Florida State’s improved depth was on display in the season opener, with six Seminoles coming off the bench and combining for 50 points.

Sydney Bowles had the biggest impact, scoring 18 points while adding a rebound, assist and steal in 19 minutes as the Seminoles cruised to a 119-49 win. The junior transfer from Texas A&M made 4 of 7 shots from beyond the arc as FSU shot 39.5 from long range.

Noles Look to Keep Hot Streaks Going Against Wake Forest and NC State

• Florida State has been very successful against Wake Forest and NC State in its program history.
• FSU has a combined record of 78-15 against Wake Forest and NC State.
• The Seminoles have won 16 consecutive matches against Wake Forest and have not lost to the Demon Deacons since 2010. FSU has lost just one match to Wake Forest since 2005.
• The Noles are 37-3 against NC State since 2000.

Louis Approaching 1,000 Kills

• Khori Louis is approaching the 1,000 career kills in the Garnet and Gold uniform. Louis needs just seven kills to reach 1,000 career kills.
• Louis is looking to become just the seventh Nole to reach 1,000 career kills in the rally scoring era.
• Louis will be just the second middle blocker in program history to reach 1,000 kills in the rally scoring era. Brianna Barry was the other middle blocker to reach 1,000 career kills.

Noles Started on the Right Foot in ACC Play....Again

• FSU has consistently started off ACC play in the win column in the last decade.
• Excluding the 2021 spring season where there were no non-conference matches, FSU has won its last 10 ACC openers.
• FSU has started 2-0 in the ACC in eight out of the last 10 seasons.
• FSU has never finished worse than 5th in the ACC under Head Coach Chris Poole.

Not Slowing Down on Offense

• FSU has proven to be one of the top offenses in the ACC and the country so far this season.
• As a team, FSU ranks 16th in the country and third in the ACC with a .279 hitting percentage and also ranks 46th in the country and fourth in the ACC with 13.49 kills per set.
• The Seminoles have been spreading the wealth as they have three players who have recorded 200 or more kills this season and five players who have recorded 100 or more kills this season.

Climbing the Ranks

• FSU was ranked No. 24 in this week's AVCA/TARAFLEX Coaches Poll. The Noles were ranked 15th in week one which was the program's highest ranking since 2017.
• FSU has been ranked in the AVCA Coaches Poll for 13 consecutive weeks which is the program's longest streak since when the Seminoles were ranked in every poll from Aug. 30, 2011, to Sept. 17, 2017.
• FSU opened the season ranked 20th in the preseason poll. It was the first time FSU was ranked to start the season since 2017.
• FSU picked up a ranked win against No. 25 Georgia. It was FSU's 41st ranked win in program history and was the first time FSU beat a ranked non conference opponent since defeating No. 14 Florida in 2021.
• FSU has picked up three ranked wins this season already with wins over No. 25 Georgia and No. 25 Miami. This is the first time since 2014 that FSU has had multiple ranked wins before Oct. 1.

Koenig Saving Her Best Season for Last

• The reigning 2023 ACC Co-Player of the Year Audrey Koenig is back for one last season with the Seminoles and will look to solidify herself as one of the top players in FSU history.
• Koenig was just the fourth Seminole to win the ACC Player of the Year award and was the first Nole to accomplish the feat since Payton Caffrey in 2018.
• Koenig leads the team with 290 kills in 21 matches and is third on the team with 185 digs.
• Koenig has tallied 179 kills in ACC play which leads the conference. Koenig's serve has also come on strong in ACC play as she has recorded 20 aces in ACC play which is tied for fifth in the ACC.
• Koenig has recorded 10 or more kills in her last 19 matches which is the longest streak of her career and the longest streak by any FSU volleyball player since Luiza Ramos in 1994.
• Koenig was named the ACC Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 30 after tallying 36 kills in two wins over Miami.
• Koenig also earned 2023 AVCA All-America Honorable Mention honors for the first time in her career.
• Koenig's 13 double-doubles last season were the 13th-most in FSU history. Koenig is up to seven double doubles this season.
• Koenig has recorded 1,283 kills during her career with the Garnet and Gold. Koenig became just the sixth player in FSU history to surpass 1,000 career kills in the rally scoring era. Her 1,283 kills is the second-best mark in school history in the rally scoring era.

