Probably too political...but worth a shot to try and discuss things? Maybe?

========================
"UNITED NATIONS/BEIJING/SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea's foreign minister said on Monday that President Donald Trump had declared war on North Korea and that Pyongyang reserves the right to take countermeasures, including shooting down U.S. bombers even if they are not in its air space.

"The whole world should clearly remember it was the U.S. who first declared war on our country," Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho told reporters in New York.

"Since the United States declared war on our country, we will have every right to make countermeasures, including the right to shoot down United States strategic bombers even when they are not inside the airspace border of our country," Ri said.

"The question of who won't be around much longer will be answered then," Ri said in a direct reference to a Twitter post by Trump on Saturday."
=========================

So that's going to be Korea's Gulf of Tonkin Incident...only this time, if they actually do shoot down one of our bomboers...apparently it's going to happen in full view of everyone.

I think now would be a good time for cooler heads to prevail and to de-escalate things.

My opinion is primarily based in my desire not to die in a nuclear war. Hope that's not out of line.

This unrelated cartoon is actually very related to other situation.

The rhetoric and insults have to stop. Impetuous childishness.

We need a mediator to calm both sides down as neither has shown much of a desire or ability to de-escalate the situation.

Things are moving in the wrong direction an untenable rate. It does no one any good, it only increases NK's desire for an warhead on an ICBM. Counter productive to say the least.

My skin is too sensitive for radiation / nuclear fall out. End this madness now.

While everyone needs to calm down, the main thing we need to look at is how China is involved. I "believe" there is an agreement of some sort whether it's documented or not that China will back NK if they are attached but will stay out of it if they attached the USA. While I think they might be egging the USA on or just spewing B.S., I'm hopeful they will not attack first and we won't start it. While hopeful, my faith in our President is about zero so nothing will surprise me.

Is there anyone reading this thread that thinks American troops should still be in Korea?

North Korea is surrounded by nations with much larger populations and economies, not to mention more than one current nuclear power and at least one that is able to quickly make a nuclear weapon.

How the hell, in 2017, with everything we have going on, are we a participant in any of this?

Americans keep voting against interventionists, but it's the one policy that apparently isn't allowed to be changed.

"In an editorial, the Global Times said China should make it clear to both sides that “when their actions jeopardize China’s interests, China will respond with a firm hand.”

“China should also make clear that if North Korea launches missiles that threaten U.S. soil first and the U.S. retaliates, China will stay neutral,” it added. “If the U.S. and South Korea carry out strikes and try to overthrow the North Korean regime and change the political pattern of the Korean Peninsula, China will prevent them from doing so.”

I believe in our president

There I said it

I think he is correct in pressuring china to do something

Nk has been making threats against the US before Trump became president

Nobody had the balls before to stand up to him

I truly think one of rocket mans inside guys takes him out for the sake of NK

Surely there not all nuts right?

Could see this exact post being typed up by someone in NK about us also.

Just hope someone, somewhere can begin a trend of ratcheting down tensions.

I'm so over the theatrics.

All sides need to shut up and stop slinging stupid insults back and forth. Negotiation has not worked over the past 20 years and it is clear that insults will not work either.
The only party that can force a solution is China and if they do not want a solution then there will be no solution.

I agree but would add they have always acted like cartoonish villains with Iraqi Ministry of Defense hyperbole. We should not be matching it and working hard with China on a solution with more dignified responses. Things have changed in that they actually may have the ability to fire a warhead a great distance. Not sure why now is the time to then push this likely unstable person into doing something stupid.

I remember when you would go out in college there was always one guy who couldn't stop running his mouth. Jawing at some dude at the bar, mouthing off to the bouncer, then backtalking the cop outside. No matter how hard you tried to tell him just calm down and walk away and everything will be fine, he Never. Shut. Up. Then you're in a fight or somebody's in the back of a squad car.

Everybody just needs to chill.

