FSU 83 Miami 75 The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

FSU 83 Miami 75 The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

The fact that I could only watch the game on the phone on the music stand while playing a concert. That's bad. Or good depending on your POV.

The fact that the director caught me watching the phone on the music stand and didn't mind. That's good.

The fact that in the few minutes during intermission that I could listen to the TV guys and mostly heard everything else that had nothing to do with the action going on on the court. That's ugly.

FSU earning a winning record overall and .500 in the ACC thus avoiding back to back losing seasons for the first time during the Leonard Hamilton era. That's good.

Winning on Senior Day. That's good.

Leonard Hamilton moving into a tie for 4th place all time in ACC regular season wins. That's good.

Sweeping Miami for the season. That's good.

Beating Miami for the 12th time out of 13 games. That's good.

FSU avoiding having to play on Tuesday ending up as the 9th seed. That's good.

Win two or three games and maybe FSU will play in the NIT. That's good.

Miami finishing the season on a nine game losing streak. That's ugly ............ for them.

Miami fading in the second period as has been the case for most of the nine losses. That's good. For FSU.

Former Seminole Matthew Cleveland playing for a team that after going to the Final Four last season went 15-16 overall, 6-10 ACC this season and will definitely be sitting home as soon as they lose in the ACCT. That can't be what he had in mind when he signed with the Hurricanes. That's ugly. For him.

Cleveland "leading" the team in plus/minus with a minus 11. That's ugly. For him.

Darin Green with 26 points including 8 of 15 from three point land. That's good.

The rest of the FSU team going 4 of 18 from the same three point land. That's ugly.

Jamir Watkins with another double double (16 points, 11 rebounds). That's 17 straight games in double figures for Watkins. That's good.

FT's. 15 -19. That's good. Especially when Miami got to the line only 10 times and made just six.

Primo Spears with 2 steals giving him 100 for his career. That's good.

Miami shooting 48% for the game. That ain't good ........ for FSU.

The FSU bench crushing the Miami bench 41-6. That's real good.

FSU forcing Miami into 17 turnovers while committing just 9 themselves. That's good.

Up Next. Virginia Tech (18-13, 10-10) as the 8th seed. FSU split the season series with FSU winning 77-74 and losing 83-75 nearly one month ago. In that game, VT hit 11 three pointers and outscored FSU at the FT line by nine. Tip off is set for Wednesday at noon. Not sure which channel it will be broadcast on, but it will be one of the 312 networks from by the four letter network.

Baseball FSU secures sweep of New Orleans with second shutout of the weekend

With its second shutout of the weekend, FSU baseball completed a sweep of New Orleans Sunday afternoon to improve to 14-0. A trip to Gainesville to face Florida is on the docket next on Tuesday.

Fishbits (March 4)

This time of year is slow. The football team is getting set to start spring ball. There are some nuggets that we have gathered and put together in the past few weeks and will add them here.

DJ Uiagalelei - Been told by someone I trust that coach Mike Norvell is very excited about DJ's potential. MN likes his potential to really provide a deep passing game. His ability to push the ball down the field with the receivers FSU has given them a chance to be even more explosive this year. DJ has a strong arm and can really test the deep seam and outside the hash marks. DJ has shown to be very bright and will be a good pair with coach MN.

Malik Benson - He did not do much at Bama last year but we have seen this story before with transfers who were at one program and come to FSU and seem to shine. Benson has done and said all the right things so far. Been told he has done well this offseason. FSU lost a lot at the receiver position and Benson looks to be one of those who is going to take one of the starting roles and have an impact in 2024.

Earl Little - Had the chance to speak to Little's father. He has always been good to me. He was telling me how excited both he and his son are to be at FSU, that the scheme FSU runs fits his son's skill set. He showed me some practice video of Jr at Bama and you could see why this kid was so highly rated out of HS. He could make an impact this spring, which we would expect to carry over to the fall.

Jalen Brown - Spoke to someone who is tied into LSU and they were upset about Brown leaving. LSU is losing two first-round picks at receiver and Brown was going to step into a starting role this fall. He has size and speed. Look for Brown to be part of the deep passing game this year.

Richie Leonard - I have to see it to believe it. But I have been told he has gotten himself into better shape. This was an issue at Florida. He is going to get a chance to come in and start this year. Think D'Mitri Emmanuel.

It's a big year for Julian Armella and Jaylen Early. These two are all that is left of their OL recruiting class. Armella has the talent physically but needs to put it together mentally. Early also has the talent but needs to also show more consistency. I feel it is key for both players to develop this spring and fight for starting jobs in the fall.

RECRUITING, RECRUITING, RECRUITING

Myron Charles - DT -Port Charlotte - He looked good Sunday. Charles showed both power and finessed in drills. He is quick off the ball and will push you around. Charles has been offered by a ton of P5 programs. It looks like FSU is out in front and I am going to put in a forecast for FSU. He could commit before the summer starts.