Louis Continuing to Stay Hot for the Noles

• FSU senior and Tallahassee native Khori Louis put together her best season as a Seminole in 2023 as she earned First Team All-ACC honors and AVCA All-America Honorable Mention for the first time in her career.
• Louis hit a career-high .432 in 2023 which ranked fourth in the nation and was the fifth-best mark in school history and the best mark since Sareea Freeman in 2012.
• Louis has picked up right where she left off as she is hitting .419 with 236 kills which is second to Koenig's 267 kills. Louis also leads the team with 97 blocks.
• Louis's .419 hitting percentage ranks 13th in the entire country and is first in the ACC.
• Louis holds a career hitting percentage of .378 which is currently the best mark in FSU history. The previous record is .371 which is held by Brianna Barry.
• Louis was second on the team with 271 kills and 93 blocks in 2023.
• In her career, Louis has recorded 993 kills which is 8th in program history in the rally scoring era. She needs just 45 kills to move into 7th all-time in the rally scoring era.
• Louis also ranks top 15 in program history in the rally scoring era in solo blocks, assisted blocks and total blocks.

Taylor Head Heating Up for the Noles

• The Seminoles made one of the biggest transfer moves in college volleyball last season as they picked up transfer Taylor Head from Arkansas.
• Head was one of the best hitters not only in the SEC but the entire country last season as she picked up AVCA Third Team All-America honors after recording 494 kills with a .231 hitting percentage for a Razorback team that qualified for the Elite Eight.
• Head leads the team with 229 digs and is third on the team with 214 kills.
• Head has played very well in her last six matches as she has recorded five double doubles in her last eight matches.
• Head was one of the best all-around players in the country last season as she was third in the entire nation with 22 double-doubles.
• Head ranked in the top 10 in the SEC in total kills, kills per set, total attacks, attacks per set, double-doubles, points and total digs.
• Last season, Head would've led the ACC in total kills, points, double doubles and total attacks. Head also would've ranked in the top five in kills per set, attacks per set and points per set.
• Head spent her spring with the Florida State beach volleyball team where she finished the season with a 8-2 record.

Dupes Is Back and Making an Impact

• After a knee injury kept her off the court in 2023, libero Emery Dupes is ready to become a force for the Seminoles' defense once again.
• Dupes has played in 81 out of the 82 sets this season with 95 digs.
• Prior to injury, Dupes led the team with 287 digs in 2022 while playing in 94 sets.
• As a freshman, Dupes earned All-ACC honors and became the first freshman libero in FSU history to earn All-ACC honors.
• Broke the school freshman record with 3.88 digs per set and was also just the 12th player in FSU history to record over 400 digs.
• Dupes has also been terrific behind the service line recording 66 aces in three seasons. In 2021, Dupes recorded six service aces in a single match which is tied for the third-most ever by a Seminole in a single match.

Perry Becoming a Force in the Middle for the Noles

• After redshirting at Iowa State last season, Perry has become a force in the middle for the Seminoles.
• Perry is currently second on the team with 78 blocks and 1.07 blocks per set.
• Perry had a season-high five kills in the win at Boston College on Oct. 18.
• Perry had seven total blocks against No. 25 Georgia which was just one block off her career high.
• Perry also has recorded 49 kills on 113 attempts.

Filimaua: A True Swiss Army Knife

• Kyleene Filimaua is a true do-it-all for Florida State volleyball.
• Filimaua has played in 79 out of the 82 sets for the Noles and has played all over the court including starting at libero in eight out of her last 11 matches.
• Filimaua has recorded 100 kills this season and has recorded five double-digit kill matches after recording just one double-digit kill match last year.
• To go along with her 100 kills this season, Filimaua has also recorded 199 digs, 52 assists, 20 aces and 19 blocks.

Phelan Becoming a Force on the Service Line and on Defense

• Kenna Phelan has shown off her nasty serve this season, and it became a game-changer for FSU.
• In 10 sets on opening weekend, Phelan recorded 10 aces from the service line. Her 10 aces were the eighth-most in the entire country on opening weekend.
• Phelan has recorded 27 service aces in 22 matches so far this season.
• Phelan recorded 19 digs against Auburn and 15 digs against North Florida. It was the first time in her career that Phelan has had back-to-back matches with 10 or more digs.
• Phelan has also been great as a setter in FSU's 6-2 system as she has recorded 396 assists.

Henke Off to Strong Start for the Garnet and Gold

• After missing opening weekend, Iane Henke has come right in and been a very valuable asset for the Seminoles.
• In her debut, Henke tallied 10 kills and six blocks against Cal Poly.
• Henke recorded a season-high 11 kills at Boston College on Oct. 18.
• In total, Henke has had 109 kills, 45 digs, 54 blocks and five aces in 20 matches for the Noles.

