida State, and the caliber of people who help elevate our program every year.”

At the No. 3 ranked golfer in the nation by Clippd, Woad enters next week’s NCAA Las Vegas Regional Championship as the highest ranked golfer in the ACC. She leads the Seminoles with a 70.00 stroke average in 18 rounds during six tournaments. Woad has scored 15 of her 18 rounds at par or better and 17 of her 18 rounds at 75 or better. She has scored seven of her 18 collegiate rounds in the 60’s and is a total of 30 strokes under par for her entire sophomore season. Woad won the individual championship of the ANNIKA Invitational in September and has finished in the top-eight in the individual standings of each of her six collegiate tournaments this year.

Woad won the championship of the Augusta National Women’s Amateur – the most prestigious women’s amateur tournament in the world on April 6, 2024. The final round of the ANWA was played on the famed Augusta National Golf Course.

“I’m honored and humbled to be named the ACC Golf of the Year and to the All-ACC team for the second time in my career,” said Woad. “There are so many people who have made these awards so special including all of my coaches, Coach Bond, Coach Duck, Coach Heisey, and Coach Jones. My heart is so full of appreciation to all of my teammates who have been so supportive of me this spring. Without my teammates and their confidence and complete support throughout the year, my success would not have been possible. To so many people, I say thank you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

Woad and Ting are both ranked in the top 15 in the nation. Florida State is the only team in the ACC to have multiple players ranked in the nation’s top 15.

Ting enters NCAA regional championship play on Monday for the second time in her career ranked 15th nationally and as the third-highest ranked golfer in the ACC. She is ranked second in the team with a 71.07 stroke average. She won the individual championship of the Valspar Augusta Invitational on March. Ting is a total of 10 strokes under par and has earned four top-seven finishes in four collegiate events as a Seminole.

Ting finished in a tie for eighth place in the standings at the AWNA. She finished with a 1-over par score of 217. Her score included a 69 in the first round of the championship.

“Earning All-ACC honors is a great accomplishment for me and our team,” said Ting. “The way my teammates have accepted me onto the team in my first year as a Seminole has allowed me to understand what Coach Bond’s program is all about – it’s about family. I’m so happy that we get to continue our season at regionals next week. It’s going to be an exciting time for all of us as teammates and a family.”

Florida State begins play in its 18th consecutive regional championship at the Spanish Trail Country Club and Golf Course in Las Vegas on Monday.

“We are thrilled for Lottie and Mirabel for their honors and accomplishments,” said Bond. “There is work ahead of us, and we have to focus on being at our best at Spanish Trail. This is a confident bunch entering regionals; we have worked hard to get ready for this time of the year. We have to focus on what we can control and play Florida State golf over three rounds next week. We are all excited to get out west.”

Baseball FSU making push for top-8 national seed

Consistent teams from start to finish, February through May, earn top-8 national seeds.

A year ago, the Florida State baseball team was a model of inconsistency. This Seminoles team has had bumps in the road, err, on the road. But the resume compares favorably to the nation’s top teams and FSU could be home to host a regional for the first time since 2018.

FSU (34-9) is in position to secure a top 8 national seed one year after winning just 23 games and missing out on the NCAA postseason for the first time since the 1970s. That has made the Seminoles one of the best stories nationally in 2024 even though the program has a storied history.

“You're not going to be a top eight seed if you don’t finish the season well, you can get buried early in the season,” FSU coach Link Jarrett said. “You have to start to finish play the game properly and play well and hopefully you can stay healthy. Make no mistake, that's part of it. So if you come out of the gates and are on point and have things organized in a way that the guys understand what they're getting into, you manage the weekends, you manage some tough midweek games. There's no breathing room in the middle of the week. You have to do it start to finish and we're on that track.”

Basketball Basketball Depth Chart 24-25

So, if I did the math correctly, and the players currently in the transfer portal leave (Warley, Miller, Fletcher), here is the depth chart for next season :

PG - Jackson, Davis (This group is actually set. Don't think we need another PG)
SG - ? (This is by far our biggest need. Need two transfers who can step on the court game 1)
SF - ? , Swinton (Need a starting SF as Swinton won't be a day 1 starter)
PF - Bol Bowen, Deng (This group is pretty much set as well)
C - Ewin, Nitu (Could use a backup center. Nitu will be a redshirt candidate)

Am i missing anyone? Overall looks like we need 3-4 more transfers. And starting caliber players, not developmental players.

