And I don't know how well O'Leary would've fit in a uptempo offense.

Probably not great. I just wanted to post the clip.

Could be Harlan is our new DC.
Looks good to me.....

Barnett, 51, was an All-American defensive back at Michigan State (1986-89) and played seven seasons in the NFL before beginning his coaching career.

A stout defense was key in the rebound as the Spartans rank No. 7 in the nation in total defense at 297.6 yards per game allowed. In an interview with Big Ten Network analyst Howard Griffith, Barnett called MSU’s defense a “nine-man front.” The corners are on islands playing a lot of press-man coverage. This philosophy leaves you susceptible to the big play, but it’s about putting pressure on the opposing quarterback. Barnett runs a simple, aggressive and fun style of defense; it fits the “lethal simplicity” model that Taggart is looking for.

Michigan State went from having one of the most average defenses in the country in 2016 to one of the best in 2017. The “No Fly Zone” made a comeback in 2017 and so did the run-stopping ability. Michigan State’s secondary ranked 31st in the country in terms of yards allowed per game but it improved drastically from 2016 and the run defense currently ranks second and could be No. 1 after the national title game, depending on how well Alabama stops Georgia’s attack.

A&M is going to shell out 1.8 million for Elko from ND.

Honestly that’s what we should have done. I’m not incredibly excited about any of the 6+ names in contention for our DC.

I think Harlan Barnett is a good get. Played for Saban at MSU and was a GA for him at LSU but also learned under Dantonio and Narduzzi. Also played 7 years in the NFL and utilizes press man

*Please don't quote a tweet from an opposing site. Thanks.

So I guess Harlon Barnett is a done deal.

And don’t get me wrong, I don’t think he’s terrible but after chasing Leavitt, Elko and more it’s definitely underwhelming. If I thought he really had complete control of Sparty’s D I would be more excited. But he just like TRob was looking for a real promotion from quasiDC to real DC and I was hoping FSU wouldn’t need to promote someone but bring in a quality person already in the position.

I don't care who the DC is as long as they play an aggressive scheme instead of bend-but-don't-break at crunch time. I'd also like to see better play from the LB's in pass defense, in blitzing and in coverage. Finally, I hope the new DC doesn't make the scheme so difficult that our guys get confused. Except for a couple of teams, our guys have enough talent to win on talent if allowed to just play without having to think too much.

We also apparently signed our new DB and special teams coach who is NOT Deion or TBuck. It’s Alonzo the guy who’s followed Taggart everywhere.

I'm excited. Jimbo, good riddance!

I went up to the BC game. I don't want to experience that type of game again. I feel hopeful, regardless of who starts at QB.

I like the way this staff is coming together. That said, in light of what happened with BB and JF, I hope it has been made clear to WT by the powers that be that if his assistants aren't getting the job done in the future, he'll have to replace them or be held directly accountable himself.

Avg. S&P+ ranking for Michigan State's defense the past three seasons is nearly identical to FSU's (19th nationally), but Spartans produced similar results with far less raw talent. Ex: FSU had 26 former blue-chip prospects on its defense this season. Michigan State had 8.

A lot of consternation on the TC about the staff assembled to this point. The racial make up and lack of experience at the position for which they were hired are major hang ups for some posters.

Who cares about the race thing...I don't care if they're all from Beefeeistan as long as we win. Their other concern is reasonable, however.

Cant speak to the TC convos, but I have noticed how not white the staff is compared to FSUs previous and the global staffing population. But hey, its his staff, he knows more about football and his crew that I, so let it ride and see. I can't imagine he is trying to give all black coaches a job, I think he is just hiring the people he is closest to, and it makes sense it would be more black than Jimbo's circles....

FIFY. :D

The coaches seem for the most part very experienced and qualified. Little worried about the Oregon S&C coach and the mishap they had with three kids in the hospital.

I would argue in a sport that came to be dominated by African-American players starting in the early 70s, it should not be shocking that a football coaching staff in 2018 would reflect this. Actually, what is shocking is no other big college football program or NFL staff is already skewed in the same way. It is pretty groundbreaking and I am proud to be a Nole.

The point was made that the FAMU staff is whiter than FSU's. I don't know if that's true but if it is, I find that surprising.

I would expect this to be a difference maker as to where some kids commit. Shoot, my junior high at R Frank Nims on Orange Avenue was traditionally black kids and when I attended was breaking thru the integration model at approx. 55 % black and 45 % mostly white. On the playground, there was serious talent in all sports. Future Olympian Ron Gallimore was one year earlier... We mixed it up big time. One kid broke my nose since his team could not stop my rush playing “flag football”... Those kids went to a mix of Rickards and Godby High and were the genesis of Godby’s first state title in ‘76. We went toe to toe on the playground and, as Mr. Floyd would say, there were no holds barred. No love asked for, none given. We went all out even on the PE playground. Most of those kids even back then needed a father figure in their lives. This was prior to the devastation of the drug onslaught, but still relevant.
If these kids knew one thing, it was sincerity and love offered by someone telling it like it is...no BS as their lives had enough of that.
I would suggest that a man like WT and his staff can fill that role for many kids. OK, great. Now, produce. Do it. Go Noles!

Agree but he's going to make a lot of money playing on Sundays. It's getting more difficult for the new staff.
I will miss watching big Auden, but wish him well in the days ahead. He was stout and productive in his time on the field. Go Noles!