Noles Going Through Gauntlet of a Schedule

• The Seminoles will get tested early and often in the 2024 season.
• In 10 non conference games, four of those games came against teams that made the 2023 NCAA Tournament.
• Nine out of the 10 teams that FSU played in the non conference had a winning record in 2023.
• Four out of the Noles' final eight matches will be against teams in the top 16 as they will play No. 1 Pitt, two games against No. 10 SMU and No. 16 Georgia Tech.
• FSU has already played No, 4 Louisville, No. 6 Stanford, No. 22 Florida and No. 25 North Carolina.

Some interesting thoughts on player development / roster retention from Mike Norvell and Mack Brown:

Mack Brown was answering a random question at the end of a press conference when he detailed some of the wildness of roster retention in the transfer portal era. UNC’s coach was asked about Jacolby Criswell and how the quarterback has developed, when Brown opened up about the portal being open even when it’s not really open.

“I’m telling you, there’s agents calling kids every day saying, ‘I don’t know how much you’re playing. Would you like to transfer to this school?’ And we get calls every day. It’s unbelievable. From kids playing,” Brown said after UNC’s win over FSU on Saturday.

I had a revelation today at lunch. Someone wearing Garnet and Gold must have kicked a leprechaun or stole a pot of gold or pissed on a shamrock or something to bestow this Irish curse on the beloved Seminoles during Week Zero in Dublin Ireland.

Whomever it was, please take the trip to South Bend and make amends and allow FSU Football to get back on track. Doing so anonymously is allowed, just get it done before 7 PM on November 9th.

Mike Norvell and Adam Fuller said they didn't see a consistently good level of physicality from FSU in last week's loss to UNC. That could present a real problem entering this week's game against a top-10 Notre Dame team defined by its toughness and physicality.

Florida State closed out its week of practice availabilities Wednesday morning. The Seminoles held their second and final open practice of the week before Saturday night's game at No. 10 Notre Dame (7:30 p.m. on NBC).

Here are our observations from the day's work:

• The offense started the day out pretty well in the customary one-minute drill during the first team period of Wednesday practices. Brock Glenn found Kentron Poitier for a first down on the first play of the drive. Then after a few failed plays (including a Darrell Jackson batted pass at the line), Glenn was given time to find a wide open Ja'Khi Douglas over the middle of the field for a huge chunk gain on 4th and 10. That set up a field goal in the final seconds, but the kick was blocked by Pat Payton and returned by Shyheim Brown for a "touchdown." Promising drive, but no points for the offense.
• As has been the case a lot lately, it wasn't a particularly great day for the offense. The downfield passing game wasn't there much in good-on-good work with the exception of 7-on-7 pass skelly, which is obviously much easier for the quarterbacks to operate in. The freshmen skill-position players were a big portion of the offense during this pass-skelly period. Lawayne McCoy and BJ Gibson picked up chunk yards on crossing routes and running back Micahi Danzy had a catch in the flat where he added some yards after the catch. McCoy also caught a very deep pass in 1-on-1s. But on the whole, the passing game didn't have a ton of success.
• On the ground, Sam Singleton had a few nice runs and Glenn had a rushing touchdown in goal-line work. But the defense made things hard for the offense through the largely situational practice.

Six Florida State soccer players were recognized as the ACC announced the 2024 All-ACC Women’s Soccer Awards on Wednesday afternoon. FSU placed four athletes on the All-ACC First, Second, and Third Teams while also placing two athletes on the ACC All-Freshman Team for a second consecutive season.

Taylor Huff and Jordynn Dudley were named to the All-ACC First Team as the team’s two highest scoring returners from last season’s national championship side. FSU has earned multiple appearances on the All-ACC First Team for an eighth consecutive season dating back to 2017.

Huff has been named to the All-ACC First Team for the first time in her career and has earned All-ACC honors in back-to-back seasons. Huff earned an all-conference honor in all four years of collegiate play as she was named to the All-SEC Second Team in 2021 with Tennessee, All-SEC First Team in 2022 with Tennessee, All-ACC Second Team in 2023, and All-ACC First Team in 2024. She currently leads the team in all scoring metrics with 10 goals and nine assists for 29 total points.