Softball FSU, UF set for round 2 of top-15 showdown

FSU sports information:

The No. 14 Florida State softball team (40-10, 18-3) will look to complete the season sweep over the No. 9 Florida Gators (39-12, 14-7) on Wednesday night in front of an expected capacity crowd at JoAnne Graf Field.

First pitch is set for 7 p.m. and can be seen live on ACC Network with Pam Ward and Jenny Dalton-Hill on the call. Fans can also listen to the game on 96.5 FM The Spear, Seminoles.com and the FSU Gameday App with Jeff Culhane and Ariya Massoudi on the call.

What's On the Line?

  • Besides bragging rights in one of college softball's greatest rivalries, Wednesday night's game in Tallahassee will have major implications for the Seminoles.
  • FSU will be looking for its seventh consecutive win against the Gators.
  • FSU has not lost to Florida in Tallahassee since 2019.
  • FSU will be looking to sweep the season series for just the sixth time in program history.
  • FSU will be looking to add to its resume with a top 10 win to help their case to host a regional for the 10th consecutive season. FSU comes into Wednesday night with a No. 10 ranking in the RPI.
  • The Seminoles come into the rivalry matchup as one of the hottest teams in the country. FSU has won 22 out of its 23 games and are on a 14 game winning streak which is the second longest winning streak in the country.
A Rivalry Rout

  • It was all Seminoles on Wednesday night as FSU won its sixth consecutive game against rival Florida with a 12-3 run-rule win in Gainesville.
  • FSU scored 12 runs in the fifth inning after being down 2-0. FSU's 12 runs in the inning was tied for the third-most in program history and tied for the most in program history against a Power Five opponent.
  • Wednesday was the first time that FSU had scored 10 or more runs in an inning against a ranked opponent.
  • Wednesday was FSU's largest margin of victory against the Gators and was the first time that FSU had run-ruled the Gators in the series.

Built To Finish

  • A Lonni Alameda coached team is always going to finish the season strong and this year seems to be no different.
  • FSU will finish 16-1 in April and has outscored its opponents 135-34.
  • In the past four seasons. Florida State is 90-11-1 during the months of April and May.

Oh, How the Tables Have Turned

  • After losing four out of five games to the likes of Alabama, Duke and Texas, the Seminoles have won 22 out of their last 23 games and are in sole possession of first place in the ACC.
  • 12 out of FSU's 22 wins have come via run rule.
  • FSU has jumped up to No. 10 in the RPI and have put themselves in great condition to host a regional for the 10th consecutive season
  • FSU has outscored their opponent 200-55 and are averaging 8.69 runs per game in its past 23 games.
  • During their eight-game winning streak from Mar. 23-Apr. 3, FSU scored at least eight runs in all eight of those games during the winning streak. That tied the school record for the longest streak of scoring eight or more runs. The last time FSU accomplished the feat was from Mar. 19-31, 2019.
  • FSU's pitching has made significant strides over the past 23 games as they hold a 2.67 ERA and have allowed more than five runs just twice in the last 23 games after allowing five or more runs 11 times in the first 27 games.

Limiting the Big Inning

  • One key to FSU's recent pitching success has been limiting the big inning.
  • In the first 27 games, FSU allowed three or more runs in 17 innings. In the last 23 games, FSU has allowed three more runs in just five innings.
  • FSU has also been limiting their free bases in the last 23 games. FSU is allowing just 2.6 free bases per game which is down from 3.5 free bases per game in their first 27 games.
  • FSU has also seen a significant improvement in its team ERA as they have posted a 2.67 ERA in the last 20 games compared to a 4.21 ERA in the first 27 games.

Wait, They're Only Freshmen?!?!?!

  • Yes, some of Florida State's best production has come from a freshmen class that was ranked the No. 3 overall class by softball America.
  • Jaysoni Beachum (.447) and Isa Torres (.377) hold two out of the top four batting averages on the team.
  • Both Beachum and Torres were named Top 25 finalists for the TUCCI/NFCA National Freshman of the Year award on Thursday.
  • In the circle, Ashtyn Danley has recorded a team-high 17 starts and 106.2 innings.
  • Mimi Gooden has also been a force for the Noles in the circle as she has pitched 35.2 innings and made eight starts.
  • All five freshman hitters have recorded a hit and a RBI this season with Torres, Beachum and Kennedy Harp all recording 10+ hits.
  • The six freshmen have made a combined 133 starts this season.
  • 144 out of the team's 469 (31%) hits have come from freshmen.

