ANOTHER New Footie Thread

That's my biggest concern/fear. I really hope he doesn't go too crazy trying to buy galactico sand buried Rashford and/or Martial. I can't see Martial not starting and I truly hope Rashford gets plenty of time too. I've also really enjoyed seeing Lingard, Fosu Mensah, and Borthwick-Jackson develop this year. We could definitely do with an upgrade at midfield and center back though and another striker so Rashford isn't solely depended on. It sounds like Mou wants to bring in Zlatan... oh boy.

Hope you enjoy dull, defensive football with the bus parked at the opening kickoff. That's the Jose way. Just like at Chelsea, he'll burn his bridges in a couple of years and move on to the next sucker.

Seriously, Mata has got to be wondering why his luck is so shit. I think him and Fellaini will be the first ones out the door.

When it was first rumoured that he would go to United (back in Dec/Jan i.e. right after being done with Chelsea) it was said that those were the 2 players he wanted to move if he took over United right then.

Liverpool...

"Liverpool have also been ordered to contact United within 30 days for the settlement of damages caused by supporters.

Liverpool still have disciplinary charges outstanding in relation to setting off fireworks in their quarterfinal against Borussia Dortmund and more fireworks offences and crowd disturbances relating to last week's Europa League final against Sevilla."

Did anyone see the fighting before the Europa Cup Final?

Liverpool...the Thug U of English football.

Well, Liverpool supporters are probably happy that they signed a new #1 on Tuesday in Loris Karius.

Plenty of rumours making the rounds. Will be interesting to see how quick the transfer market starts with the Euros starting in mid-June. I remember in 2014 the market seemed slower than normal at the beginning b/c of the World Cup (ironic in that Chelsea had all their business taken care of prior to the start of the WC essentially).

EDIT: I have a huge love/hate relationship with the silly season. I love hearing about potential moves, but hate the ridiculous ones. eg. Thomas Muller moving to United in last year's summer transfer period. Did that make sense to anyone? It might've made sense if his role was reduced, but he was pretty much a bang on starter regardless of the formation that Pep decided to trot out there.

Arsenal sign Granit Xhaka...arguably the coolest name in all of this year's transfer window.

If I'm Coquelin and El-Neny, this move doesn't delight me, but it does appear to cover some of the ground lost by the departures of Rosicky, Arteta, and Flamini. I confess that I've never seen a Borussia Monchengladbach match, so I have no idea if he's worth the ~$45 mil we just dropped on him...but I hope so.

Now dammit, let's get out there and sign a Center Forward!

I am looking forward to Xhaka being in the squad. With Euros this summer he may not be 100% ready to go at the start of the season. Then later in the season Arsenal will be missing El-Neny because of the African Cup of Nations. So, adding him to the mix will be a good thing. I also like that he considers himself aggressive & a leader. A quote from his introduction press conference..."I don't think it is the same style as the Bundesliga. In Germany you can play aggressively but the referee will always blow his whistle, but in England that's not the case. That's better for me."

Hopefully he adds some toughness to Arsenal.

Now as Les states, go sign a Center Forward!

I agree w/the comment on Giovinco. Seems crazy to leave him off. It's not like they're starting a Totti or Luca Toni (in their primes) up front.

Anyone watching USA vs Ecuador?

Yep. Not a coincidence that the younger group comes in the 2nd half, and suddenly the USA looks like world beaters. We need to ditch the old dudes on the team and go young through this tournament and the rest of WC Qualifying, get them some real international experience prior to 2018.

I'm guessing you've seen him play for the Swiss National team though (yes?) Decent CM/DM type, but not Granite (yes I did!) in the middle of the park. No one's going to confuse him for Claude Makelele.

Funniest news of the day:

Chelsea owns the trademark to the name Jose Mourinho. MUFC won't be able to use it in many marketing campaigns (potentially) costing them 10s of millions of dollars.

Transition is the word and the younger players need to step up their confidence. Nagbe is a good example because once he attacked with the ball then good things started to happen. Beckerman and Jones are too old and Bradley is now just a DCM.