Dudley has received back-to-back All-ACC First Team honors in her first two seasons at Florida State. Coming off her 2023 ACC Freshman of the Year campaign, she leads the team in points scored in ACC play with five goals and five assists and is averaging over two points in all 11 games played. She scored multiple goals for the United States at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup to record a bronze medal during the 2024 collegiate campaign.

Heather Gilchrist and Mimi Van Zanten were named to the All-ACC Third Team. Both players were named to the ACC All-Freshman Team in their respective campaigns.

Gilchrist has anchored the Seminole defense through the past few seasons and has recorded five shutouts and scored her first career goal. The junior made starts for the United States in the nation’s run to a bronze medal at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup. Van Zanten has recorded her first double-digit scoring season with four goals with two assists as a defender. She has started in all but one game this season and has recorded eight shutouts for the Seminoles. Van Zanten also leads FSU with three game-winning goals as a sophomore.

Wrianna Hudson and Solai Washington were named to the 2024 ACC All-Freshman Team. Hudson has scored seven goals with five assists while Washington has scored five goals including a brace over No. 8 North Carolina. The two freshmen were part of an immense freshmen class that has provided 62 points across six field players with four total freshmen each scoring double-digit points.

FSU has earned four honorees across the three All-ACC teams for the seventh straight season.

The latest on many top prospects around the country:

Each of us realized Florida State would need to rebuild, not reload, the football program and most of us wanted that process to start in 2024 by playing those players who will be eligible in 2025. Rather than just watch the game, we're providing a roster you can use to identify the younger players and use as an evaluation sheet with the player's number, name, position and class in numerical order.

There are 71 scholarship players (by our count) who will have eligibility in 2025. Thirty-seven of these players line up on defense, 32 on offense, with two specialists. Note: Several of these players have been injured and may not play this season.

There is no certainty about who will return for the 2025 season but these are the players who could return from an eligibilty standpoint. Use the list when you watch the game or to build what you think could be a two-deep roster for 2025 and to identify positions where FSU will need portal players.

FSU 74 N Ky 62 The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly


The Good

Florida State starts off the season on a positive note beating a team picked to finish third in the Horizon conference and has the talent to make it to the NCAA tournament. Once the Seminoles built a double digit lead, the Norse never did get it to below ten. Overall the 'Noles controlled the game throughout and handled N Kentucky's match up zone defense, a defense Taylor Bol Bowen called "gimmicky", such as how they rotate or how they pick up players coming up the floor. In past years, FSU has really struggled against match up zones and off the wall systems like what the Norse run. Not tonight as FSU was able to penetrate and score. 44 points in the paint as a matter of fact, something you might not expect from a team that has ten new faces on the bench, Length and depth, aspects that are typical of a Leonard Hamilton team, showed up in this game on both ends of the floor.

FSU was far more physical and showed far more effort than we saw much of last season.

Depth. Hamilton played eleven. He felt he probably could have played a couple of players even more minutes than he did.

Defense. Deflections galore (50 of them) caused 22 turnovers ( including14 steals) by the Norse leading to 22 points for the 'Noles. The Seminoles defense several times held N Ky to multiple minute scoreless streaks.

FT shooting, 14-18 (78%).

The second unit that showed some nice defense midway through the first half.

Coming into the game, Jamir Watkins had scored in double digits in 19 straight games. Make that 20 straight games as Watkins scored 17.

Bol Bowen with a career high 17 points (15 in the first half) along with 6 rebounds and 7 of 7 from the line.

Other notable newcomers who impressed. Daquan Davis, Jerry Deng, and Bostyn Holt.

Plays of the game: The 13-1 run to give FSU an 18-11 lead. FSU shooting 9-11 in a stretch while holding the Norse without a point for more than four minutes. Bol Bowen with the deflection to Holt who found Watkins for the slam on the fast break. Chandler Jackson with a nice floater off the Watkins assist. Holt with the dribble drive step back floater, 45-33.


The Bad

While praising his team's effort, Hamilton as you would expect felt there were many things to improve on such as some questionable passes. Rebounding. Sealing off. Things like that. .

The 8-0 Norse run giving them a 10-5 lead.

The couple of occasions that the defense did not pick up the shooter in transition.

The 1-7 start to the second half. However they compensated with defense holding the Norse to just one basket over that span.

Malik Ewin 0-6 from the floor. As Hamilton said post game, we all know he is a better player than that.


The Ugly

3 point shooting or lack thereof. 4-22. That's 18% for those of you keeping score at home. We of course got the standard and stock line that they shoot the three well in practice. I'll believe it when I see it.
