11:40 — Norvell video up soon. He did say Robert Scott practiced some today.

10:40 -- Had to do a double take...Pokey leapt up on a deep fade and went up with one hand and snagged it for an impressive catch right before the 20th period ended.

10:30 -- Malik McClain had a nice catch near the boundary, tapping his toes to get the completion

10:20 -- Looks like they're sticking with scout team work so updates might be drying up but we'll have interviews around 11:30 a.m. and sprinkle anything in update-worthy in the interim.

10:10 -- Logging in 1-on-1 WR/DB work; tough sledding for receivers with drops early on but some big plays did materialize. Andrew Parchment and Bryan Robinson both had deep ball catches and Malik McClain made a nice diving catch

9:50 -- When they went outside, heavy focus on fundamentals. Then they did come together for some 11-on-11.

Milton's drive was very good. He hit McClain for a gain of 10-15. Then Corbin had a run for about 10. The next run for Douglas didn't go anywhere. Then Milton hit Parchment for a touchdown of about 45 yards. Nice route and pass.

Purdy's drive started with a big run for D.J. Williams. Good to see him involved ... haven't seen him flash much in practice, and he hasn't been getting on the field. His next run got stuffed in the backfield by Josh Farmer. Then after one more run, Purdy overthrew Helton and Shyheim Brown dropped what should have been a pick.

------

9:20 -- During the two-minute drill, Milton took the first series. Corbin had a couple of decent runs, and Milton threw a good backshoulder pass to Andrew Parchment, but he couldn't make the catch. DB had good coverage. Think it was Dotson, but not sure.

Purdy took the second series but didn't get very far. Hit a short pass to Jordan Wilson, then there was a run that didn't go anywhere. And he was hurried on the next two plays and had to throw it away.

Scouts here today from the Bengals, Texans and I think Steelers.

8:52 — They have refs out here today. Norvell said that was something they might do to cut down on penalties.

Good morning!

Heading out to FSU football practice. Will have some updates around 9:30 a.m.

FSU follows footsteps of UF…

So..

Look at our respective programs after our two top tier coaches left (Jimbo and Urban).

UF:
Muschamp (well known, up and coming)
McElwain (over performer at lower level college)
Mullen (proven experience and PAID)

FSU:
Taggert(well known, up and coming)
Norvell(over performer at lower level college)

Not sure who our Mullen will be.. but .. god willing.. we are one coach away from being back. Hurts to think how far we’ve fallen. An expensive lesson and wish we would have started with a proven coach and paid him like the top program we claim to be..

Also sucks to know we are getting close to the point where it would have been cheaper to pay jimbo 8 mil a year.. once we cut Norvell.. it woulda been cheaper.

tired of trying these unproven, lower level coaches. We need to pull a Mullen, unfortunately, we are probably a few years from being able to do that.

just double the amount u normally drink on a Saturday and we will make it through this together :)

Norvell compared to other 2020 head coaching hires

Including 2019 as a comparison so that we see the record and SP+ ranking of the team each coach inherited... I will say that Norvell's 69 in SP+ seems better but if I remember correctly, Bill Connelly's formula keeps around pre-season ranking predictions through week 4. Which shows for Washington at 19 even after being 1-2 and losing to Montana. But the other top 4 of Kiffin, Pittman, Aranda, Tucker have good starts (so far) in year two. USA Today Sagarin has FSU at 107. So it will be interesting to see if what SP+ has after weeks 4 and 5 for FSU when the preseason formula stops counting.

Take on Taggart and Norvell

Clearly neither has been up to job. But I am wondering if we are seeing something wrong. Maybe it’s true that they didn’t do it here, but we labelled WT TWOAT and now many are saying MN is challenging the role.

But I am wondering if the real issue is that FSU is so much worse than we thought. I mean in terms of culture and focus and admin and just the leftovers from the crumbling Jimbo mess.

Taggart came in and publicly identified a lot of important stuff. Seemed it was being addressed. Remember the APR stuff? Taggart said all the right stuff. Discipline? He was the damn savior. Then crap. MN comes in. Much of the same. He’s got the culture. He’s got the discipline. He’s got the youth thing. And crap.

