Here’s a rundown of the Pro Football Focus (PFF) grades from FSU’s win at North Carolina. PFF does not allow us to post grades for all the players, so we just cover the high and lowlights. But if you have a question about a specific player, just ask and I’ll be happy to provide that info.
Overall Team Grades:
Top Mark: Jordan Travis was extremely efficient in the passing game completing 11-of-13 and throwing for three TDs. So, it’s not surprising that FSU’s passing grade was a season-high 90.3. That’s the highest mark since the game vs. Boston College in 2019.
Receiving (81.9) and rush (83.7) both came in with season-high grades.
Low Mark: Nothing was awful but run-blocking came in with a surprisingly low mark at 51.9. That’s a typical grade for this season but thought it would be higher with FSU running for 254 yards and averaging 5.8 YPC. The pass-rush was also disappointing. The defense finished with one sack and 11 pressures on 39 drop-backs. Grade – 58.7
Other: Florida State’s much maligned secondary did a nice job holding UNC’s Sam Howell in check. The unit turned in a season-high mark of 69.8.
Passing:
As noted above, Jordan Travis was very efficient and played a mistake-free game. He completed 11-of-13 with three passing TDs, two rushing TDs and threw for 145 yards. Travis turned in a gaudy 90.3 passing grade, and an amazing overall offensive grade of 93.4. How good was his offensive score? It tied for No. 1 in the entire country this week for all FBS and FCS starting QBs!
Rushing:
Jordan Travis was a major part of the ground game rushing for 121 yards and had a 84.3 run grade.
Treshaun Ward also had a nice outing rushing for 77 yards on 12 carries. Rush grade – 79.2
Jashaun Corbin rushed for 52 yards on 13 carries. Rush grade - 64.0.
Receiving:
It was a nice bounce-back game for Florida State’s wide receivers, who have been struggling all season.
Keyshawn Helton had three catches for 71 yards. He had a team-high receiving grade of 87.9. That’s by far the highest mark of his career.
Ontaria Wilson redeemed himself after an awful outing vs. Syracuse, catching two for 38 yards, and two TDs. Grade – 73.9.
Treshaun Ward caught a couple passes out of the backfield. 77.8 receiving grade.
Blocking:
Florida State did not surrender a sack on Saturday. UNC’s defense managed only four pressures on 16 drop-backs.
Dillan Gibbons (83.8) and Maurice Smith (80.7) led the way blocking for the pass with both coming in with excellent grades above 80. Neither Robert Scott Jr. (51.8) nor Baveon Johnson (50.2), who came in off the bench, did well pass-blocking. Scott have up two pressures, and Johnson one.
As I mentioned above, the run-blocking grades were surprisingly low. Scott did well with a grade of 66.2 but nobody else stood out. The other starters/major contributors did nothing special per PFF: Dillan Gibbons (55.8), Devontay Love-Taylor (55.6), Darius Washington (53.4), Baveon Johnson (53.0).
The offensive line was called for two penalties - Washington and Gibbons.
Defense:
Led by Amari Gainer, who had his highest grade since the 2019 season at 80.8, a handful of defenders finished with high marks - Jarrian Jones (77.7) Fabien Lovett (73.3) Jarvis Brownlee Jr. (70.3). Gainer (80.9), Jammie Robinson (86.5), DJ Lundy (77.7) and Jones (77.9) all stood out with high tackle grades.
Nobody on defense had an overall grade below 50, but a few players did struggle tackling. Travis Jay (37.7) Sidney Williams (32.3) Malcolm Ray (29.1) Akeem Dent (27.6) all had substandard marks in this department. According to PFF, Williams missed a team-high four tackles.
Gainer was the only defender with an above average pass-rush grade at 76.5.
Jarrian Jones, who recorded a key interception, led FSU with a team-high 77.8 cover grade. Jones was targeted five times but gave up just two catches for 14 yards. Linebacker Amari Gainer (71.6) and DB Jarvis Brownlee Jr. (70.1) also did well. The lowest coverage grade was 52.8 by Travis Jay.
