Plays that sent the season off the rails

Looking back over the season and how easily it could have been a different season if certain plays had been made. For me it starts with the GT game and our 2nd possession. We had easily scored on our 1st possession and was moving the ball on our 2nd when faced with a 3rd and long. LT has the first drop of the season while he was totally uncovered with at least a 15-20 yard gain ahead of him. If he makes the catch I think we continue on down the field and go up two scores. It seems the drops then continue throughout the whole receiving corps that game. I think the game turns out totally different if the LT makes the catch and run. Next was the BC game. I swear I don't recall Murlock ever dropping a pass in his career here. Yet he drops three that game including a TD pass. From the drops continued for him. Can't recall the other receivers who also had crucial drops in that game but they have all had their share of drops. Those two games set the tone for the way the season has gone. I don't think there is no way we would have beat Clemson this year but I really think if we catch the bal the first two games we would now be no worse than 5-2 and maybe even 6-1.

The season has shined the spotlight on a lot of issues with the team but I really believe the drops the first two games totally sunk the season.

Baseball Exhibition Updates: Florida State vs. Alabama | Game 2

Golf FSU's Lottie Woad in tie for second place at Landfall Tradition

FSU sports information:

Junior Lottie Woad is in a tie for second place in the individual standings, and the No. 11 ranked Florida State Women’s Golf team is in a tie for second place in the team standings after two rounds of the Landfall Tradition at the Country Club of Landfall. The Seminoles begin play in Sunday’s final round tied with North Carolina in second place and just five strokes behind Duke as the trio of ACC teams battle for the team championship of the event.

Woad carded an even par score of 72 and has a two-round total of 137. She is just two strokes behind Sophia Burnett of South Carolina and tied for second place with Katie Li of Duke. Woad is playing for her sixth consecutive top three finish along with the fourth victory of her collegiate career.

Florida State counted four scores at 74 below as freshman Sophia Fullbrook (71), senior Kaylah Williams (71) and Woad (72) finished with scores at par or better. Freshman Christina Surcey carded a 74 in the second round. Woad (tied for second), Fullbrook (tied for 16th) and Williams (tied for 16th) are all in the top 20 of the individual standings.

“We hung in there and played good golf today,” said Head Coach Amy Bond. “What you want as a team through the first two rounds of an event is a chance, and heading into the final round we have just that. With the expected windy and possibly rainy conditions tomorrow, we have to play disciplined golf and take what the course gives us.”

Woad is just two strokes out of the lead with her 137 total and scores of 65-72. She carded three birdies in the second round to bring her two round total to 11. Woad completed her round at 1 stroke under par over her final 10 holes of the day with one birdie and nine holes scored at par. The All-American has not been more than one stroke over par at any time during the first two rounds of the event.

Woad is looking to earn her second career top-five finish at the Landfall Tradition after finishing in a tie for fourth during the spring of 2022. She is a total of 12 strokes under par in five career rounds in the Landfall Tradition.

Fullbrook is in a tie for 16th place with a two-round total of 143 and scores of 72-71. Her second career under par score of 71 on Saturday included a near perfect card with two birdies, 15 holes scored at par and just one bogey. With a birdie on the fourth hole of the day, she went under par and was never above even for the remainder of the round. Fullbrook closed out her round with a birdie on 18 and a 1 under par score on her final 10 holes of the round.

Williams, who is playing some of the best golf of her career, carded a score of 71 – a total that included the fifth eagle of her Florida State career. She is in a tie for 16th place with a two round total of 143 and scores of 72-71. Williams’ 36-hole total of 143 is the second best of her Seminole career and is rivaled only by a 141 total after two rounds at the Fall 2023 ANNIKA Intercollegiate.

Surcey has carded scores of 70-74 for a 36-hole total of 144 and is in a tie for 24th place in the individual standings. She totaled two birdies on her back nine on Saturday and has six birdies in the first two rounds of the event. Freshman Alexandra Gazzoli, who finished her back nine in the second round at 1 stroke under par with two birdies is in a tie for 64th place. She has a two round total of 151.

The Seminoles will play with Duke and North Carolina – in an all-ACC final group for the second consecutive day in the final round – with a shotgun start at 8:45 a.m. on Sunday morning.

Football How many yards, points have drops cost Florida State's offense this season?

I watched every one of FSU's 429 offensive snaps so far this season to get an idea of exactly how many yards and approximately how many points the Seminoles have left on the board behind their 22 drops through seven games.