Anyone think maybe they aren’t ho to this not because they suck, but because we’re so far back now that there are only a few people who even would have a chance. And they may not have interest. Could we wee just cycle people through here for years because there just aren’t options to actually fix this.

(9/22/21): Make or break at QB, perceived talent gap, "RenEx"

(3:00) Give up on McKenzie. Give up? Has he had a true chance?

(8:00) Some cracks in Norvell's quite reserved attitude?

(13:00) QB issues, injured OL, subpar WR explains the struggles -- or does it?

(25:00) Too soon to criticize player development?

(37:00) One e-mailer is done with Norvell...and makes some fair points, but....

(53:00) Just find a great QB already and eveyrthing will be fixed

(1:00:00) If this season ends as poorly as it's started, what's the play for 2022 and beyond?

The 2 drives at the end of

The 3rd quarter and start of 4th show the potential in this offense. Yes the 4th down call was bad but if it worked and we score it's 35-21. We sack Hartman and stop wake then go right down the field with the best drive by Milton so far this year. He fumbles going into the end zone unfortunately. Could have been a 35-28 game. My point is we need more of those drives they were beautiful (without the fumble and 4th down failure of course). That is what I expect to see this weekend.

"Renegade Express": Louisville Week

zx4OZlIl.jpg

It's Louisville Week or Louavull Week in some corners. What's it gonna take to right the ship soon? A blocked punt, a pick-six, a small miracle? Have there been any bright spots to take from the last two weeks and throw in the knapsack as we scale out of the pit of despair? Any encouragement from the words shared during Monday's press conferences? Voice your concerns, causes for optimism, cautious hopes, points of contention...whatever helps ease the pain. We're here for you. See you on the ponies, friends.

I think Vegas has it right

After seeing us on Saturday I couldn't wait to see the spread for the UL game. Could not believe it was 2 or 3 in favor of UL. Although it's a small sample size in practice, it looks like MM is improving in the passing game and could come out firing with a good run game. UL's defense is certainly vulnerable but it's the D and giving up the chunk plays that we have to be concerned about. That said, this one looks like a toss up with a high scoring game. I don't see this being a slam dunk as I did on Sunday.

Just please stick to this against UL

Need to stick to one plan this Saturday. We know we are terrible at Pass Pro, and our QB's have no consistent chemistry with the WR's (and that's putting it nicely).

FSU is #5 in rushing offense in the ACC, at 186 yards/game.

UL is #12 in rushing defense in the ACC, giving up 162 yards/game.

Sacks are killing us. Even Jordan is getting sacked WAY more than last year.

Pick one QB and attempt no more than 20 passes. Otherwise, run it hard with Corbin and Ward. And don't panic and completely change the plan (and QB) if UL stops the run early. It's ok to punt and win the field position battle. Wear them down and we should rush for 250 yards like we did against ND.

I mean, what's the alternative? Let Milton throw the ball 50 times to WR's and TE's who are not making plays? Run the RPO with Jordan? I think he's rushed for a single first down in 3 games.

What do we do well on offense?

I keep hearing and reading that we have to establish our identity on offense. Find what we do well and stick to it.

The problem I see is that I can’t name one thing we do well. We clearly don’t have a passing game except for a few shot plays. Corbin and Ward are okay, and maybe that’s the foundation from here. But our running game overall is hit and miss. Lots of possessions have started and died trying to establish the run over the last 5 years.

We don’t really do anything well on offense. And haven’t since 2016. But maybe we just commit to the run and roll with the fact that in establishing this identity we will be bad and continue to lose games. But in committing to the run, we force our team to adopt a lunch pail mentality as a way to build up from a solid foundation.

I think this is a risky but necessary strategy. Unless and until we build up at least an average OL, we will keep kicking the rebuild can down the road. We’ve had one of the worst OLs in all of college football since 2016. Those days must end before we can sniff competency.
