Braves 2021

this bullpen is just miserable...smith has already given up four hits and two runs in the ninth

REALLY missing Melancon.

Bruce Sutter is 68 years old now. Since the Braves are probably still paying him maybe he can get a few outs for them :). EDIT: If the below estimate is correct he completes his contract this year!

Sutter joined the Atlanta Braves in December 1984 as a free agent. The New York Times reported that Sutter's six-year contract paid him $4.8 million and placed another $4.8 million into a deferred payment account at 13 percent interest. The newspaper estimated that the account would pay Sutter $1.3 million per year for 30 years after the initial six seasons of the contract. - Sutter's wiki page

I hate this bullpen and despise this front office.

starting to seriously worry this doesn’t get turned around.

Yep! For all the good moves he made building the team for last year's run, this one was a complete boneheaded move.
Antropolus didn't build last years team, the main nucleus was built by John Coppolella.

Albies, Acuna, Riley, Swanson, Soroka, Fried, Minter, Touki, Bryse Wilson were all Coppy guys.

He did improve the bullpen in 2018 by getting Greene, Melancon and Martin at the deadline and he did sign Duval, D'arnaud and Ozuna. But if he was gifted a great nucleus of young talent.

He also signed Cole Hamels and decided that the combo of Morton and Smyly was good enough to compete this year.

You are correct! My bad.

Coppolella also let Kimbrel go, which was a boneheaded decision as well.

Hate losing, but coming back like that was awesome. Huge series with the Mets starting tomorrow!

Ynoa breaks his hand punching the bench in frustration... out for two months ... incredible

Who is ready for the Braves 2022 thread? I am beginning to think 2021 is the season to forget.

Who would have guessed that Riley would lead the regular starters in BA at .292? Acuna is now hitting .291, and Freeman, Ozuna and Swanson hitting .218 or less ... Playing in just fifteen games, Heredia is a pleasant surprise at .298.

Fifth consecutive home loss. Acuna just doesn’t look like himself... Dansby swing-and-miss Swanson has been dreadful at the plate ... 15 total strikeouts tonight .... a very average team .... Tucker Davidson looked pretty good for his first start.

Much like the season the game had some good moments smothered by a lot of bad. This team simply has to out score anyone they play and I don't trust the BP to cover more than a couple of innings.

Davidson was a pleasant surprise. Hopefully he can build off that performance. Homeruns are great, but not when most of them are solo. Leaving men on base in scoring position when you have no outs is really bad.

I think the team needs to hold a players only meeting and get back in the batting cages. They need to take what the pitcher is giving them and try to just get on base, whether it's a bloop hit, bunt, seeing-eye single, work the pitcher for a walk....whatever. When the pitcher delivers a meatball down the middle at 96mph, go ahead and take your home run swing. But when he dickers around the plate, you have to adjust your swing and protect the plate. We've seen some wide strike zones so far this year. This team just doesn't seem to make any adjustments and it's mind-boggling.

There is an interesting article on the four-letter network about the troublesome number of strikeouts in MLB ... some interesting tidbits:

- In April, there were 1,092 more strikeouts than hits, the largest such gap in any month in major league history.

- In the 1980s ... nine strikeouts per game ... Now there are twice as many.

- In Game 7 of the 1960 World Series the Pirates beat the Yankees 10-9 ... no strikeouts. 2020 Game 1 of the Reds-Braves wild-card series (13 innings) a combined 37 strikeouts.

- Analytics have hitters relying on it too much instead of reacting ... Every time a hitter walks up there now, he thinks 'On 1-0, he throws a breaking ball 43 percent of the time.'

- significant increase in velocity among pitchers

- Reggie Jackson has the record for career strikeouts ... averaged 125 per year (Dansby Swanson already has 54 strikeouts in only 42 games)

Joey Gallo has 61 strikeouts and 31 hits in 144 atbats. About 1/3 of his hits are for extra bases (3 doubles, 7 homers).

Just putting the ball in play to score a run or advance a teammate to the next base doesn't matter to a lot of today's players. To me the game changed in 1998 when Sosa and McGwire had their 60-70 HR chase.

Remember the "Chicks Dig the Long Ball" slogan campaign. Maybe women should come out and claim "We Dig Base Hits with Runners in Scoring Position for the Win" instead. Would that help?

Maybe Braves fans can start a "Raise Our Spirits, Raise Your Batting Averages" campaign.