Here were my findings.

Soccer No. 17 FSU soccer hosts No. 4 UNC on Friday (7 p.m. on ACCN Extra)

FSU sports information:

The No. 17 Florida State soccer team (10-2-2, 5-2-1 ACC) hosts Senior Night in the final home game of the regular season against No. 4 North Carolina (14-2-0, 7-1-0 ACC) on Friday night. The Seminoles currently hold a 24-game unbeaten streak at home dating back to 2022.

The honored seniors will be two-time national champion Ran Iwai, current FSU points leader Taylor Huff, Texas A&M transfer Carissa Boeckmann, Portland transfer Camille Ashe, NAIA transfer Marianyela Jiménez, and Maryland transfer Maddie Smith.

Florida State and North Carolina will match up for the 50th meeting between the two ACC powerhouses. The two sides are the lone ACC Tournament champions in the past decade, Florida State earning eight conference tournament titles in that span. The last meeting saw Jordynn Dudley ascend to the national spotlight with a two goal performance while Mimi Van Zanten scored an unbelievable equalizing goal off a corner kick with just seven seconds remaining. Both players went on to be named to the 2023 All-ACC Freshman Team.

The Seminoles totaled 11 goals over the last two games against No. 23 Virginia and preseason No. 7 Pittsburgh. Wrianna Hudson and Solai Washington combined for five goals in past two games, both freshmen recording a goal in each game while Hudson scored a first-half brace against Pittsburgh. Huff and Giana Riley each scored a goal in each game, Huff pushing her goal tally to double digits.

Huff leads the squad in all scoring categories with 10 goals and seven assists for 27 total points. Huff became the fastest to reach 20+ points in the past five seasons and is only one point away from reaching her point tally from last season.

The freshman class has performed brightly with a combined 54 total points, 18 goals and 18 assists. This marks the most freshmen goal contributions in the past five seasons across all three metrics. Hudson leads the class in goal scoring with six while standing level with Ashlyn Puerta on four assists.

FSU has scored 48 goals in 14 games this season, the most in that span since 2021 (49). The defense has kept eight clean sheets including three conference game shutouts.

Gates are scheduled to open at 6 p.m. and general admission is free. The first 300 fans will be eligible to receive a 2023 National Championship replica ring voucher to redeem in the back of the concourse. Fans can also take a picture with the 2023 National Championship trophy. Students will be eligible to purchase $5 draft beer with a physical student ID.

The 7 p.m. game will be available to watch on ACC Network Extra. Live video and stats will be available at Seminoles.com.

North Carolina defeats FSU volleyball in five sets

FSU sports information:

The No. 19 Florida State volleyball team (14-5, 6-3) fell in a five-set heartbreaker (25-19, 22-25, 25-22, 32-34, 9-15) to No. 25 North Carolina (16-2, 8-1) on Friday night at Carmichael Arena in Chapel Hill, N.C.

The Noles got off to a great start in set one as the jumped out to an 11-5 lead, but the Tar Heels stormed back to tie the set at 13. The Noles were able to gradually increase their lead to 21-17, and Audrey Koenig finished off the set to give the Noles a 1-0 lead in the match.

The roles were reversed in set two as North Carolina was the one to jump out to an early lead as they led 12-6, but FSU slowly chipped away and tied the set at 17 thanks to a kill from Taylor Head. The Tar Heels created a little separation with a 21-19 lead, but a service error then an ace from Emery Dupes tied the set at 21. The Tar Heels closed the set on a 4-1 run to take the set.

Set three stayed close for the first half of the set until the Noles were able to create some separation to become the first team to 20 with a 20-16 lead. The Tar Heels closed the gap to one at 21-20, a couple of kills from Koenig and Iane Henke and two Tar Heel errors helped the Noles take a 2-1 lead in the match.

Set four was an all-time classic as the teams went back and forth for the entire set. The teams continued to trade points, but it was the Tar Heels who prevailed with a 34-32 win to send the match to five sets for the sixth time in the last eight meetings between the two teams.

UNC used the momentum from the fourth set and jumped out to a 9-3 lead in set five, and the Noles were unable to get anything going as they fell 15-9 in the final set.

Koenig, Head and Khori Louis were all phenomenal for the Noles as they combined for 58 out of the Seminoles 66 kills in the match. Koenig led the way with 22 kills for her 16th consecutive match with 10 or more kills. Louis added 19 kills which was one kill short of her career high. Head added 17 kills and 15 digs for her fourth double double in the past five games. Koenig recorded a double double with 10 digs along with Loren Robertson who had 31 assists and 12 digs.