  • Iowa is the only power five team in the country to have more offensive production come from freshmen.
  • 43% of the team's innings pitched have come from freshmen.

Youth in the Circle

  • A program that has continuously put together one of the best pitching staffs in the country has faced a new challenge this year....youth.
  • 74% of innings thrown this year have been from either freshman or sophomores.
  • 43% of the innings pitched have been from true freshmen.
  • Freshmen and sophomores have combined to start 34 out of the Seminoles' 50 games this season.

Get Hot, Stay Hot

  • The Florida State offense has been one of the best in the country through the first 47 games of the season.
  • FSU is averaging 7.88 runs per game which is fifth in the country and second in the ACC. FSU is hitting .347 as a team which ranks sixth in the country.
  • FSU has scored 395 runs through 50 games this season which is on pace to break the school record of 459 runs scored by the 2016 team. The 2016 team scored 388 runs through 50 games.
  • In 50 games, FSU has scored 8 or more runs in 31 games. In 69 games last season, FSU scored eight or more runs just 22 times.
  • FSU has scored 10 or more runs in 16 games so far this season after accomplishing that feat just eight times last season.

Dominance in the ACC

  • Florida State has been on top of the ACC for the past decade.
  • FSU has won eight out of the last nine ACC Tournament Championships and seven out of the last nine ACC Regular Season Championships.
  • Since 2012, FSU has lost just three ACC road series and has not lost an ACC road series since 2019.
  • FSU has lost just three ACC series in the last four seasons and have lost just five ACC series since 2012.

A True Home Field Advantage

  • The Seminole Softball Complex has become one of the toughest places to play in the country in recent history.
  • Since the start of the 2019 season, FSU is 149-22 at the Seminole Softball Complex.
  • In the past two seasons, FSU is 61-9 at the Seminole Softball Complex.

Call It What It Is. Jaysoni Beachum is the Best Freshman in the Country

  • Jaysoni Beachum has continued to solidify herself as not only one of the best freshmen in the country but as one of the best players in the country.
  • Beachum, a native of Tallahassee, leads the team with a .447 batting average, 68 hits, 14 home runs and 59 RBI.
  • Her 59 RBI is the most ever by a Florida State freshman as she broke Sydney Sherrill's record of 58 RBI this past Saturday.
  • Beachum has hit seven home runs in her last 10 games.
  • In her last seven games, Beachum has recorded 14 RBI
  • Beachum is just the third true freshman in school history to have 10+ home runs and 50+ RBI joining Jessi Warren and Sydney Sherrill.
  • Beachum has recorded a hit in 38 out of the Seminoles' 50 games this season.
  • Out of the 50 games this season, Beachum has had two or more hits in 25 games.

  • Beachum is on pace to break the freshmen school record for batting average, hits, slugging percentage and on base percentage in a season.
  • Beachum has had two multi-home run games this season. Beachum is the first true freshman since Kalei Harding in 2021 to have a multi-home run game.
  • Beachum has also locked down the hot corner for the Noles making 49 starts at the positions. Beachum has committed just five errors this season.
  • Beachum was named the ACC Player of the Week on Apr. 23 and became the first FSU true freshman to win the award since Sydney Sherrill in 2018.
  • Beachum was named Softball America's Freshman of the Month in February, March and April.

Ocho's Being Ocho

  • Kalei Harding or "Ocho" continues to be a consistent force for the Florida State lineup and is solidifying herself as one of the top hitters in program history
  • Harding is currently hitting .348 with 53 RBI which is second on the team.
  • In ACC play, Harding is hitting .485 with four home runs and 26 RBI.
  • Harding has reached base in 21 out of the last 23 games.

  • Harding is second all-time in school history for career doubles (55), fourth in school history for career home runs (41), fourth for career RBI (193) and seventh in school history for career slugging percentage (.584).

  • Her average is up to .384 after hitting .449 in the Seminoles' last 23 games.
  • Against Notre Dame, Mudge went 7-for-10 (.700) with two doubles and a triple.
  • Mudge has been the Seminoles' leadoff hitter in 32 out of the last 33 games

Edenfield is Back and Already Making an Impact

  • After redshirting her freshman season, Michaela Edenfield has taken the sport by storm and has been one of the nation's best power and clutch hitters.
  • In her first two seasons, Edenfield has recorded two 50+ RBI seasons. Edenfield is one of just six Seminoles who have ever recorded two 50+ RBI seasons as a Seminole.
  • Edenfield joined Jessi Warren and Sydney Sherrill as the only Seminoles to have 50+ RBI in their first two seasons in the Garnet and Gold.
  • Edenfield will look to join Warren as the only two Seminoles who have recorded three 50+ RBI seasons. Warren had four 50+ RBI seasons as a Seminole.
  • Last season, Edenfield was phenomenal when it mattered most. In 2023, 25 out of her 39 hits (64%) resulted in a run being scored. So far in 2024, 19 out of Edenfield's 42 hits (45%) have resulted in a run being scored.
  • Edenfield missed nine games due to a broken finger but made her return last week against North Carolina as a designated player. Edenfield went 3-for-6 with one home run and three RBI against the Tar Heels.
  • Edenfield is hitting .404 this season after having not finished with above a .300 batting average in her first two seasons as a Seminole.
  • Edenfield currently sits fifth in FSU history with 40 career home runs.

Torres Finds Groove in the Box and in the Field

  • Replacing Josie Muffley is no easy task, but freshman Isa Torres has given her best shot and is off to a great start offensively and defensively for the Noles at the shortstop position.
  • Torres is fourth on the team in batting average (.377) and has driven in 46 runs this season.
  • Torres has been phenomenal in the Seminoles' last 23 games hitting .418 with five home runs and 26 RBI.
  • Torres has continued to make jaw-dropping plays at the shortstop position this season and holds a .966 fielding percentage this season.

Coming Up in the Clutch

  • When the pressure is on, freshman Isa Torres has come up big on multiple occasions for the Seminoles.
  • Last Wednesday with the Seminoles leading No. 12 Florida 3-2 in the fifth inning, Torres launched a three-run home run to center field to blow the game open.
  • Torres has hit two walk-offs in the bottom of the seventh this season to lead the Noles to victory.
  • Torres hit a two-run walk-off home run against NC State on Mar. 28 to put the Seminoles on top 8-6. Torres was the first true freshman to hit a walk-off home run since Jessi Warren in 2015 against Notre Dame.
  • Torres also hit a two-RBI walk-off single against Texas Tech on Feb. 9 to win the game for the Noles.

Flaherty Heating Up at the Plate

  • Remember Devyn Flaherty? Yes, she's back to her old self and has been leading the charge for the Noles at the plate in the past 23 games.
  • Flaherty has led the team with a .469 average in her last 23 games compared to just a .207 average in her first 27 games.
  • Against Boston College, she put the game away with a two-run home run to complete FSU's seventh inning comeback against the Eagles.
  • Flaherty is still as dangerous as ever on the base paths as she has 13 stolen bases on 15 attempts.
  • Last season, Flaherty stole 31 bases on 32 attempts which led the ACC.
  • Flaherty cracked the all-time top 10 list for most career stolen bases in school history. Flaherty has 97 career stolen bases which puts her eighth in school history.
  • Flaherty was one of four players in the NCAA in 2023 to steal 30 or more bases while only being caught once.

Reid Gaining Confidence in the Circle

  • As one of the top freshman pitchers in 2023, Makenna Reid has begun to find her groove in the circle in 2024 after a tough start.
  • Over the course of her career, Reid holds a 25-1 record for the Seminoles.
  • Reid has pitched the second-most innings for the Noles this season with 87.1 innings and leads the team with a 3.37 ERA.
  • In one of the best performances of her young career, Reid stifled one of the top offenses in Duke as she pitched a career high seven innings while allowing just three hits and not allowing a run.
  • In 2023, Reid was one of just three pitchers last season to not suffer a loss joining Alex Storako and Nicole May from Oklahoma.
  • Reid was one of just five players to post a sub 1.00 ERA last season.
  • Reid was the first Seminole since Sarah Hamilton in 2009 to finish with a sub 1.00 ERA.

Danley Coming Alive in the Circle

  • True freshman pitcher and outfielder Ashtyn Danley came to Tallahassee as one of the top recruits in the country and has begun to find her footing as a Seminole.
  • Danley has made a team-high 17 starts for the Seminoles this season and holds a 15-3 record.
  • In her last 17 appearances, Danley has allowed 16 earned runs while striking out 46 in 60 innings.
  • In ACC play, Danley holds a 2.51 ERA in 61.1 innings.
  • Against one of the top offenses in the country in Texas, Danley threw three scoreless innings while striking out three.

