The Official 2018 World Cup Thread...

England giving up the counter and dropping 2-3-5 on defense is working.

Guess the VAR was off. MLS referring skill on display. Falcao gets kicked in the head an no yellow

Well I bet the Brits really want to drink all the vodka now.

Is it possible that James throws on his jersey and subs before PK's?

I don't have a better solution (and I really don't mind penalty kicks) after they finished playing 120? minutes and were still even, but imagine if football used 5 random players to try and kick a field goal to settle ties.

The games today were both pretty lousy - and these were (rankings-wise) the better teams in that half. I know anything can happen, but it's hard to imagine the eventual champion not coming from the side that consists of Uruguay/France Brazil/Belgium

Wow, Ospina makes a big save to put Colombia in the drivers seat, then they essentially fold. We'll see what this has taken out of England for the next game.

They should be okay. They rested most of their key players for the last group game and have until Saturday to recover.

Had to stay away from all electronics since 2pm as I had to watch on DVR.... so glad England won!

People ripping on Geiger, but IMHO, he did the best he could. Colombia was a total disgrace, and England tried to out-Colombia them.

Notice how after just about all of Colombia received a yellow card, they actually just started playing the game rather than cheap shotting, flopping, and bitching...and they were immediately then the better side, controlling the game, and eventually earning the equalizer. I wish these Latin teams would realize they have enough talent to just play straight up and win it that way.

You have to be kidding me casting stones on Colombia. English flopped all over the place. Non head butt and bs PK call

One thing I’ve noticed since watching soccer regularly since 2006 the South American players and countries flop more than any other players. Why is this?

Americans generally find flopping disgraceful and frankly so do many Euro’s. I tell people it’s because in soccer one goal is the difference between winning and losing. People will do anything to get an advantage in order to get that goal. Sure flopping occurs everywhere but the South Americans do it the most. Am I wrong on any of this?

It’s your Anglo bias. The English were the flippers in that game

The worst floppers, after México, who are by far the worst, are the Italians, and the Portuguese.

Italians are the masters of the dark arts. I would say they are pretty much the antithesis of Brazil. The reason you see so many players diving is because those Italians have the 4 stars on their kits (WC titles). If it wasn’t effective they’d stop. I think the globalization of the EPL with so many players from around the world has brought diving into the English game where once it was frowned on. This happened years ago. I also think Latin players do not like the physical play and overreact to physicality to draw yellow cards and open up play. La Liga more open play and protects its star players more than other leagues.

Correct. And then I'd put Colombia and Brazil (although to be fair to Brazil, it's largely Neymar) in the very next set of teams. What England did today is not normal of their style of play. Maybe they're just young and were getting caught up in the Colombian antics?

And it wasn't a bs PK call. It was absolutely the right call. They've been really trying to crack down on exactly what Sanchez did to Kane. Just because it's rarely called doesn't make it bs. It makes all those non-calls in previous games bs.

I disagree about Italy. Yea I know they are one of the nations “known” for flopping but that is more because of the late 90’s-mid 00’s flopping of Izaghni and Gattuso. Besides that, I can point to Klingsman and Germany basically bringing flopping to the mainstream in the early 90’s. Brazil flops like crazy along with Argentina and Mexico. Robben and the Netherlands flop better then most, recently. Italy won 2 of their WC Stars early early on before flopping was a thing and another in 1982 when they didn’t flop as well. If you want to say their 2006 WC run consisted of some flopping then sure but to say flopping was effective in bringing them their 4 WC championships shows a lack of soccer history knowledge. I mean I can even point to Rivaldo flopping like crazy in Brazil’s ‘02 WC run.

They really need to do something about the flopping. Worse than the flopping is the drama to the ref after every call or no call. The players constantly surround the ref, often physically contacting the ref, as they vehemently deny a call or cry for a call. That would be easy to stop with a touch the ref, even by accident, and you are gone. Also maybe have ability for outside monitors to buzz down if they find evidence of clear flop, stop play, and eject flopper. So no interruption unless they find clear evidence. It would stop the most ridiculous behavior fast.

My favorite part is the barrel rolls they are now implementing after going down. Think I saw one guy do six barrel rolls.

Cool story.

Italy are floppers though.

But how dare you mention Gattuso in that indictment! He was one of the hardest-working, toughest, most legit players of his generation. He was absolutely not a flopper.

I think you have him confused w/someone else. Did you mean Mauro Camorenesi perhaps?

Also, (but unrelated) Gattuso recently gave us this absolute gem as coach of AC Milan, when asked how his team was playing...

I love that clip so much!

In your haste to be the LR resident soccer expert you didn’t read what I wrote. I didn’t disagree that Italy flops. I’m disagreeing on the assumption that Italy has 4 WC victories because of flopping and it working for them.

You are correct about Gattuso, he was a hard working tough player. However he mastered the art of flopping so well that you apparently didn’t even notice he was doing it. That clip is great though. I’m sure there will be many more of them as he goes further his managerial career.

It’s looking more and more like Cavani will not play for Uruguay tomorrow. Damn shame because I thought they really had a shot to beat France and go all the way. We’ll see what happens but all the reports aren’t good.
