Awful That the Noles Suck When We Should be Celebrating Bobby

What depresses me the most about the Noles' most recent chapter of suckage is its TIMING.

We recently lost Bobby Bowden, the greatest-ever representative and ambassador of FSU. I thought maybe the Noles could halfway duplicate 1976 -- Bobby's first year here -- where they showed heart, promise and IMPROVEMENT. 1976 was not a great season, record-wise, but you could SEE AND FEEL THE TIDE CHANGING. Bobby lit a very tangible fire in Tallahassee those 45 years ago. He gave us hope. What incredible symmetry if the 2021 Noles could somehow do the same (or even something colorably close). What a wonderful tribute if the Bowden family could "feel" and celebrate the same FSU resurgence that Bobby started decades ago.

Instead, the Noles -- coached by guys making HUGE MULTIPLES of the mere $35,000 Bobby made in 1976 -- publicly humiliate themselves and our great university. Losing to complete chumps like JSU and Wake. What in the absolute hell has happened to us?? Show some pride. This is humiliating. Norvell gets up and spews soaring rhetoric about Bobby's "legacy." Shut the hell up and get this fixed. I hate how the current program-wide incompetence distracts from Bobby's national remembrance.

Norvell post-game

Sick and tired of the pandering, the swaying back and forth, looking around like a lost puppy… stand up there with some conviction. Corey asked about the wildcat and we got “we had it as a secondary plan”, like wtf does that mean? Him trying to please everybody (QB’s/players, his assistants, fans/media, admin) helps nobody! You saw it last year with the Marv situation, you see it this year with older players playing over more talented but inexperienced younger players, the constant qb switching, the inconsistent play calling.

Show us this is an offense that is “built for playmakers”. Show us you can give us a defense that won’t give up an automatic 7 yards every play and 30+ points a game. All we’ve got since he’s been hired is lip service.

Norvell needs to grow a pair and own it.

7 Turnovers has become "5 turnovers"

Both Norvell & Dillingham referred to having 6 turnovers against Wake, but both dismiss the hail mary, then say we had 5 turnovers. My beef isn't with dismissing the hail mary; I actually agree that's not really a turnover unless it's returned for a TD.

That said, you know what IS a turnover? Failing a 4th down attempt. Literally called a turnover on downs. And I understand the box score doesn't call it an turnover (for some reason, really they should put INT/FUM/DOWNS in the box score), but if we're taking liberties as to what is and what isn't, THAT is a turnover. So every time these coaches referenced 6 turnovers being 5, I wish I could be there to remind them they actually had 7 turnovers.

Why do we make every QB look like a Heisman candidate?

This goes back to the Charles Kelly days too.

FSU teams of the 1990s used to feast on opposing QBs. If a team started a back up QB they almost definitely went down with an injury. Some quit football after the game vs our Noles defense.

Flash forward from about 6 years ago to now. Every QB practically has a career game vs our D.

Remeber the Samford QB a coupe of years ago? How about last week vs Wake. Was I the only one wishing he was on our team?

This has to stop if we ever plan on being relevant again.

Dillingham Presser

I know it’s not popular to be positive right now, and believe me there’s not much. I’m as mad as anyone. We have to remember how young Dillingham is. He is still learning and I believe this year is a great learning experience for him as this is probably the most adversity he has faced in his young career. He talks about some of the mistakes in game planning he made, which also sheds l light on just how big of a loss Robert Scott and Maurice Smith have been. He needed to change his whole game plan based on them being out. He can do things he’s been successful at his entire career. I really do think this guy is going through some growing pains and while it sucks for now…he could really learn and become something special on the backside of this.

Norvell starts off talking about the "disappointing" start to the season. Said they've had a lot of self-inflicted issues that are preventing team from having success. Talked about the turnovers on offense and short-yardage issues.

Those things are preventing them from success.

Said a lot of things showing up in games aren't showing up in practice. Said the team is learning a lot of "painful lessons" right now. His message to the team is to learn from that pain and use it to advantage going forward.

Said the coaches are evaluating everything. Trying to make sure they put players in best position to have success.

On coaching calls -- said there were some good calls that didn't succeed, and also some bad calls.

Continuing to learn the identity of this team. Seen some positives. Have to build on those.

Says there's a belief from the players in what they're trying to do. Doesn't think the players are questioning direction. They just need to learn lessons.

On penalties ... asked if they need to have more officials at practice. Says biggest problem is focus penalties. There was a reduction in alignment penalties this week. Says the roughing-punter and personal foul out of bounds were judgment calls. The special teams penalties were "technique" issues. Have to keep working on those.