Alvin Henderson - RB -Elba HS - I am not sold on recruiting kids out of Bama or Mississippi but with the transition at Bama and Auburn's struggles ... FSU could catch a Cam Akers-type break. Sometimes you just need breaks in recruiting and that could happen with Henderson. He is one of my favorite backs in this class.

Jaime Ffrench - WR - Jacksonville Mandarin - He is part of the SFL Express. Reality is they push their top kids to Ohio State. FSU still has a real chance as there is pressure on the staff at Ohio State to win big this year. Ffrench is also tight with Tramell Jones, and he is committed to FSU. This is one that will come down to NSD....So stay tuned until then.

Cortez Mills - WR - Homestead - FSU has been on and off with this kid. I hate to compare players to other guys who have had a ton of success, but Mills' recruitment starting to look a lot like Amari Cooper's. The same things I heard about Cooper. Not big enough, not elite level speed. Cooper proved everyone wrong. I think Mills will do the same. He is going to take a visit to FSU. He has great hands. Not just good hands. He has elite level body control. He is a great kid. I think Mills is someone that is going to be better in college than many kids ranked ahead of him.

Solomon Thomas - OT - I have him rated as one of the top lineman in the country. After attending UA this weekend and speaking to those who saw him Orlando they see the same things. He is an elite player and FSU got a good one. Now they just need to hold on to Thomas.

Gregory Thomas - DB - American Heritage - He is all FSU at this point. Just think it is a matter of time before he pulls the trigger for the Seminoles.

Darrell Duke Johnson - S - Another player who FSU is closing in on a commitment. FSU had a ton of success in Georgia last year. It looks like Georgia may be providing gifts to FSU again in 2025.

Baseball Fast start propels FSU to series win vs. New Orleans, 13-0 record

FSU scored 10-plus runs for the seventh time in the last eight games, blasting New Orleans for the second straight day to improve to 13-0.

Baseball Live Updates: FSU vs. New Orleans (Saturday, 6 p.m.)

After another resounding win Friday night, the Florida State baseball team will look to clinch its fourth straight winning weekend to kick off the 2024 season Saturday evening.

The Seminoles (12-0) take on New Orleans (8-5) at 6 p.m. at Dick Howser Stadium (ACC Network Extra) in a game that was moved back four hours from its originally scheduled start time of 2 p.m. FSU is looking to improve to 13-0 for the first time since 2018.

Due to this uncertainty about the weather, FSU elected after Friday night's game to hold normal Saturday starter Jamie Arnold back for Sunday's game and start Andrew Armstrong on Saturday. Armstrong has allowed no runs on one hit over 2.2 innings this season and this will be his third career start.

FSU will also be debuting its new pinstripe uniforms Saturday night after the uniforms weren't delivered in time for the start of the season. These uniforms will be FSU's traditional Saturday look the rest of the season.

FSU track and field takes three All-America honors on Saturday

FSU sports information:

No. 19 Florida State indoor track and field teams concluded the NCAA Indoor Championships on Saturday in Boston by capturing three All-America honors.

Jeremiah Davis added his second first-team All-America honor of the meet by placing third in the men’s triple jump with a measurement of 16.60m.

“Jeremiah did a lot of heavy lifting for us” FSU track and field coach Bob Braman said. “Jeremiah is the only jumper to record two top three finishes. He’s an incredible athlete who is an Olympian in the making.”

David Mullarkey placed 11th in the 3,000 meters (7:55.42), establishing second-team All-America after being seeded 14th coming into the event.

Shenese Walker finished fifth with a lifetime best, tying the sixth-fastest time in school history at (7.19), securing first-team All-America for the first time in her career. It was the highest finish for a Seminole since 2019 when Ka’Tia Seymour placed third.

“Spectacular race for Shenese,” Braman said. “Top five in her first ever National Championship. She saved her best races for the championship season. Really proud of her performance and development.”

The 19th ranked men’s team tied for 15th place with 14 points.

“We’ve finished in the top 15 two years in a row for the men’s side,” added Braman. “That’s big for a program that doesn’t have an indoor facility. I thought we competed hard during postseason, but we need to take that next big step during the outdoor season to be one of the top four teams to return to the podium. We’ve had success in recent years to do that.”

Vernell Brown and Tramell Jones

The SW Florida Express participated in a big 7v7 tournament yesterday.
National analysts from another network reviewed a few players who popped for them.
They just gushed over Vernell Brown. Fish has always given him high praise. There was a lot of
WR talent, incl Ffrench on his own team, but Brown was the one they couldn't say enough good
things about. He just jumped to the top of my wish list. Apparently, OSU is gaining some real traction with him.
They also gushed to a lesser degree about Tramell Jones who QBed the SWFE to a 3-0 record on the day.

