WR Atrophy

Wake up!!!

Guys! We won for a change! How ‘bout them oranges?! Orange men… I’ll stick to my day job…

Here’s a comment I’d like you to consider. Corey has made a good argument for Jordan Travis citing statistics and all that jazz. But I have a deeper concern. If we keep playing Travis, the skills of the wideouts will continue to atrophy. Parchment just started to get it going with KZ in the game against Louisville and then barely got involved against the ‘Cuse. With JT it’s just running backs, JT, and the occasional TE. Wouldn’t it be better to keep KZ out there to get the rest of the offensive skills guys better so that when Chubba or the next flashy recruit gets in there, the team is ready to be successful?

Also what’s worse losing to Jax State or having your first-year head coach go visit his “grand kids” for an evening?

You guys are great at what you do! Corey, you’re champagne celebration was the highlight of my week! Keep on keeping on, brothers!

UK fined for storming field after UF win

I wonder what the fine is at Doak? I also wonder why I am comparing to UK. Unfortunately that's where we are right now, but much lower.

Thinking about next year

I want to try to understand how next year looks roster wise because I think you have to start integrating the young guys and getting them some experience. Also, thinking about where recruiting fits in.

Also, I’m just trying to wrap my mind around the rebuild and likely projections. After doing this, I’m not sure we are going to be much better next year. We lose so much on the offensive and defensive lines and there’s question marks all over the roster. The DBs are encouraging if you can hold onto Hunter, project improvement from Jay and Williams, slide Brownlee to nickel, … that’s good but it will be a tough year without a pass rush.

Anyway, would love any comments. I’m doing this mostly to wrap my own mind around things and I’m not sure we will be going to be anywhere close to “good” until 2023 at the earliest and that’s assuming great recruiting this year.

For the rest of the season, It seems like playing McClain is essential because he really is better than any other receiver we have, but there is also an argument to play Robinson and Williamson more, right? Even if you don’t think they’re as good as Helton or Wilson that’s likely to be a battle going into the offseason and you would want to get some non-practice data to help make your decision.

QB: Battle Travis v. Purdy v. Duffy
RB: Corbin and Ward
WR: McClain
WR: Battle Robinson v. Williamson
Slot: Helton
TE: McDonald

Question: what is happening with Destyn Hill? Is Coleman good enough to start immediately if he commits? I don’t like the idea of using Hunter too much at receiver though I’m sure we will play him there some. If we don’t get better at receiver though it could get ugly as teams will just play man.

LT - Washington
LG - Shrader
C - Smith
RG - Herring
RT - Scott

Question: how close is Lloyd Willis? This line would be so much better if we could feel comfortable sliding Washington inside. How is Ira Henry looking? Is Bryson Estes developing well? Rod Orr?

This line is scarily thin again next year unless we believe the recruits we're bringing in are good enough to immediately contribute. Or we have to try to go to the portal but that seems tough for OLine. The guys that are obvious and everyone wants don’t come here so we are left with guys that might make us better but where there’s some doubt.

DE: Fuller v. McLendon
DT: Lovett
DT: Briggs
DE: TJ Davis

The reason our defense doesn’t look significantly worse than it does is because Johnson has been a force on the edge and Thomas has been pretty good too. We are desperately in need of Fuller, McClendon, and Davis developing as well as guys like Payton. Does Marvin Jones Jr. start at defensive end by the time the 2022 season ends if he signs here?

LB: DeLoach
LB: Gainer
LB: Lundy

I have been encouraged by how well DeLoach is playing. Lundy seems like he makes a lot of mistakes but if they’re playing him now it must mean there’s a belief that he is better and the experience should only help him.

CB: Hunter
CB: Jay
SS: Battle Gant v. Brown
FS: Williams

I would feel much better about Brownlee being a nickel corner. Williams plays with an edge. Love watching that guy play. I hope Brown can take the SS position. Would McCall be able to play safety early?

Memory Lane- Chapel Hill

One of my favorite road trips came my junior year in 1997. I went to Keenan Stadium with a friend that I ended up marrying three years later. UNC was #5 and undefeated. We drove that 1990 Pathfinder decorated to the hilt in Garnet and Gold and smothered the Heels 20-3. They were devastated. We decided to drive to the Dean Dome just to see it while we were there. We pulled right in front of the entrance in that decorated Pathfinder. They were having their Blue and White basketball game and it ended right as we pulled up. We couldn't leave quickly because of the gridlock traffic and it was like pouring a five-pound bag of salt into their wound. People spit at us and yelled everything you could imagine. Here is to going up there and knocking off those Heels again this weekend!