Kerr Continues Hot Streak

  • Redshirt junior Jahni Kerr is back for the Seminoles after a breakout season in 2023.
  • In 2024, Kerr is hitting .336 with 36 RBI in 42 games. Kerr missed seven games this season due to injury.
  • Against Pitt, Kerr hit three home runs in three games for the Noles.
  • As one of the top recruits in the country coming out of high school, Kerr struggled in her first two seasons as a Seminole as she dealt with the implications of COVID and was recovering from a knee injury that she suffered her freshman season.
  • The tide turned for Kerr in 2023, and it all started with a home run in a primetime ESPN slot against Alabama at the 2023 Clearwater Invitational. Kerr came into the game starting in just three out of the Seminoles nine games and was 2-for-10 at the plate.
  • Kerr led the team with a .356 batting average while adding eight home runs and 40 RBI in 2023.
  • Kerr earned First Team All-ACC honors for the first time in her career and was named to the Preseason All-ACC Team.

My Oh Amaya

  • Fans have known the name Amaya Ross for awhile but mainly for her insane speed on the base paths. Now, Ross has found herself in the FSU lineup for more than just her speed.
  • Ross has started all 50 games this season after making just 18 starts the past two seasons.
  • Ross has surpassed her hit, RBI and home run numbers this season from the last two seasons combined.
  • Ross had one of the best weeks of her career at the Dugout Club Classic.
  • In six games, Ross recorded 10 hits in 15 at-bats (.667) with six RBI and three triples.

  • Ross's six triples is ninth in the country.
  • Ross is 21st in the country and second in the ACC with 25 stolen bases this season.
  • Ross currently holds a .336 batting average with eight home runs which is fourth on the team.
  • Ross has stolen 52 bases in 56 attempts over the course of her career.

Golf FSU men to play in Stanford Regional

FSU sports information:

The Florida State Men’s Golf team earned a No. 1 seed at the NCAA Stanford Regional held at Stanford Golf Course in California, announced on Wednesday. NCAA Regional play gets underway May 13-15, with the Top 5 teams from each of the six regionals earning a spot at the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship.

The announcement was made during Wednesday’s NCAA Men’s Golf Championship selection show on the GOLF Channel. The Seminoles must finish in the Top 5 of its 14-team regional, which also includes Ole Miss (2), Illinois (3), Texas A&M (4), Stanford (5), UCLA (6), SMU (7), Missouri (8), Fresno State (9), UNLV (10), Augusta (11), Liberty (12), Sacramento State (13) and Siena (14).

This year’s NCAA Men’s Golf Championship is held at a new site at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa located in Carlsbad, Calif.

The Seminoles continue their impressive run of making 18 consecutive NCAA Regionals. FSU has made three consecutive trips to the NCAA Finals (Top 30), including reaching the match play semifinals last season and the match play quarterfinals in 2021.

A Seminole has won each of the last four stroke-play tournaments heading into NCAA Regionals. Sophomore Luke Clanton won three straight tournaments at the Seminole Intercollegiate (March 12), the Valspar Collegiate Invitational (March 26) and the Lewis Chitengwa Memorial (April 9). Senior Frederik Kjettrup was named co-champion of the ACC Championship on April 21.

FSU went to the Morgan Hill Regional last year near San Jose, which was won by Clanton.

The combination of Clanton and Kjettrup has formed one of collegiate golf’s best duos in the country, with Clanton holding a 69.30 stroke-play average and Kjettrup at 70.56. Clanton is ranked No. 2 nationally while Kjettrup is 37th.

Senior Gray Albright has come up big this year, sitting third on the team with a 71.22 stroke average and earning a victory at the Watersound Invitational.

Cole Anderson, Brett Roberts and Tyler Weaver help round out a strong and potent FSU lineup. FSU won the Jackson Stephens Cup back in the fall with a 3-2 victory over Arizona in match play. FSU also owns match-play wins this year over Florida (3-2) and Georgia Tech (3-0).

The Seminoles won the Valspar Collegiate Invitational for the time in program history, shooting 19-under while Clanton earned the player title and received an invitation to the 2025 Valspar Championship on the PGA TOUR.

FSU tennis to play in Athens Regional

FSU sports information:

The No. 20 Florida State women’s tennis team (16-8, 9-4 ACC) travels to Athens, Georgia, to face UNC Asheville (16-3, 5-0 Big South) in the NCAA Tournament on Friday.