This is clearly not an issue that is new, its been stewing for a while. I would LOVE the rhetoric to be more subtle and civil but I don't think either are able. What is also a shame is don't we have enough military action going on right now?
1) Do we really need to get involved in another military action?
2) isn't the trillions we are spending in the Middle East enough to stimulate out military war machine, do we really need more?

We, America, have established ourselves as quite the war mongering society, being the world police force and all.

So they accuse of declaring war and have yet to tactically do anything. Good news should that day ever actually happen then.....

Positive flying B1 bombers off the cost of NK was a bad idea to make a show of force.

Did anyone see the recent CNN special Inside North Korea? It was fascinating. The entire country is brainwashed from the time they are babies to believe the USA is out to destroy them.

Yeah-I saw some of that. They had video games the kids played to train for killing invading American's.

Was facinating that when the reporter talked to kids/adults they were all very out going and forthcoming about how they felt about Americans and then he said he was American, they all clammed up.

Where would they have gotten that idea?

"We went over there and fought the war and eventually burned down every town in North Korea anyway, someway or another, and some in South Korea too.… Over a period of three years or so, we killed off — what — twenty percent of the population of Korea as direct casualties of war, or from starvation and exposure?" General Curtis LeMay.

The funny/sad thing is that we totally suck at policing at home...

I've made my views clear. Kim Jong-Un is doing what he thinks he needs to do to stay alive. If the US didn't have a history of invading countries and taking out their leaders I don't think he'd be ratcheting things up as he is. If North Korea truly does do something stupid and launches missiles at a country, then we do whatever it takes to take him out. But the threat that he might isn't a reason to do so any more than it's a reason for us to just go taking all other leaders out worldwide. If Trump has proved anything, it's that every country is capable of doing anything.

My views are that if you assure KJU that we aren't going to come take him out, that we have no interest as long as he leaves South Korea alone, and that he can spout whatever nonsense he wants as long as he sticks to himself then he'll simply do that. If however he does feel that we're about to truly take him out, then I think he takes as many of his enemies with him as he can, and there's no telling how many deaths result; and right now I'd point that blame directly at the leader of the US.

Wait a minute!

Is the LR now being serious?

I thought the New LR was about food, booze , occasional chick pics, bs stories of self accomplishments, staged shark attacks etc

Now we're going into big boy stuff?

Wth, cups, hurner, fan2 u, becca and some old posters will never come back

Heck even funk only drops by
Cman is in and out like a fart in the wind

What's going on?

Big boy stuff scares all the jokesters off

Stop! For the love of all things that are fun in the LR

Take ego and pride out of it. It sounds like the U.S. shouldn't start anything unless the U.S. is attacked by NK or South Korea asks the U.S. to take NK out.

Or am I oversimplifying?

Anyone remember when W included NK is his Axis of Evil? And that was going on 20 years ago.

Yeah and honestly there was probably little to support that either. Allegedly it was because NK was sharing nuclear info and other assistance with Iraq and Iran but I'm not sure how much of that was even true. When you've got China and Russia already fully up to date and ready to give you anything you can pay for under the table...I don't think there's much Lil Kim (or Biggie Kim back in the day) has to offer.

But, my point is that has to be apart of Kim's thinking..........IIRC, he was in a private school here in the US.

Just my opinion, but I don't think we should be involved in NK or frankly 90%+ for where we've stuck our nose in over the past 20 years or so. All we've seemed to accomplish is destabilising the ME, losing American military personnel, killing a lot of people the great majority of which were not going to bother us, and burning through money and equipment that we could use in more important areas.

Don't get me wrong, I'm far from a dove and if I could be accused of anything it would be for being "bloody minded" because I absolutely believe the WW2 strategy of utterly destroying the enemy and then building them back AFTERWARDS has proven to be successful while our tiptoe around has only proven to create decades long, simmering destabilised areas. But neither am I one of these "chicken hawks" arguing we should be invading everyone over relatively minor disputes all while hiding behind Ponch.