FSU receivers face pressing challenge this week vs. UNC

It's fair to say the Florida State WRs haven't exactly been playmakers and game-changers so far in 2021.
Well, they'll get a chance to change that on Saturday.
The Seminoles know they'll be looking at a whole lot of press man-to-man coverage when they face off with the UNC secondary.
The question is: Can they finally start winning those one-on-one matchups?

"Renegade Express": North Carolina Week

zx4OZlIl.jpg

The wind at our back and a week of rest on the horizon...just gotta get past a 17 point favorite on the road. Who basked in Saturday's victory, who shrugged and went about their day? Was the return of improvised, elusive, chunk runs by Jordan hope for continued brighter days? It shouldn't be this hard to return a kickoff beyond the 25, right? In any event, post your questions and takes below and we'll do an entire show(s?) dedicated to your content!

Many at UM will Target Lane Kiffin

Supposedly Luther Campbell and Warren Sapp (both are broke), are extremely concerned about Mike Norvell and the fact our class is light years ahead of theirs. They are trying to lead a group of former players to raise funds to buy Diaz out then lure Lane Kiffin from ole miss to UM. They know Norvell is the real deal. Been saying, with out King UM is a 2-3 win team in Diaz's 3rd year.

Word is they won't be able to offer what Oregon will for Cristobal. Also several of their key players on offense supposedly want nothing else to do with Diaz and the coaching staff. Expect them to quit on these season and many are just playing for stats and draft status.

Tuesday football practice updates — Noon (w/ video interviews)

10:55 — About to do interviews.

Not a ton to report from the last session. Milton and Toafili connected on one really nice throw and catch. But then a couple plays later, Brownlee almost picked Milton off.

Chubba also had a nice throw to Williamson for a nice completion. Again, this was a really good practice from Williamson. Will have more after interviews.

10:10 — Just had a spirited session of 1-on-1s … the highlight was a good battle between Helton and Jammie Robinson, who always go against each other.

First Helton beat Robinson for a deep TD. There was good coverage but a great catch. Then next time, Helton ran a shorter route and Robinson broke on the ball and picked it off. Norvell went crazy … grabbed Robinson in a bear hug and lifted him in the air.

Some other highlights … Parker Self beat Knowles for a deep ball. I really like Self. Not sure why they can’t find a role for him in this wr corps.

Pokey caught a nice back shoulder pass on J. Jones.
Gant had an INT
McLellion had a great rep to shut down Helton
Pokey caught a comeback pass on Brownlee
Williamson beat Jay for a catch. Williamson has had a nice day.

9:45 — Most of this portion has been working against the scout teams. Then they broke into some position drills.

Dillingham got on the WRs about “attacking the ball” and not waiting for it to come to them. Williamson did a good job of that on the next route.

Did another series of 11-on-11
Milton missed a throw to McClain. Then Toafili broke off another nice run … but Jermaine Johnson ran from behind and stripped the ball to force a fumble. Jarrian Jones recovered. The coaches were EXTREMELY fired up for Jermaine’s play. They are really focused on creating some turnovers.

Only one real play that stood out on Purdy’s drive. He saw a blitz coming and passed to where it came from and got a completion. Coaches seemed happy with him. But the drive didn’t really go anywhere.

9:15 — Looks like they’re gonna practice inside today.

In the early 2-minute drive, Milton went first.

First pass was on target but Pokey Wilson didn’t make the catch. Looked like he should have had it.
Toafili had a couple of runs, including one that went for about 10. Gainer stopped him short on the other.
Then Milton’s last pass should have been picked by Brownlee. Looked like Milton and McClain had a miscommunication on the route.
Ryan Fitzgerald ended the drive by hitting a 42 field goal.

Purdy took a few snaps for the second drive. On the first play, he hit Darion Williamson for a completion of about 35 yards. Looked like Williamson best Jay on the play. Treshaun Ward then had a couple of short runs.

After the last play, Darius Washington got very physical with a defender and drove him way downfield. Norvell was fired up about it and gave him a lot of praise and a high-five.

Will have more coming.