Florida State finished the regular season with a 16-8 record and reached the semifinals of the ACC tournament.

Graduate Senior Vic Allen has been dominant this season, as she has earned 14 victories in both singles and doubles. Allen is ranked 21st in the singles and 19th in the doubles with sophomore Millie Bissett. Bissett also enters this weekend with 13 singles victories.

Golf Luke Clanton named ACC Golfer of the Month

FSU sports information:

For the second straight month, Florida State sophomore Luke Clanton has earned ACC Golfer of the Month honors for his tremendous play in April.

The Hialeah, Fla., native played in two tournaments last month, winning the Lewis Chitengwa Memorial against an elite field, then securing a fifth-place finish in the stroke-play portion of the ACC Championship. At the Lewis Chitengwa Memorial, Clanton earned his third consecutive victory – becoming the first Seminole ever to accomplish that feat.

Clanton shot a 15-under (68-66-64) in winning his third straight tournament in Charlottesville, then followed with a 5-under at Charlotte Country Club (69-67-72) in helping the Seminoles reach the finals of match play vs. North Carolina.

For the month, Clanton shot in the 60s in five of his six stroke-play rounds. He is currently the second-ranked golfer in the nation according to the Clippd rankings used by the NCAA, and has a year-long stroke average of 69.30 which would break the lowest single-season mark in program history.

In the spring, Clanton has been honored with several awards: Besides being named ACC Golfer of the Month twice, he was named to the 2024 Arnold Palmer Cup, selected as a Ben Hogan Award Semifinalist and was honored as the SwingU Golfer of the Month.

Clanton is the sixth Seminole to win three times in a season, joining FSU legends John Pak (2018-19), Brooks Koepka (2011-12), Christian Raynor (1994-95), Bobby Cochran (1993-94) and Nolan Henke (1986-87).

2023-24 ACC Men’s Golfer of the Month

September 2023 – Sebastian Moss, Louisville

October 2023 – David Ford, North Carolina

February 2024 – Bryan Lee, Virginia

March 2024 – Luke Clanton, Florida State

April 2024 – Luke Clanton, Florida State

Softball Jaysoni Beachum a top 25 finalist for USA Softball National Player of the Year

FSU sports information:

Florida State softball's star freshman Jaysoni Beachum earned more national recognition on Wednesday afternoon as she was named a Top 25 Finalist for the 2024 USA Softball National Player of the Year. Beachum is the first true freshman in Florida State history to be named a Top 25 Finalist for the award and is the only freshman on the list this year. Beachum was also named Softball America's Freshman of the Month for the third consecutive month on Wednesday morning.

Beachum is in the midst of one of the greatest freshman seasons in school history. Beachum is hitting a blazing .447 with 14 home runs and 59 RBI including seven home runs in her last 10 games. Beachum has already broken the freshman RBI record and is on pace to break nearly every freshman hitting record at Florida State. Beachum is also nearing the overall RBI record for a single season at Florida State which is held by Maddie O'Brien who drove in 83 runs in 2014. Beachum is also in line to finish with the highest batting average in school history which is currently held by Danielle Cox who hit .432 in 1999. This season, Beachum ranks in the Top 20 nationally in batting average, hits, RBI, on base percentage and total bases.

Beachum has also been outstanding in the field and is continuing FSU's long legacy of stellar third base play. Beachum has made 49 starts at the hot corner and has just five errors on 135 attempts for a .967 fielding percentage.

Beachum will look to become FSU's third National Player of the Year and the first FSU hitter to win the award. Jessic van der Linden won the award in 2004 and Lacey Waldrop won the award in 2014.

Beachum and the Seminoles will play host to No. 9 Florida tonight on the ACC Network.

Tennis FSU men's tennis hosts regional for first time since 2018

FSU sports information:

The No. 9 Florida State men’s tennis team will host the first two rounds of the NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Championship held from May 3-4 at the Scott Speicher Memorial Tennis Center. The Seminoles qualified as the No. 10 seed and will host in the postseason for the first time since 2018.

The Tallahassee regional will include Florida State, Florida, UCF and North Florida beginning on Friday. No. 25 Florida and No. 36 UCF will play at 1 p.m., while Florida State will face No. 70 North Florida at 4 p.m. Winners of the Friday matches meet on Saturday at 4 p.m. to advance to the super regionals. FSU swept Florida 4-0 earlier in the season, defeated UCF in 2019 in their lone postseason matchup, and holds a 13-match winning streak over North Florida.

