Football Kyle Morlock named to Mackey Award watch list

FSU sports information:

Redshirt senior tight end Kyle Morlock earned a spot on the Mackey Award Watch List as one of the country’s best tight ends.

Morlock, from Blairsville, Ga., started 11 games for the Seminoles last season after transferring from Shorter College, where he was a two-time All-American. Morlock caught 19 passes for 255 yards and was FSU’s Offensive Newcomer of the Year. His 63-yard reception at Pitt was the longest of his career and the longest for a Seminole tight end since 2019.

Football FSU coaches, players confident in progress Brock Glenn has made since 2023

The FSU staff knows Brock Glenn got dealt a bit of a "raw deal" last year when he was thrown in the ACC championship game as a true freshman. With another year of experience under his belt, there's confidence in what he can do this now in his return to the starting lineup.

"He is built for it. I love his energy."

Football Observations from FSU's first practice of Clemson week

Florida State began Clemson week (or as I have started calling it, prep for the Billable Hours Bowl) Tuesday morning out on the practice field.

With head coach Mike Norvell confirming after the practice that DJ Uiagalelei will miss Saturday's game due to injury and will be evaluated over the next few weeks, that left plenty of opportunities for new starter Brock Glenn and new backup Luke Kromenhoek to get reps during Tuesday's practice.

I didn't think either of them started particularly well but they grew into the practice at least a bit. Glenn had a great 1-on-1 ball down the sideline to Malik Benson that he appeared to catch with a full-extension grab before the ball was knocked out. Still a great throw, though. He also made more plays in the final few periods, hitting a nice pass downfield to Kentron Poitier on a read-option keeper that fooled the defense and made a few nice throws on the run in 7-on-7 pass-skelly work, creating yard-after-catch opportunities for his wide receivers.

I thought Kromenhoek was really quite good during that pass-skelly 7-on-7 segment. He strung together a number of great plays including a deep shot to BJ Gibson (who had a great day with an incredible 1-on-1 catch while falling down as well), a pass over the middle to Brian Courtney in a tight window and a dime of a wheel-route pass to running back Micahi Danzy. Kromenhoek also uncorked a great deep ball in 1-on-1s that found an open Darion Williamson, who had burned by his defender, in stride.

Although he wasn't practicing, I thought Uiagalelei looked quite engaged talking with his fellow quarterbacks and offensive players during Tuesday's practice. That hasn't been something we have seen a ton from him at FSU, but he seems to be embracing his current role while he recovers.

On the first play of the first team period in the red zone, Lawrance Toafili broke a 12-yard touchdown run. On the second play, the defense made a good play for an interception as Ashlynd Barker was in tight coverage and knocked the ball into the air for AJ Cottrill to pick it off.

On top of his good day in coverage, Azareye'h Thomas also made an impact on a few days as a blitzer from the cornerback spot. Marvin Jones Jr. made his presence felt on a few plays as a rusher and defensive tackle KJ Sampson made the most of being in the right spot at the right time, picking up a fumble at the line of scrimmage and returning it for a "touchdown."

We'll be back out at practice Wednesday morning for the final practice availability before Saturday night's game.

Soccer FSU to face Wake in matchup of top-10 teams

FSU sports information:

The No. 6 Florida State soccer team (7-0-2, 2-0-1 ACC) travels to No. 4 Wake Forest (8-2-2, 3-1-1 ACC) for its first ranked road match of the season on Thursday night. The Seminoles currently hold a 15-game unbeaten streak in conference play dating back to 2022.

Florida State meets Wake Forest for the first time since Maria Alagoa’s 97th-minute winning goal to send the Seminoles to the 2021 ACC Championship match. FSU has won the last four matches over the Demon Deacons dating back to 2018.

FSU remains unbeaten in the last six matches against top-10 ranked opponents, winning five top-10 matchups last season and 17 top-10 victories in the past four seasons.

The Seminoles continue to extend and break program records on their impressive run dating back to last season. Florida State has scored in 43 straight games and holds a 32-game unbeaten streak, both of which are program records.

FSU currently possesses a 12 game unbeaten streak on the road, one shy of matching its program best set back in 2015. The Seminoles have also recorded six shutouts to start the season and haven't conceded more than two goals in a game in the past 19 matches.

The reigning national champions completed eight games unbeaten before securing their first ACC shutout of the season in a 3-0 victory over Clemson. Mimi Van Zanten scored the first goal off the crossbar just minutes before World Cup returner Taylor Suarez secured the second goal. Lara Dantas sealed the game with a precise long-range shot to return to winning ways.

Taylor Huff leads the squad in all scoring categories with eight goals and five assists for 21 total points inside September. Huff is the fastest to reach 20+ points in the past five seasons and is only 7 points away from reaching her point tally from last season.

FSU has scored 33 goals in the opening nine games, the most in that span since 2009 (35) while conceding just four goals in the past 15 games dating back to the 2023 ACC Championship.

The top-10 matchup will kickoff at 7 p.m. ET and available to stream on ACC Network Extra. Live video and stats will be available at Seminoles.com.
