Football Takeaways from FSU's demoralizing loss to UNC

In a season of low points, Florida State didn’t lay a goose egg in the first half. But beyond Ryan Fitzgerald’s 56-yard field-goal attempt, the Seminoles managed just 61 offensive yards and allowed UNC to convert 8 of 10 third-down conversions.

Mike Norvell’s offense and Adam Fuller’s defense offered up very few moments early. And it didn’t get any better in the second half.

Omarion Hampton had four touchdown runs and a 49-yard TD reception — racking up 172 rushing yards and 93 receiving yards — in North Carolina’s 35-11 win over FSU. It was a season low in points for the Seminoles.

Soccer FSU defeats Notre Dame on Sunday in ACC Tournament quarters

The FSU soccer team is the No. 3 seed in the ACC Tournament and will host No. 6 seed Notre Dame on Sunday at 8 p.m. in an ACC Tournament quarterfinal.

Sunday's game is on the ACC Network.

If the Seminoles win, they would face No. 2 seed Wake Forest in a semifinal on Thursday in Cary, N.C.

VT and UNC also face off on Sunday at 6 p.m., with the winner playing No. 1 seed Duke.

Football Second Look Sunday: FSU loses to UNC 35-11 and falls to 1-8 on the season

The Osceola staff will be spending part of today and tomorrow morning to work our way through the TV copy of FSU's loss to North Carolina on Saturday afternoon. The Seminoles dropped to 1-8 on the season and finished ACC play with a 1-7 record.

North Carolina dominated the game from start to finish with the Tar Heels racked up 500 yards of total offense including 289 yards on the ground.

Meanwhile, FSU's offense was held to 201 yards of total offense including just 42 yards rushing on 28 carries and 159 yards through the air.

My thoughts before I start my rewatch are much the same this morning as they were before the game. It was an embarrassing performance and another loss that was hard optically. This team was not competitive.

The offensive line continues to play awful maybe even regressing. The disappointing thing here is that your two veteran offensive tackles continue to give up sacks and pressures at an alarming rate and are playing worse than the two young guards lining up next to them.

The two young quarterbacks continue to take a beating on a by-play basis, or are running for their lives. The coaches don't do anything to help Brock and Luke from a play calling standpoint. As athletic as these guys are they should be getting them out of the pocket and give them half field reads because they don't get enough time to read the entire field. When Jordan Travis was in the early stages of his development, they did a lot of half rolls, boot passes, until he was ready to take command of the entire offense. This would also take some pressure off the offensive line. The wide receivers continue to struggle to get open and blocking hasn't gotten any better. And I am still baffled that they will not get the ball in the hands of Toafili more. He had eight rushing attempts and one catch on two targets. He is the best skill player on offense, you have to get him the ball more, but this has been an ongoing issue.

The more disappointing performance came from the defense. There was no doubt about what UNC was going to do. They were going to hand the ball to Omarion Hampton and try to run through the middle of the FSU defense and for the most part they did that without an issue. FSU's defense could not match the physicality of Hampton or the UNC offensive line. They also made UNC's QB look like Russell Wilson in his prime in the first half. This FSU defense is soft across the board both physically and mentally and has been since the start of the season.

I thought UNC would win this game coming into the weekend. I didn't expect it to be in blowout fashion and didn't expect to see a listless and despondent FSU team that clearly had some guys quit on it during the game.

It is inexcusable to be 1-8 at FSU under any circumstances but the optics of the 1-8 season make it even worse, especially yesterday's loss.

As far as coaching changes in-season, we will see. I don't see it happening. But even when these changes happen, today, tomorrow at the end of the season these assistant coaches that aren't retained are just fall guys. If it weren't for Mike Norvell's contract, he would be the person held accountable for this season, and he should be. This is on him more than it is on any one individual in that building.

This program is in a very precarious place. Norvell says he is the guy to get this team out of this rut moving forward. It sounds like he will get at least a year or two to prove that. However, with the way this season continues to play out, it's fair to have questions about whether he is the right guy.

It has gotten so bad that even the most loyal FSU fans are questioning whether or not this team can beat Charleston Southern, an FCS program, in a couple of weeks. If that happens......but for right now let's not buy any more problems than this program already has, which are plentiful with a hard row to hoe ahead.

No. 5 Stanford defeats No. 23 FSU volleyball

FSU sports information:

The No. 23 Florida State volleyball team (16-6, 8-4) fell to No. 5 Stanford (17-4, 9-3) in four sets (25-20, 16-25, 10-25, 22-25) on Sunday afternoon in Tully Gym. Sunday marked the first match between the Seminoles and the Cardinal in ACC play and second match in program history.

