My family came from Santiago de Cuba. Both sets of grandparents were born and raised there and my dad came over during operation Pedro Pan. My mom was born in the US.
My grandmother passed away a few weeks ago and on her death bed she said she had always wanted to go back to Santiago and see if one last time. She said that if she can never go back that she wanted her grandchildren and great grandchildren to see it if they have the chance.
Since my mom worked tirelessly over the last few years tending to my grandmother and this will be the first Christmas that we wont have my grandmother, I am planning to surprise my mom with a cruise to Cuba that happens over Christmas that stops in Santiago and Cienfuegos in Cuba in order to honor my grandmothers wish. I figured a cruise would be the easiest way to see Cuba at this point in time. I also wanted to go on one that went to areas other than Havana. My family ties are in Santiago so when I saw that Royal Caribbean had an 8 night cruise to those two ports in Cuba and also St. George island, I said "Why Not?" If not now when?
Has anyone taken a cruise to Cuba or know anyone who has?
I am excited to see (even a little glimpse) of where my family came from. I had always had mixed feelings about visiting Cuba, even after Castro died but I also want to honor my Abuela. We are planning a three generation cruise. We used to be 4 generations of women until she passed away. Its a daughter, granddaughters (my sister is coming as well) and the two great granddaughters (my daughter and niece).
PS -- its a surprise. Those of you who I am friends with on FB please dont post anything so my mom doesn't see it. Thanks.