Softball FSU softball defeats Purdue, Western Michigan in FGCU tournament

FSU sports information:

The No. 16 Florida State softball team (14-5) picked up two wins over Purdue and Western Michigan on Saturday at the FGCU Spring Break Classic in Fort Myers, Florida. FSU defeated the Boilermakers 15-9 in game one and took down the Broncos 6-2 in game two.

Game One vs. Purdue
FSU needed their largest comeback in four years to take down the Boilermakers in a game that saw 24 combined runs between the two teams. As the designated road team, the Seminoles took the batter's box first and Jaysoni Beachum hit her fifth home run in six games to put the Noles up 1-0 in the top of the first. Much like yesterday's game between the two teams, the Boilermakers put up a crooked number in the first and took a 6-1 lead into the second inning.

FSU quickly cut into the lead as Hallie Wacaser hit a leadoff single, and Amaya Ross smacked a home run to center field to make it 6-3. FSU continued to put pressure on the Boilermakers as Katie Dack drew a walk to bring up Devyn Flaherty. Flaherty hit a ground ball to the shortstop, but the throw went wild to allow Dack to advance to third. The Seminoles then put on a double steal, and Dack scored on the throw to second to try to catch Flaherty. Kalei Harding singled up the middle to score Flaherty to pull the Noles within one going into the bottom of the second.

The Seminole offense continued to produce as Ross drew a walk in the top of the third to put a baserunner on for the Noles. After Ross stole her 13th base of the season, Flaherty singled up the middle for her eighth RBI of the season to tie the game.

Beachum and Harding led off the fourth inning with back-to-back walks, and Michaela Edenfield continued her stellar season with a RBI single to give the Noles the lead. Isa Torres hit a fly ball out to right allowing Harding to score to give the Noles an 8-6 lead.

A couple of walks and an infield single loaded the bases for Harding in the fifth inning, and she got the job done as she reached on a fielder's choice to score Flaherty. Torres then reached on an error allowing Belviy to score to give the Noles a four-run cushion.

Back-to-back singles from Ross and Kennedy Harp got the Noles started in the top of the sixth, and Kaley Mudge earned a sacrifice fly to score Harp. Beachum then picked up her second RBI of the day to score Flaherty, and Harding doubled to give the Noles a 13-6 lead.

Harp hit her first career home run in the top of the seventh to give the Noles a 15-6 lead heading into the bottom half of the seventh. Purdue scored three in the bottom of the seventh, but Mimi Gooden was able to close out the game.

Makenna Reid entered the circle for Ashtyn Danley in the bottom of the first and had her best outing of the season. Reid went 5.1 innings and allowed just one hit while striking out a season-high seven batters. Reid's seven strikeouts were her second-most as a Seminole. Reid was credited with the win to improve to 3-0 on the year.

The Seminoles scored in every single inning against the Boilermakers with nine different Seminoles recording a hit. Beachum, Harding, Ross and Harp each had multiple hits.

FSU's five-run comeback was the largest come back since Feb. 7, 2020, when the Seminoles were down 7-1 to Alabama and came back to win 8-7.

Game Two vs. Western Michigan
Offense was hard to come by for the Noles in the second game of the day against Western Michigan, but FSU was able to take advantage of five errors from the Broncos to secure a 6-2 win.

Neither team was able to put any runs across in the first two innings. FSU had a great chance in the bottom of the second inning when they loaded the bases but a hard line out to third base ended the inning.

FSU struck first in the third as Beachum drew a leadoff walk. Annie Potter ran for Beachum and immediately stole second and advanced to third on a bad throw. Potter would score on a ground ball from Harding to give the Noles a 1-0 lead.

The Broncos responded with two runs of their own in the top of the fourth, but their lead did not last for long as the Seminoles put two runs on the board in the fourth inning. Ross started the inning by reaching on an error. Ross then stole second and was able to advance all the way to home thanks to a couple of throwing errors by the Broncos. Flaherty then hit a double, stole third and scored on a Mudge groundout to give the Noles the lead.

After Allison Royalty retired the side in order in the top of the fifth, Edenfield hit her team-leading seventh home run of the season to extend the lead to 4-2.

Katie Dack reached base on a swinging strikeout out the pitch sailed high allowing Dack to take first. Flaherty drew a walk, and Mudge picked up another RBI on a fielder's choice as Harp scampered home. FSU added one more run on a sacrifice fly from Harding allowing Flaherty to score.

Royalty struck out the side in the top of the seventh to end the game. Royalty went all seven innings and allowed just one earned run while striking out a season high seven batters. It was the first time in her career that Royalty had pitched all seven innings.

FSU will round out the FGCU Spring Break Classic tomorrow when they take on FGCU at 3 p.m. on ESPN+.