This marks the fifth time in program history that FSU will host a regional. 2024 ACC Coach of the Year Dwayne Hultquist has led the Seminoles to their 20th appearance in the last 21 tournaments. Last season, FSU swept Baylor in the first round to record a fifth-straight second round appearance when qualifying for the championship.

The Seminoles claimed their first-ever ACC Championship this season with four victories in four days, defeating No. 65 Virginia Tech, No. 11 NC State, No. 7 Wake Forest, and No. 2 Virginia to become the lowest seed to win the championship. FSU finished the regular season 21-7 with 15 victories away from home and 10 wins against ranked opponents.

Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc is coming off one of the best comebacks in collegiate tennis, winning five straight games down 5-2 in the third set to win the ACC Championship and knock off No. 2 Virginia. He was named the 2024 ACC Player of the Year, earned his second straight All-ACC Singles First Team honor, and claimed the No. 3 seed in the 2024 NCAA Singles Championship.

Cornut-Chauvinc and Joshua Dous-Karpenschif were named to the All-ACC Doubles Second Team and qualified for the 2024 NCAA Doubles Championship for a second straight season. Jamie Connel was named to the All-ACC Third Team off a 20-win season and won all four of his matches at the ACC Championship.

Tickets and match day information is available under the Regional Central tab on Seminoles.com. Live stats and video from the championship will also be available on Seminoles.com

Sports Business Power 4 schools exploring athlete revenue-sharing settlement

Like the Washington Generals on the court, NCAA lawyers have been winless in the courtroom.

And it doesn't look like there is a win in sight as House vs. the NCAA, the most-recent anti-trust lawsuit seeking revenue sharing for student-athletes, is steaming through the judicial system. Meanwhile, efforts to carve out an "amateur niche" for collegiate athletics has born no fruit on Capital Hill. As a result, college administrators from league offices and schools have been in negotiations for months in an attempt to reach agreement to settle the lawsuit, according to a report by Yahoo and by ESPN in the last few days. Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger described the negotiations as “heating up” but cautioned that it’s uncertain an agreement is imminent.

Yahoo, which is the parent company of Rivals, outlined the settlement in two aspects, from compensation to athletes for NIL within broadcasts, to future compensation for revenue sharing with athletes.

Track and Field DeFrand earns ACC performer of the week

FSU sports information:

Florida State women’s track and field student-athlete Dajaz DeFrand was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Performer of the Week on Tuesday afternoon.

DeFrand won the women’s 100-meter, clocking a lifetime best of 10.88 at the LSU Invitational in Baton Rouge, La. Her time ranks first in the ACC and third nationally. DeFrand was also the second leg of the 4x100 relay team that placed fourth with the 10th fastest time in school history at 43.43. She concluded her weekend placing third in the 200 with a lifetime best and fourth-fastest time in school history at 22.58.

"Breakthrough performance for Dajaz,” said associate head coach Matt Kane. “She has been very consistent at her personal best in both the 100 and 200 this season so we felt like a big performance was about to happen. I’m excited for that positive momentum as we head into the postseason.”

Golf PGSF FedEx Cup Week 17: The Zurich Classic

rbc.png

Written by Adam Stanley@Adam_Stanley
It’s time to team up.
The Zurich Classic of New Orleans is the lone two-man team event on the PGA TOUR schedule and boasts plenty of the game’s best, with five of the top 15 players in the Official World Golf Ranking heading to TPC Louisiana.
This is the seventh year the tournament has been played as a team event, with each duo playing Four-ball (also known as best ball) in the first and third rounds, and Foursomes (alternate shot) for the second and fourth rounds.