In an intense first set, the Seminoles and the Cardinal tied nine times, while only experiencing two lead changes. As the set winded down, Florida State went on a 3-0 scoring run highlighted by two kills from Taylor Head and an ace from Audrey Koenig to give FSU the set, 25-20.

The second set began tightly contested with FSU and Stanford going point for point. Stanford began to turn the tide midway through the set before pulling away and tying the match with a 25-16 victory. The third set was dominated by the Cardinal as they won 25-10.

The final set of the match was highly competitive, as the lead changed five times and the two tying 12. However, the Stanford offense willed the Cardinal to a 25-22 victory.

Offensively, the Seminoles attacked at a .254 clip and tallied 45 kills. Audrey Koenig led the offensive effort with 12 kills and one ace, followed closely by Taylor Head with 11 kills and seven digs. Loren Robertson accumulated 19 assists and six digs.

The Seminoles will be back in action next Friday as they host Wake Forest at 6:30 p.m. on ACCNX.

Football Recruiting Rivals100 WR/TE Kaiden Prothro undeterred by record, sees chance to showcase skills at FSU

One of the elite unofficial visitors to come on campus on Saturday was Bowdon (Ga.) tight end Kaiden Prothro. The Rivals100 prospect for the 2026 class has been on campus multiple times this year and he explained why when I spoke to him yesterday.

Football FSU's two-QB system hasn't worked yet but Brock Glenn is keeping the faith

Through three games, FSU's two-QB system hasn't worked, with twice as many interceptions (4) as passing touchdowns (2). But that hasn't affected Brock Glenn's relationship with Luke Kromenhoek or his faith in the players around him on FSU's offense.

We talked to FSU's starting QB after Saturday's loss and I thought his comments and demeanor were impressive.

What would be a respectable class for FSU?

QB
Tramell Jones -6'1-200 (4) (Committed)

Comments:
Jones had a season-ending injury for Mandarin. He is locked into FSU. With Glenn and Kromenhoek on the roster, I expect Jones to take a RS, learn the system, get healthy and compete in 2026. I still feel FSU will bring in another QB from either the portal or potentially HS. I would take another HS arm just in case Brock moves on.

RB
Byron Louis-6'1-200 (4) (Committed)

Comments:
I really like the future at RB with Louis, Davis and Danzy. Still would like to see FSU bring in another RB in this class. I could see Sam Singleton move on. He seems to be getting lost in the shuffle. I would like to see FSU make another run at Deandre Desinor, who is committed to WVU. Taevion Swint, who is committed to UCF, would also be an option IMHO.

WR
CJ Wiley -6'4-200 (4) (Committed)

Malachi Toney - American Heritage (5'10-190) (3)
Jayvan Boggs - Cocoa-(6'1-200) (4)

Comments:
I know many feel Wiley will flip. From what I know on Georgia's end, I feel FSU will hold onto Wiley. I know they are the home school but even the Bulldogs don't believe he is a lock to flip. Wiley is one of if not the most important recruits. I would not be shocked to see Brandon Innis from Ohio State hit the portal and end up at FSU. The tie with Surtain would give FSU a legit shot. He has flashed at Ohio State but has not gotten a legit shot. He is a guy who would come in DAY 1 and start and really help FSU out. If FSU holds onto Wiley and adds Toney and Boggs, their WR class along with what they landed last year is a good two year haul.

TE
Chase Loftin - 6'5-220 (4)(Committed)

Tae'shaun Gelsey - 6'4-220 (3) (Committed to UF)

Comments:
I am a big fan of Loftin. Adding Loftin to Amaree Williams and Landen Thomas is impressive. These three make FSU TE room one of the better ones in the ACC. Gelsey is committed to UF for now.

OL
Solomon Thomas - 6'4-280 (5) (Committed)
Mario Nash - 6'5-280 (4) (Committed)
Peyton Joseph - 6'4-320 (4) (Committed)

Daniel Pierre Louis - 6'5-290 (3)

Comments:
Before the season it looked like FSU would sign and all-time great OL class. I still feel with Thomas, Nash and Joseph it is pretty darn good. I like that all three of these guys bring both size and athletic ability. FSU needs to get bigger on the OL. Louis is not a bad take if he is the 5th or 6th guy in this class. FSU still needs tackles. I could see the Noles picking off another high school lineman or two.