FSU beach volleyball improves to 11-0

Senior Caitlin Moon and graduate student Kaeli Crews earned a hard-fought victory on court five, defeating Denisse Morgenstern and Madie Lichty in a three-set thriller. The final set came down to the wire with the Seminoles winning 16-14.

The Seminoles then faced FGCU, which proved to be a challenge. Madison Binkley and McKenna Flaherty emerged victorious on court five in three sets, with a monstrous block from Binkley sealing the 16-14 win. Then on court one, All-American Maddie Anderson and Skyler Germann won the duel for the Noles in three sets, with the third set finishing 31-29.

NC State defeats tired FSU in ACC Tournament semifinal

FSU sports information:

Aziaha James scored 23 points, Mimi Collins added 17 points and 13 rebounds and No. 10 North Carolina State beat Florida State on 69-43 Saturday to advance to the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game for the fourth time in five seasons.

NC State outrebounded Florida State 58-32 and held the Seminoles to 25 percent shooting from the field.

The Wolfpack (27-5) will face No. 14 Notre Dame in Sunday’s championship game. The fourth-seeded Irish hammered defending tournament champion and 11th-ranked Virginia Tech, playing without three-time ACC player of the year Elizabeth Kitley, 82-53 in the earlier game.

Ta'Naya Latson had 16 points for Florida State (26-6), which will now await its NCAA Tournament seeding.

The Wolfpack won the ACC title in 2020, 2021 and 2002 but failed to reach the title game last season.

Saniya Rivers' 3-pointer just two minutes in gave the Wolfpack a 6-5 lead they would never relinquish.

NC State pushed its lead to 20-11 after the first quarter behind 11 points from Collins, then extended the lead to 15 after James buried a 3-pointer from the left wing in the closing seconds of the first half. That momentum carried over to the second half, with Rivers knocking down a jumper at the end of the third quarter to give the Wolfpack a 50-29 lead.

Notes / updates: FSU women's hoops vs. NC State (Sat, 2:30 p.m.)

The sixth-seeded Florida State women’s basketball team looks to clinch its third trip to an ACC Championship game as it faces No. 2 seed NC State in Saturday’s ACC Semifinals (2:30 p.m. on ACC Network). FSU has made championship game appearances in 2015 and 2020.

Sophomore Ta’Niya Latson is averaging 22.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and is shooting 53.3 percent (16-of-30) in FSU’s first two ACC Tournament games. She led FSU with 25 points in its 78-65 ACC Quarterfinal win vs. No. 3 seed Syracuse.

FSU and NC State play for the second time this season, with the first meeting resulting in an 88-80 overtime win by the Wolfpack at Reynolds Coliseum. Latson led the Seminoles with 30 points in that tightly-contested game.

Junior forward Makayla Timpson is averaging 16.0 points and 15.5 rebounds in the ACC Tournament so far. She became FSU’s single-season double-doubles record holder in the ACC second round vs. Wake Forest, picking up her 16th of the season. She added 10 points and a career-high 18 rebounds vs. Syracuse to move to 17 double-doubles this season.

Timpson now has 84 blocked shots this season. She is tied with former player Jacinta Monroe for the most blocks in a single season at FSU, needing one more to set the single-season program record.

Davis earned silver in the men’s long jump with a measurement of 8.20m, capturing his third consecutive first-team All-America honor in the event for his indoor career. Jordan Turner placed 13th with a leap of 7.31m, earning second-team All-America.

“I’m really proud of Jeremiah,” said FSU track and field head coach Bob Braman. “He had his best competition of the year and gave himself a chance for a national title. He will compete in the triple jump tomorrow, where he’s one of the favorites to win. Jordan had two jumps that would have placed in the top five, but they resulted in fouls.”

For the first time since 2019, two Seminoles competed in women’s 60-meters on the national stage. Shenese Walker punched her ticket to the final round on Saturday with the eighth-fastest overall time at 7.23.

Dajaz DeFrand placed behind Walker in ninth, nearly missing the final with a time of 7.24. DeFrand capped off her weekend placing 11th in the 200 with a time of 23.08, earning second-team All-America.

“Strong races for both Shenese and Dajaz in the 60-meter,” Braman added. “Dajaz missed qualifying by one spot, but still a good season for her in the 60. I’m excited to see what Shenese does in the finals tomorrow.”

The 19th ranked men’s team currently stands in eighth place with eight points. Davis will compete in the triple jump on Saturday and David Mullarkey will race the 3,000, looking to add to the team total.

Football Jordan Travis at NFL Combine: 'I got out of my boot about a week ago'

We'll have more from Jordan Travis later but he's now out of the boot and has a timeline in mind:

"I got out of my boot about a week ago. It’s pretty special. I’m so thankful. I wake up every single day and look down at my shoes. I’m so grateful. It’s been a journey for sure. My family is helping me get through it. I should be ready by May. That’s my goal – May, June."
