Brock processing the blitz. . .

Clemson did not have to blitz much, their defense was pretty vanilla, but they didn't have to do anything risky to win.

Duke will blitz, it's just who they are. I've gone back and forth on how I feel about that, and how I think Brock and the offense will respond. . .and the optimist in me has won out.

I don't think Brock will process the blitz like a veteran, but I do feel he will at least get rid of the ball or scramble if needed to minimize the damage if it gets home. I also feel we may finally see a few large chunk plays tonight due to the exposure left open by the blitz. DJ just constantly got destroyed and lost massive yardage every time, but I think tonight we have the ability to actually take advantage of a defensive gamble more often than it will hurt us.

Khori Louis added to AVCA Player of the Year watch list

FSU sports information:

Florida State middle blocker Khori Louis was one of 16 players added to the AVCA Division I Player of the Year Watch List on Friday afternoon. Louis joins teammates Audrey Koenig and Taylor Head who were named to the list last month.

Louis has been one of the best and most efficient hitters in the entire country all season long. Louis is second on the team with 174 kills while hitting an ACC-leading .445. Her .445 hitting percentage ranks 10th in the entire country, and Louis is well on her way to breaking the school record for highest career hitting percentage. Out of the Seminoles' 16 matches this season, Louis has hit above .600 in eight of them and has also recorded double digit kills in nine matches this season. Louis is also FSU's top blocker this season with 67 total blocks and 1.14 blocks per set.

The list will be trimmed down in early November with the winner being announced on Dec. 20 at the AVCA Convention in Louisville, Kentucky.

Sports Business $2.78 billion settlement with colleges to allow athlete payments gets preliminary approval

From the Associated Press:

A judge granted preliminary approval Monday to the $2.78 billion legal settlement that would transform college sports by allowing schools to pay players.

U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken released an order setting a timeline for a deal that would put millions of dollars into the pockets of college athletes, who can begin applying for payment on Oct. 18.

A final hearing is set for April 7, 2025, the day that one of college sports’ biggest moneymakers, March Madness, comes to a close with college basketball’s national title game. If finalized, the deal would allow the biggest schools to establish a pool of about $21.5 million in the first year to distribute money to athletes through a revenue-sharing plan. Athletes would still be able to cut name, image and likeness deals with outside groups.

Former college athletes from as far back as 2016 would be able to apply for their share of $2.576 billion set aside to help them recoup money they could’ve made from NIL deals, which weren’t allowed until 2021.

This settlement resolves three major antitrust lawsuits filed against the NCAA, including one spearheaded by Grant House, a former swimmer at Arizona State. Berman’s law firm says the value of new payments and benefits to college athletes is expected to exceed $20 billion over 10 years.

Football Recruiting Film evaluation of 2025 QB/DE Chaz Coleman

FSU offered 2025 QB/DE prospect Chaz Coleman, 6-5 and 205-pounds, from Warren (OH) Harding HS. He has thrown for 411 yards this season and also run 500 yards. On defense he has 53 stops and 13 TFLs. He was offered by the Seminoles on Sunday night.

First Impressions of his HUDL tape: Coleman is long and athletic. He is extremely quick off the ball at defensive end. He can run and gains ground on ball carriers quickly. He has a really good, quick spin move. He hustles in pursuit. Better at defending run away from him than run to him. Doesn't play with hand in ground on defense. Very raw but has a huge upside.

At QB, he is really raw as a passer, but you see athleticism. Throws the ball pretty effortlessly and is dangerous as a runner. Most of his highlights at QB are as a runner.

My take is that his future in college is at defensive end or outside linebacker. A ton of potential has size, speed, quickness.

Football Could freshman quarterback Luke Kromenhoek make his FSU debut this week?

Mike Norvell said after FSU's loss to Clemson that there was a plan to potentially get Luke Kromenhoek into the game that didn't pan out.

Now, Norvell isn't tipping his hand if the true freshman QB could make his debut Friday night at Duke as part of a modified two-QB system.

Basketball Leonard Hamilton on Virginia coach Tony Bennett's retirement

Florida State coach Leonard Hamilton on the retirement of Virginia’s Tony Bennett:

“Tony Bennett embodies everything a high-quality basketball coach should be. He built strong relationships with his players, worked seamlessly with his administration, and earned deep respect nationwide - not just as a basketball coach, but as a person of great character and class. His presence will be deeply missed.”

“Tony Bennett is, first and foremost, a tremendous person who is also one of the most accomplished coaches in the storied history of ACC Basketball,” said ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips, Ph.D. “He is a fierce competitor, but one who always leads with integrity, class and unwavering values. He has made an indelible impact on countless student-athletes and developed them not only in basketball, but also as young men. He is a legend who we will deeply miss having on the sidelines as well as his daily impact in the league, the sport and college athletics. We are incredibly thankful for all he did in making college basketball better with his steadfast dedication and commitment to the game. We wish Tony, his wife Laurel, and their entire family all the best in this next chapter.”

Soccer FSU soccer faces Virginia in annual Paint It Pink game

FSU sports information:

The No. 22 Florida State soccer team (8-2-2, 3-2-1 ACC) hosts its annual Paint It Pink game in a primetime battle with No. 23 Virginia (10-4-0, 3-4-0 ACC) on Thursday night. The Seminoles currently hold a 22-game unbeaten streak at home dating back to 2022.

Florida State and Virginia clash for the 40th matchup in the past 30 years, the Cavaliers are the second most played opponent in program history. The last meeting between the two sides was a top-3 battle in Charlottesville with Jody Brown scoring 47 seconds into the game for the 1-0 victory. The Seminoles are unbeaten in the past five games against UVA.