With Presidents Cup pairs, Ryder Cup heroes, twins, fan favorites, college teammates, and more joining forces in NOLA it should be a special week.
This week marks the second of three events to earn points towards the Aon Swing 5 and Aon Next 10 as we inch closer to the next Signature Event on the PGA TOUR schedule – the Wells Fargo Championship in two weeks.
Here’s everything you need to know as the TOUR returns to New Orleans.
FIELD NOTES: Rory McIlroy will make his tournament debut alongside good pal, Ryder Cup teammate, and Irishman Shane Lowry – a duo that was firmed up during a celebratory lunch after the Ryder Cup last fall… Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele will try to reprise their 2022 win here. Cantlay and Schauffele have both the Foursomes and Four-ball scoring records at this event… Davis Riley and Nick Hardy will defend their 2023 title. No team has gone back-to-back… Three sets of brothers (and two sets of twins!) will play together with twins Rasmus and Nicolai Højgaard and Parker and Pierceson Coody in the field along with Alex and Matt Fitzpatrick. Alex Fitzpatrick and Rasmus Højgaard are sponsor invites… Billy Horschel, who won last week at the Corales Puntacana Championship, will be without his previous partner Sam Burns, as Burns and his wife are expecting their first child any day. Horschel will instead be paired with fellow University of Florida alum Tyson Alexander. Horschel has won the Zurich Classic when it was both an individual and team event… Other notable pairings include Collin Morikawa and Kurt Kitayama, Sahith Theegala and Will Zalatoris, and Nick Taylor and Adam Hadwin. The Canadian duo finished runner-up a year ago and would like nothing more than to show Presidents Cup International Team captain Mike Weir how well they play together… Steve Stricker will play his second TOUR event this season (after earning his way into THE PLAYERS Championship), teaming up with Matt Kuchar. Stricker has four top-10s in five events on PGA TOUR Champions this season… Other sponsor exemptions include the South African pairing of Aldrich Potgieter and Thriston Lawrence. Potgieter, the winner of The Amateur Championship last year (the second youngest winner in the tournament’s history) won The Bahamas Great Abaco Classic on the Korn Ferry Tour earlier this season – the youngest winner in Korn Ferry Tour history. Lawrence, who has two runner-up finishes on the DP World Tour this season, made his 2024 TOUR debut last week at Corales (MC)… Jason Dufner and Kevin Chappell, Kevin Tway and Kelly Kraft, and Brandon Wu and James Nicholas are the other sponsor invites.

Austin Eckroat remained at No. 9 while Peter Malnati moved to No. 10. He leads No. 11 – Thomas Detry – by just 73 points… Ludvig Åberg remains on top of the Aon Next 10 followed by Matthieu Pavon. Zalatoris, Stephan Jaeger and Akshay Bhatia round out the rest of the Aon Next 10.
COMCAST BUSINESS TOUR TOP 10 UPDATES: With his fourth win in his last five TOUR starts, a three-shot triumph at the RBC Heritage, Scottie Scheffler remained atop the standings. Scheffler was the first player ranked No. 1 in the Comcast Business TOUR TOP 10 to win the RBC Heritage and now leads by 2,023 points – the largest lead with 15 weeks left in the Regular season (since 2009)… Thanks to his solo second at the RBC Heritage, Theegala moved up to No. 4 in the Comcast Business TOUR TOP 10. Cantlay finished T3 at Harbour Town and rose 13 spots from No. 23 to No. 10 in the standings. Cantlay was the only new entrant into the TOUR TOP 10 after last week… Chris Kirk and Byeong Hun An are the only two to remain in the TOUR TOP 10 every week so far this season.
FEDEXCUP: Winner receives 400 FedExCup points.
COURSE: TPC Louisiana, par 72, 7,425 yards. Located just 15 minutes from downtown New Orleans, the course features plenty of water even as the Pete Dye design (Steve Elkington/Kelly Gibson as consultants) is one of the TOUR’s most scoreable layouts. It stretches over 250 acres of wetlands and features 100 bunkers.
72-HOLE RECORD: 258, Hardy/Riley (2023)
FOURSOMES (ALTERNATE SHOT) RECORD: 63, Hadwin/Taylor (4th round, 2023), Cantlay/Schauffele (Round 2, 2023)
FOUR-BALL (BEST BALL) RECORD: 59, Cantlay/Schauffele (1st round, 2022).
LAST TIME: Riley and Hardy each won for the first time on the PGA TOUR. They birdied four of their final six holes – highlighted by Riley’s 30-foot birdie bomb on 17 – to win by two over Hadwin and Taylor. Riley and Hardy started the final round three shots back but fired a 7-under 65 in Foursomes to end the week with a new tournament scoring record of 30-under 258. Taylor and Hadwin, who grew up playing the same course near Vancouver, tied the Foursomes record of 9-under 63 (set earlier in the week by Cantlay and Schauffele) to zip into second alone. Wyndham Clark and Beau Hossler, the 54-hole leaders, finished third, while Schauffele and Cantlay tied for fourth with Matthew NeSmith and Taylor Moore.
