That my friends is your definition of counter attacking football.
Perhaps that gives them belief that they are a team of destiny. Shapes up for a fun match up with Brazil. Feel very bad for Japan. Again, results like this are what scare the hell out of managers and why they park the bus when they have a lead. There has to be a happy middle ground between attacking and defending but that loss will sting forever.
One of the best if not THE best game on this WC. Too bad for Japan as they looked much better then just about every other team in the round of 16.
Today was wonderful on the heels of yesterday's sleep-inducing lack of action (until PK's anyway).
The one danger sign for Belgium is that Brazil will not be as weak at the back if they find themselves behind against the Seleção. It was very entertaining but Japan had some missed opportunities and Belgium cannot be as wide open in the next match IMO. I do think that it was probably the perfect tune up for Belgium ahead of the game. A 2-0 cakewalk would have done them no good.
That may have been the most entertaining half that I can remember at any WC in a long time.
Before committing, double check at the MGM sports book that the bar within, called Turf, will be open. If it's open it will be a great spot and you'll be among many soccer hooligans with buckets of beer, but if it's not it could be pretty average.
Thankfully Belgium pulled it off. I don’t have a problem with Japan winning but we don’t need Brazil having a cake walk to the semi’s. Looking forward to the Belgium/Brazil match up.
Listening to the Mexican manager whine about Neymar flopping made me laugh. No one does flopping better than Mexico, except maybe Brazil. I can't stand playing Mexico because you know as soon as they get a goal they're going to just lay around on the ground for the rest of the game.
Similar to the NCAAT, everyone loves underdogs/upsets in the WC, but too many water down the quality of the tournament the deeper it goes.
Agreed. I don’t want Brazil winning. Poor Japan and no offense.... but Belgium is the better match.
What's with all the Brazil hate? At this point they are probably the team I am cheering for the most.
I'm sure a lot of it is the long-term success they've had. Everyone gets tired of seeing the same team playing for the championship too regularly. I agree with you though; they're an enjoyable team to watch. They're highly skilled and generally play an attacking style.
They’re a complete team: lethal attack. Dominant midfield. Rock-solid defense. Excellent keeper.
No one else remaining other than France, to a degree, can make the same claim.
Seriously, that VW commercial with ol' girl saying "cheer for Brazil, we have 20 trophies"... yeah, that's what gets me cheering for someone. My allegiances are typically a little more thought out than "will I get to cheer for a championship within the next 2-4 years?"
For me, it’s that I’m not just a soccer fan when the WC is going on. I grew up watching soccer, have a team in Italy that my family has always followed and enjoy the sport each and every year. So for me, I’ve never liked Brazil. I enjoy their game, they are almost always an excellent team but I can’t get that WC ‘94 final out of my head. That being said, Ronaldo (the original) is one of my favorite all time players.
Saturday night was our first Atlanta United game. Sat in the nosebleeds, missed two goals waiting in the beer line and then taking one of my kids to the bathroom the second I got back to my seats with the beers. First time in the new stadium too. All in all it was fun, but a little stressful negotiating that place. The crowd is great, but it feels very claustrophobic there. I guess I'm not used to Atlanta sports venues being packed with loud, enthusiastic fans.
That last sentence made me laugh. Yeah Atlanta United is not the typical Atlanta crowd....lol.
It’s like a friggin breath of fresh air to me to see a lot of people get excited over a pro Atlanta team. Very few UGA rednecks there so another positive...
Belgium looked like they were playing a junior high team. They must have been a head taller to a man than the Japanese side.
...And yet they were largely unable to take advantage. Japan plays amazing team football.