Jordynn Dudley drove a powerful shot into the bottom left corner for the winning goal at Boston College and continued FSU’s 46-game scoring streak. Dudley has registered a point in all four games since returning from the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup with the United States.

Taylor Huff leads the squad in all scoring categories with eight goals and six assists for 22 total points. Huff became the fastest to reach 20+ points in the past five seasons and is only 6 points away from reaching her point tally from last season.

The freshman class has performed brightly with a combined 40 total points, 13 goals and 14 assists. This marks the most freshmen goal contributions in the past five seasons across all three metrics. Wrianna Hudson and Ashlyn Puerta have each scored three goals and provided four assists while Dantas has scored four goals with two assists.

FSU has scored 37 goals in 12 games this season, the most in that span since 2021 (43). The defense has kept seven clean sheets including three straight to open the season.

Football FSU opens as very small underdog for Friday's game at Duke

Although Florida State and Duke have drastically different records this season, oddsmakers seem to view the teams pretty similarly.

Circa Sports shared its opening betting lines for the Week 8 slate of college football games Sunday afternoon. FSU (1-5, 1-4 in ACC) opened as a one-point underdog for Friday's road game at Duke (5-1, 1-1). Considering home field is normally factored at around three points on a betting line, this means the Seminoles would likely be favored over Duke on a neutral site and definitely if this game was being played in Tallahassee.

Duke got off to a 5-0 start to its 2024 campaign before losing at Georgia Tech before a bye this week. However, the slate of teams the Blue Devils have beaten (Elon, Northwestern, UConn, Middle Tennessee State and North Carolina) is not the most impressive collection. That probably explains why the Seminoles and Blue Devils are viewed similarly.

Football Recruiting FSU out of contention for four-star DE Chase Linton

Four-star defensive end Chase Linton spoke with Rivals National Analyst Sam Spiegleman earlier today about his recruitment and Florida State seems to no longer be in contention. Linton released a top three of Georgia, Georgia Tech, and Rutgers.

We reported that Linton had set an official visit to Florida State. I now believe this visit to have been cancelled.

Florida State has recently restocked the board at defensive end so there if this is a case of FSU moving on rather than Linton dropping FSU, they may feel better about a different prospect given the sudden change.

Football Vikings trade for Cam Akers, bringing him back to Minnesota

Via Vikings.com:

Minnesota announced it has agreed to terms of a trade with the Houston Texans that will return Cam Akers and a 2026 conditional seventh-round pick to Minnesota in exchange for a 2026 conditional sixth-round pick. The agreement is dependent on Akers passing a physical.

The deal to acquire Akers is happening a year and a month after Minnesota acquired him from the Los Angeles Rams in September 2023. It also is nearly a month since Akers played against the Vikings in Week 3.

Coach Kevin O'Connell and Vikings Offensive Coordinator Wes Phillips overlapped with Akers at the Los Angeles Rams, a run that included helping L.A. win Super Bowl LVI.

Observations from FSU's final practice availability before Duke game

Florida State closed out its week of practice availabilities a day early this week Tuesday morning ahead of Friday night's game at Duke.

After a balanced practice Monday, Tuesday morning's practice was more solidly won by the FSU defense. Here are the observations from Tuesday's day of work:

  • That impact from the defensive line began from the very first team period of Tuesday's practice. Both Darrell Jackson and Byron Turner Jr. had sacks during a one-minute drill which derailed the offense's drive just after it crossed midfield. Marvin Jones Jr. added what was not whistled but sure looked like another "sack" during the subsequent 11-on-11 period and Pat Payton added a "sack" of his own near the end of this period. Payton added a second sack during red-zone work near the end of practice.
  • In the secondary, veteran safety Shyheim Brown had an interception during the middle 11-on-11 portion on a tip-drill pass that was slightly high and bounced off the intended receiver's hands into Brown's vicinity. Edwin Joseph followed that up with an interception of his own shortly thereafter on a pass where the freshman DB put himself in position to run the receiver's route and snag the pick.
  • Azareye'h Thomas was also his usual tight-coverage self Tuesday, racking up quite a few pass breakups. He broke up a deep pass to Hykeem Williams in 1-on-1s and added another PBU in the red zone on a pass over the middle of the field. Freshman Ricky Knight Jr. had a great pass breakup of his own during 7-on-7 pass skelly work.
  • After the offense had a pretty good day Monday, I didn't think Tuesday was their best day. They never seemed to really get into a rhythm until scout-team work at the end of the practice. However, I did see some moments where Brock Glenn operated the offense well. He had a few great anticipation throws where he released the pass before the receiver even broke on his route, correctly identifying where they will be when the pass gets there. That's one clear area of improved understanding in the offense where Glenn has grown since his true freshman season last fall.
  • Freshman running back Kam Davis had the best rush of the day, breaking off a touchdown run down the far sideline during red-zone work. We haven't seen him really break a run through the first half of his true freshman season, but Davis' speed is legit and he remains a real threat to bust one in the near future.
  • Freshman wideout BJ Gibson, somewhat recently elevated from scout team to contributing practice player, had another of the convincing 1-on-1 rep wins he seems to have at every practice Tuesday. He blew by the safety covering him, creating separation and snagging a deep ball for an uncontested chunk gain. Gibson also had a 1-on-1 catch in the back corner of the end zone where he did well in his route-running to create the space he needed to make the play and got his feet narrowly inbounds.
  • Jalen Brown also had a 1-on-1 deep catch down the sideline and Ja'Khi Douglas showed off his toughness on a 1-on-1 rep where he caught a pass at the goal line on an underneath route and then held onto the ball while the defensive back tried to rip the ball out and threw him to the ground in doing so.