DE
Javion Hilson - 6'4-235 (5)
Chase Linton - 6'4-220 (4)
Darryll Desir - 6'4-240 (3)
Mandrell Desir - 6'3-240 (3)

Comments:
I like that Linton is still coming in on an OV. At least that is what we have heard. Now things can change. He has become a priority. I am going to go out on a limb and say FSU pulls Hilson back in. He is my NSD shocker. FSU needs a major player at DE. Not too many other programs can say they produced Jermaine Johnson and Jared Verse the past two years. Patrick Payton has been a good enough pass rusher. Hilson will be one of the guys FSU overspends on. Elite pass rushers are hard to find. The Desir twins are two guys with upside. Darryll is better but Mandrell is not bad himself. I feel if FSU can pull these three they are in good shape.

DT
Kevin Wynn-6'4-320 (4) (Committed)

Jeramiah McCloud - 6'3-300
Jalen Wiggins - 6'3-260

Comments: It would not shock me to see Wynn end up at Georgia. I was told early on that if Georgia whiffs on the top guys in-state they will go after Wynn. Keep your fingers cross and hope Georgia gets the top guys in-state. If that happens, I expect Wynn to stick to FSU. The Seminoles in the end may benefit from UF losing. If Napier gets canned then Jalen Wiggins and Jeramiah McCloud could both end up in FSU class. If that happens, Wynn can kick rocks for all I care.

LB
Ethan Pritchard-6'2-200 (4) (Committed)

Comment: I have no idea right now what FSU will do at linebacker. Tavion Wallace and TJ Alford are still in play but some things need to be cleared up first.

S
Max Redmon-6'2-190 (3) (Committed)
Gregory Thomas-6'2-200 (4) (Committed)

Comments: I feel like FSU sits in a good spot at safety. You would always keep a spot open for an elite guy. Redmon and Thomas give FSU both size and length in the secondary.

CB

None

Comments: You know my feelings about roster management. FSU right now is not on any top flight corners. I feel they need to be. I like the young group of corners but don't ever go a class without signing one guy at each spot. They could go and try and get a vet in the portal.

Respectable consistency.

Here is my struggle with where we are at.
We have been either horrible or pretty darn good (even elite besides the snub and what happened in the Orange Bowl) but, nothing much in between.
Was our run the last 2+ years just lightening in a bottle?
Other than that it has been pretty pathetic since Jimbo checked out.
There is no way the football program can continuously bottom out to the points of the Willie T. debacle and what we have now. I get it with the current being locked in a cage by the ACC we are not going to contend for National Championships every year but, there is absolutely no excuse for what we have and are currently seeing unless the so called relevancy FSU brand and it's worth is all smoke and mirrors.
I watched Louisville take it to Clemson last night. Can we not recruit and develop with the likes of Louisville football? Sure Dabo and Clemson have their own issues but, what we wouldn't give for 6 and 2 at this point.
I try to figure out some valid justification for what we see week after week from this team but, I am at a loss at this point.

Soccer FSU finishes off regular season with 1-0 win at Miami

FSU sports information:

The No. 6 Florida State soccer team (12-2-2, 7-2-1 ACC) concluded the regular season with a 1-0 victory over in-state rival Miami (5-8-4, 1-6-3 ACC) on Thursday night. The Seminoles qualified for the 2024 ACC Women’s Soccer Tournament, FSU has appeared in all 30 tournaments since the program’s inception.

The Seminoles controlled the early run of play and were able to create some dangerous chances. Marianyela Jiménez received the ball and dashed into the box, before making a deft move to send the Miami defender sliding and fired a low driven shot to force a save from the Miami goalkeeper.

As the first half drew to a close, FSU made seven substitution changes. Minutes later, Ashlyn Puerta made a quick throw-in to Olivia Lebdaoui who flicked the ball to Camille Ashe, Ashe followed suit and flicked the ball to Wrianna Hudson. Hudson controlled the ball off her chest, fired her half-volley shot low and away, and put the Seminoles up just before the break. All four players linked in the build-up of the goal had come off the bench.

Florida State nearly doubled its advantage off Solai Washington’s tight near post shot that was only met by the Hurricanes’ keeper’s outstretched leg. FSU finished through the remainder of the second half and clinched its spot in the ACC Tournament.

The Seminoles now hold a five-game winning streak over Miami and end the regular season with four straight victories. Hudson has recorded a point in four straight games and scored four goals in the last four appearances.

Florida State will host an ACC First Round game against either North Carolina or Notre Dame on Sunday night. The complete bracket will be announced by the ACC on Friday.