On short-yardage problems -- Says there have been different reasons. In a few, players need to trust their fundamentals. Said there were a few calls they could question.

On the play where he made Jordan Travis get down when coming off the field. Said the official told Jordan he needed to come out of the game. Norvell said he's never had an official do that before.

Said they're evaluating Jordan's health as the week goes on. Missed some practice time last week too, which hasn't helped.

Depleted offensive line -- Says the continuity is important and didn't have that last week. Thought they might have a couple guys back but didn't get them.

On offense playcalling -- Says he's always very involved. Has a ton of confidence in Dillingham. Said there were some great calls that didn't get executed. But said they're always evaluating.

On players' confidence ... says they believe in program. He can see it in practices and meetings. And when the coaches make a bad call, they tell the players that. They don't blame everything on the players.

Said he's still very confident in this team and what they're going to do. And he's not looking down the road, but right now. This week.

On defense giving up long pass plays ... says they want to be aggressive, but needs to make sure the players understand the situations and what each defense is trying to accomplish. What they're trying to take away. But have to stop giving up those long passes.

On Louisville ... one of best running games they'll see. Very resilient team, as shown last week. Dynamic QB. Defense is attack style. They're gonna bring pressure from everywhere. We have to play clean disciplined football. They will make us pay for mistakes. Says it will be a physical game. Need to be better in special teams.

That's a wrap from Norvell. As you can tell, I'm doing the transcribing instead of Corey. So not as detailed. Video will be up soon.

Next up should be OC Kenny Dillingham.

Dillingham starts by talking about offensive rhythm. Says they've hurt themselves with mistakes on opening drives. Penalties earlier and then a turnover this week. Says the coaches are looking at some creative things to help spring big plays.

On the QBs -- said they each have different skill sets. Wanted to see both early and go with hot hand. Evaluating what to do from here. Brought up Jordan's availability as an issue last couple weeks.

Details playcalling. Says he and Norvell have a lot that is scripted, especially early in each half and then also in different situations -- like top third-down calls etc. Said he definitely takes responsibility of it not being successful. Only having 52 plays was a huge problem. Killed selves with turnovers.

On players' mindset -- Said the kids are staying true to the process. There's no change. Keeping with process of hard work. Sunday was one of best Sunday practices.

Haven't established an identity. Part of the problem has been not having continuity on the OL and QBs not always being available.

On not being able to run the ball better, says Wake showed a defense that they hadn't typically run. Basically played "man free" and challenged FSU to win one-on-one matchups -- on the line and at skill positions. Said he needs to do a better job of scheming guys open so they don't have to win those individual battles.

Was asked about keeping things simpler, said they need to. But added that limits the ability to adjust in games.

Fuller up next.

Fuller

Fuller asked about big pass plays. Says they're trying to address it. Usually go back to technique. Offenses shouldn't be able to run in a straight line and score a TD. On the early long pass, said the DB gave too much of a free release and got beat.

On the DBs ... have seen guys play better in practice. But if it's not showing up in games, have to ask himself if they are asking too much. Are they asking players to do things they can't do? Looking at that.

On effort -- For the most part, thinks they fought throughout -- especially in sudden change situations where defense was put in bad spot. At the end of the day, gave up 35 points. So hard to feel good about it, but did think the players responded with right attitude when put in tough positions.

On Louisville, Cunningham is the most mobile QB they've faced. And can he do enough with his arm to create challenges. One of the best QBs in the ACC.

On Jermaine Johnson -- Says he loves football, practices hard and plays hard. Has a high expectation for himself and that's spreading to other players. Said McLendon, Lovett and others are increasing their level of play, and he thinks Johnson has been key to that. He still has better football in him too.

Papuchis

Papuchis -- on penalties on returns. Said the blocks in the back are inexcusable. On the call for roughing the punter, says the player did make a mistake in technique that probably led to the call. He should have used only his inside hand to block, but also used his outside hand, which caused his body to turn and look like there might be candidate.

On Jermaine Johnson -- says he's a great combination of high talent and relentless worker. Plays extremely hard, which leads to high production.

On the DE depth -- happy with how far McLendon and Quashon have come. Thinks they're really coming around and will help.

On return game -- says they've gotten close to springing a couple of long ones, but either had one missed block or a returner missed the seam. Thinks they're getting close, but said "close doesn't cut it." Need to get all 11 guys executing and they can spring one.

That's it for now. We'll have more coming.