...which is where Bradley should be anyways. Unfortunately, you know we're going to roll out Beckerman/Jones against Colombia to start Copa. With the emergence of Wood and Morris, I really think we've seen the last of Altidore as the main striker for the USA if/when he ever gets back from injury. My biggest concern of the youth movement is Yedlin, as he still gets caught up-field wayyyyyy too much.

Zidane got it all wrong today but real wins the awful side of football.

His super defensive lineup vs atleti made mo sense with Casemiro and Kroos giving zero service to cr7. Theres a reason they dont plsy together. The early goal made him think he could then go all defensive and hold the lead for 75 minuted which is not Real! Ever!

Glad they won but Zidane leaves me wondering if the last 4 months were a fluke. Just awful tactics today leaving attackers isolated. No idea what to think, feels like a tie not a winthey looked so unReal.
Feel bad gor atleti

I was truly conflicted today. I loved Zidane has a player; he may be my all-time favorite. And I detest Ronaldo and his pretty boy image. Have to say the center did Atleti no favors today, but that douche is one of the worst since Howard Webb.

I personally don't believe that any former player can just step in and be a manager. He's kind of gone the route Steve Kerr has the in NBA by being a front office guy for many years and then go into coaching so let's see.

Well, Zidane was in Ancelotti's staff, and he coached Real's B team before being Real's manager. But, yes, not much experience.

Anyone playing in, or know of, any good Fantasy Pick 'Em games for either Euro '16 or Copa America? I recall participating in a pretty good one for the World Cup in '14, but I have no idea where it was...Yahoo, Fox, ESPN, etc.

I don't. I know UEFA.com has an official Euro fantasy game done in the same format as Fantasy Premier League. I am not doing that one as my wife demands I spend at least a couple of months not staring at a screen of t-shirts.

Jermaine Jones defied his age tonight. His goal, after falling to get the ball out, was simply sublime.

No he didn't, he's still too old. He can pass and still has skill but he's lost a lot of lateral quickness and pace in the last 2 years. Costa Rica is a bad team; all our defenders would allow them to be open in the final third but use our speed to out run them when they took a dribble. We just have much better players then them. We can't play as sloppy tonight against Brazil or Ecuador in the next round.

I don't see a specific thread for Euro 2016, so I'll post my little rant here: The French fans are a bunch of a-holes! I'm watching this match against Albania, and every time these scrappy underdogs get the ball, the crowd is booing and hissing their little French heads off. You know what? The Albanians come from a tiny poor (by European standards) country with little football tradition, but they're playing disciplined soccer and their asses off. It's great to cheer your own team, but the French supporters come off as a bunch of gators. (I've seen this same behavior by the French fans when my Chelsea side has played in Paris during Champions league games the last 3 years...No class whatsoever.)

Maybe I'm just naive. I'm used to watching the EPL where teams' supporters are generally in good spirits at matches and singing instead of acting like Justin Bieber is out there on stage. France is supposed to be a sophisticated country, but their fans' behavior is making Monty Python and the Holy Grail look like a documentary.

Ahhh....the French. Good for 3 things only: hairy-legged women, smelly women and losing wars.

Still, no fanbase is as irksome as the Mexicans. They make the French seem charitable.

Yeah...Nothing like flinging homophobic slurs at the opposing goalkeep. Nice tradition there.

English fans continuing to fight and get arrested. They're an embarrassment to the world.

Wonder how much hooliganism we'll see before and after the Wales match.

I'd be willing to bet that a significant majority of these idiots aren't even true football fans. They just find a big event to hang around and cause trouble in an attempt to compensate for their...shortcomings.

There might be a few more fights after that Joe Hart effort...

Yeah, with all the talk about whether Vardy and Sturridge will start the next match over Sterling and Kane, I think Hart's name should be added to those whose place should be in question.

Well, my friends, that is what is know in the parlance as "An Alabama Ass-Whuppin'" (with apologies to Drive-By Truckers). Never thought I'd see the Mexican team simply quit, but loved every second of it. And their wonderful, fanatic fan base leaving when they got to 4 down; almost as much fun as watching the Gators lose.

Chile seriously looked like they could take anybody apart tonight; their probable matchup with Argentina for the title should be a dandy.

And when is Les going to give us his first person impression of the England/Wales match?