FSU will be back in action at Duke on Sunday at 1 p.m. on ACCNX.

Golf Lottie Woad ties a school record with a 65 in first round of Landfall Tradition

FSU sports information:

Junior All-American Lottie Woad shot a school-record-tying 65 and is in first place in the individual standings, and the No. 11 Florida State Women’s Golf Team is in a tie for first place in the team standings after the first round of the Landfall Tradition at the Country Club of Landfall. Woad’s 7-under par score of 65 included eight birdies, nine holes scored at par and just one bogey.

Woad leads the individual standings by two strokes over Duke’s Katie Li and North Carolina’s Helen Yeung who both carded scores of 67. Florida State and Duke are tied for the team lead as both squads carded team scores of 11 under par 279. The Seminoles (Woad, first, and Christina Surcey, tied for ninth) and Duke (Katie Li, tied for second, and Andie Smith, tied for sixth) both have multiple players in the top 10 of the individual standings.

Woad’s stellar round of 65 – which began with a birdie and included birdies on four of her first six holes – marked the fourth time during her Florida State career that she has tied the Florida State school record for a single round score. Seminole All-American Matilda Castren (2014-17) is the only other Seminole who has carded multiple scores of 65 with two.

“We made a lot of birdies today and that was the key to our round,” FSU coach Amy Bond said. “We talked a lot last night about playing for the second time in a week which is really hard to do. But their energy was way up and their enthusiasm was evident throughout the round. They were excited and did what they had to do to put the ball in the cup.

“I’m proud of each of the girls because they battled all day long and put us in a good position for the weekend.”

With a birdie on her first hole, Woad was on fire from the start of the round. She totaled four birdies on her first six holes and was three strokes under par at the turn. Woad then birdied four of her first six holes on her second nine and finished par-par-par to close out her 7-under par score for the day. It marked the second time this fall that she carded a 65; she totaled a 65 in the second round of the Schooner Fall Classic on September 23, 2024.

Woad, who is currently ranked as the No. 1 player in the World Amateur Golf Rankings for the 13th consecutive week, lowered her career stroke average to 70.50 with her score of 65 in Friday’s first round – the lowest career stroke average in school history.

“I played solid golf today and gave myself a lot of birdie chances,” said Woad. “I limited my mistakes.”

Freshman Christina Surcey is in a tie for ninth place in the individual standings as she carded a 2 under par score of 72. Her score included her first career collegiate eagle on hole No. 14 – a score which set her on quite a run over her next 13 holes. Beginning with her eagle on 14, Surcey was three strokes under par over her final 13 holes to finish under par in a given round for the second time in her first nine rounds as a Seminole.

Florida State counted scores of even par 72 by both Sophia Fullbrook and Kaylah Williams in the first round.

Fullbrook totaled three birdies with 15 holes scored at par or better in finishing as a counting, even par score of 72. She birdied two of her final eight holes of the round and is in a tie for 22nd place in the individual standings. Fullbrook was never more than one stroke over par during her first 18 holes of the tournament.

Williams played her best golf to close the round as she birdied two of her last four holes to finish at even par 72. She scored par or better on her final eight holes and has now carded four scores of 72 in four of her last six rounds during three events.

Freshman Alexandra Gazzoli finished with a score of 75 – her best score in four rounds as a Seminole. She totaled four birdies including birdies on her final two holes to finish her best career collegiate round with a flourish.

With four counting scores at 72 or better, and all five scores at 75 or better, the Seminoles played their best team round of the fall with an 11 under par scores of 279.

The Seminoles begin play at 10:09 a.m. on Saturday and will play form the first tee with Duke and North Carolina.

Football FSU D set for major test vs. Heisman frontrunner Cam Ward, Miami offense

Through FSU's struggles this season, the FSU defense has allowed more than 30 points just once this season. That resolve will be put to the test tomorrow night against a Heisman contender in Miami QB Cam Ward and the Hurricanes' potent offense.

Basketball Observations from FSU basketball's exhibition win over Saint Leo

The FSU men's basketball team convincingly won its first preseason exhibition tonight vs. Saint Leo. Jamir Watkins appears poised to take a step forward in his production and quite a few of the many newcomers flashed in their unofficial FSU debuts.

My observations from the exhibition:
