FSU women's tennis routs No. 14 Duke

FSU sports information:

The Florida State women’s tennis team (5-4, 1-1 ACC) earns its first ranked victory of the season as the Seminoles won 6-1 against No. 14 Duke (6-4, 0-2 ACC) at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center on Sunday.

“We fired on all cylinders today and took control of the match after the doubles point and never let up,” FSU coach Jennifer Hyde said. “It is hard to do, especially against a very good Duke team, and I am so glad we gave that effort today.”

Florida State started off strong as Ellie Schoppe and Kristyna Lavickova won 7-6 (4) at No. 2 doubles. Anna Arkadianou and Vic Allen followed by winning 7-6 (1) at No. 1 doubles to secure the doubles point and take the early 1-0 lead.

The Seminoles continued the momentum as they won five of their first sets and tacked onto their lead as sophomore Millie Bissett won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4 singles.

Duke responded with a win at No. 5 singles to cut the deficit.

Florida State’s Anna Arkadianou earned an incredible 6-1, 6-1 win over the 76th-ranked Katie Codd put the Seminoles ahead 3-1.

Senior Ellie Schoppe clinched the match as she defeated No. 80 Shavit Kimchi 6-2, 7-5. The Seminoles did not stop there as Laura Putz won 7-5, 6-1 and Allen won 6-1, 7-5 to conclude the day.

Sunday’s victory was FSU’s highest-ranked win since defeated No. 10 Duke 4-2 on March 25, 2022.

Very Interesting / Big Advantage..

Just came across something interesting. Saw where Tenn. and UVA just won their preliminary injunction against the NCAA!

Synopsis - Basically Booster Funded NIL collectives can now communicate with HS / Portal recruits. First and only 2 schools so far.

I don’t know how anyone else feels about this. IMO this is one of the main ingredients to destroy CFB. Truthfully this has the potential to be one of the main pillars/factors that eventually ruins CFB itself!

It’s an absolute MUST there has to be a way to close just a lil bit of Pandora’s box that’s busted WIDE OPEN with just the NILs, no caps, free for all transfers ect. For one these kids have no business making the astronomical amounts of money to play CFB. Let’s be real here a part of the NIL $ should be mandated that it be used to pay for all of their schooling, school supplies/books, housing, food, ect. Then take the money that has been allocated to football scholarships and disperse them equally across every sport. Allow some of these baseball / softball players to get full scholly because they truthfully always come in at most 26% - 30% scholarship and the vast majority are well below.

All athletes receiving NIL money should be mandated to take certain classes as well as have X amount to allow their money to 2x or whatever and have X amount per month or whatever to use. I know many will totally disagree. However, you stop and put into perspective where probably 80% - 90% of these athletes come from this is def smart. Many are far to immature, do not come from a home with good guidance ect to have the access to this much money. Having classes to teach, people to advise them within the school on how to use/spend/invest their money , so while they are playing their money is making money. I believe it’s less than 5% of D1 players make it big time and/or just make it in just to find out it doesn’t support you enough financially. I mean NFL is an acronym that means Not For Long! Now you have basically kids out on their own now with all this money spending money on Lambos, Ferraris, Bugatti, ect., jewelry, you name it! Also, don’t think these kids don’t have HUGE TARGETS on them that attracts the ones you don’t want too!
Have posted in a while so I figured I’d come in swinging! Lol
End of rant!

FSU 63 Clemson 74 The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

FSU 63 Clemson 74 The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

The Good

Baba Miller who had a nice game offensively (changed some shots on defense too) with 12 points on 5 of 8 from the floor including 2 of 3 from the arc. Miller added 6 boards as well.

Jamir Watkins leading the Seminoles with 18 points and 8 rebounds.

Primo Spears who made it back to the floor after missing one game and was essentially the bench scoring 16 points. Jaylen Gainey was the only other reserve to score with just two points.

Leonard Hamilton switching up his defenses in particular to a matchup zone that brought the Seminoles to within five, 58-53, with 6:05 to play. FSU had trailed by as many as sixteen, 53-37, before Hamilton began changing up his defense that help send the 'Noles on a 9-0 run. Clemson has a number of games this season where the Tigers have given away leads. Unfortunately it was not to be in this game as the margin proved to be too much for FSU to overcome.

Plays of the game: Spears with the steal going coast to coast for the fast break lay up, 26-30. Miller with a spin move into the lane for the slam dunk, 30-38. Jalen Warley with the alley oop to Jaylen Gainey and the slam dunk, 35-45. Watkins drive in for the lay up off the glass, 57-63.

The Bad

After being swept in the season series, FSU falls to 14-13 overall, 8-8 ACC. Coming into the game, FSU had lost to Clemson three straight games. Make that four straight. The 'Noles have not won at LIttlejohn (not to be confused with Robin Hood) since early 2019 and have beaten the Tigers just twice in the last nine games.

FSU led 9-8 with 14:16 remaining in the first half. It was the last lead the 'Noles would have.

Chandler Jackson could not follow up on his performance against Boston College shooting Oh for five.

Clemson's FT prowess. The Tigers who are known as a physical team shot 24-30 (80%) from the charity stripe including Joseph Girard (game high 24 pts) who was 10-10 and now has converted 50 straight freebies. FSU was 11-15 (73%) and unable to draw fouls especially in the first 12 minutes of the game.

With two fouls on PJ Hall early in the first half, a lot of Clemson's defense in the paint was on the bench. So what did FSU do? They launched seven three pointers instead of attacking the rim. OK, I know that Clemson had nine blocked shots in the game and Hall is not the only eraser back there. But just to jack up threes (btw, FSU made just one of those attempts) is just not smart basketball.

The Ugly

The beginning of the game was a mess with FSU committing four straight turnovers. And when they were not turning the ball over, they were missing shots. The offset was Clemson had as many miscues albeit not consecutive and the Seminoles found themselves behind by only five points.

If you are looking for a good example of game management, this would NOT be it. Miller gets the defensive rebound with 34 second left in the half. Spears brings the ball up. You would think leaving as little time on the clock as possible would be a high priority. Apparently not for Spears as he jacked up a jumper with 13 seconds on the clock. With more than enough time left, Chase Hunter gets left unguarded and promptly nails a three pointer at the buzzer giving the Tigers a 38-28 lead to the locker room.

And speaking of Chase Hunter, the Red Sea did not part as wide as the Seminole defense did for Hunter as he drove easily to the rim for the slam dunk to give CU a 60-53 lead.

Here's a surprise, the 'Noles shot 4-19 (21%) from the arc. They almost never shoot that poorly from back there.

Primo with a beautiful cross court pass that was snagged by ............. Brad Brownell. Somehow I do not think that was the intended target.

And just when you wanted and needed Primo to take the shot, he turned down the lay up and kicked it out to Chauncey Wiggins. BTW, Wiggins is not a member of the FSU team.

Apparently Watkins and Hall were having a bit of a back and forth all game long as evidenced by the scrum late in the game when Hall elbowed Watkins and Watkins reciprocated by pushing Hall in the back. Both picked up technical fouls. What Hall won't be picking up is an Academy Award for that acting job he did after Jamir pushed him.

Up Next

FSU returns home to take on NC State on Tuesday at 9 PM (don't these schedule makers know people go to work the next day??) The game will be broadcast on The Deuce. The Wolfpack (17-10, 9-7) are 3-3 over their last six games most recently beating Boston College earlier today 81-70. NC State is led by D.J. Horne with 17.3 ppg and is 44% from behind the arc.

Softball FSU softball sweeps Nicholls

FSU sports information:

The No. 11 Florida State softball team (11-3) used a walk-off single from Michaela Edenfield in a come-from-behind win to defeat Nicholls 5-4 in game one and cruised to an 8-0 victory in five innings in game two to finish the Dugout Club Classic with a 6-0 record.

Game One

The Seminoles used some late game heroics to prevail in game one after trailing in three separate occasion to defeat the pesky Colonels 5-4.

Nicholls struck first with a solo home run in the top of the first, but FSU responded as the freshman duo of Isa Torres and Jaysoni Beachum got the scoring going for the Seminoles. Torres led off the inning with a single and advanced to third on back-to-back groundouts. Beachum stepped up and delivered a two-out double to score Torres to tie the game at one.

Nicholls hit a two-run home run in the top of the third to retake the lead, but Makenna Reid responded by sitting down seven consecutive batters to keep the Colonels in check to give the offense a chance. The offense delivered in the bottom of the fifth as Jahni Kerr led off the inning with a single. Kalei Harding reached on a fielder's choice, but throw to get Kerr out at second sailed high allowing Kerr to advance to third to put runners on the corners. Beachum struck again with a single to pick up her second RBI of the game to bring the Noles within one. Back-to-back two-out walks from Edenfield and Devyn Flaherty tied the game after five innings.

After a scoreless sixth inning, Nicholls hit their third home run of the game to take a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning.

Beachum reached on an error and was replaced on the base paths by Annie Potter who stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch to put her 60 feet away with one out. Hallie Wacaser continued her dominant week with a double to left field to score Potter. Edenfield then stepped in the box and took the 1-2 pitch into right field to end the game for her first walk-off of her career.

Makenna Reid (5.1 innings) and Allison Royalty (1.2 innings) combined to allow just five hits while recording five strikeouts. Royalty was credited with the win to improve to 4-1 on the year.

Game Two

It was the Jaysoni Beachum show in game two as the freshman hit two home runs and went 3-for-3 to lead the Seminoles to an 8-0 win in five innings.

Beachum started the scoring in the second inning with a solo home run that just snuck in the left foul pole to put the Noles up 1-0.

Amaya Ross kept the inning going for the Noles with a single up the middle then stole her 11th base of the year to move to second. She advanced to third on a groundout then Katie Dack singled through the right side to bring her home to give the Noles a 2-0 lead.

Kalei Harding was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the third to put a runner on base for the Noles and back-to-back singles from Beachum and Wacaser allowed Harding to score to make it 3-0. Ross earned another RBI on a fielder's choice to give FSU a comfortable 4-0 lead after three innings.

A pair of freshmen shined again in the bottom of the fourth inning as Torres hit a double down the left field line, and Kennedy Harp picked up her first career RBI on a triple to make it 5-0.

Beachum led off the bottom of the fifth inning with her second solo home run of the night, and after Ross recorded an infield single, Edenfield stepped in and launched her sixth home run of the season to end the game in walk-off fashion.

Allison Royalty earned the start in game two and was phenomenal as she threw a shutout while allowing just two hits while striking out four.

The Seminoles will head across the country next week for the Jane Sanders Classic in Eugene, Ore., where they will play four games in two days. FSU will play Mount St. Mary's and Maryland on Friday and No. 4 Washington and No. 24 Oregon on Saturday. The Maryland, Washington and Oregon games will all be streamed on https://pac-12.com/live/university-oregon-2.

Basketball Live Updates: FSU at Clemson (Saturday, 7:45 p.m.)

After a win earlier this week to snap its recent skid, the Florida State men's basketball team (14-12, 8-7 in ACC) will look to keep its winning ways going as a road underdog Saturday night at Clemson (18-8, 8-7). The game is set for a 7:45 p.m. tip on CW Network from Littlejohn Coliseum.

For FSU, it's a chance to avenge its 78-67 loss to the Tigers in Tallahassee just over a month ago back on Jan. 20. FSU leads the all-time series vs. Clemson 46-38, but is a 9.5-point road underdog for this matchup.

The good news for FSU is that CBS analyst Jon Rothstein reported this morning according to an FSU spokesperson that guard Darin Green Jr. is expected to again be available for Saturday's game after he missed Tuesday's 84-76 home win over Boston College. It remains unknown if FSU will have guard Primo Spears available for this game after he missed the last 1.5 games due to coach's decision.

I'll be sharing updates below from tonight's game once it gets underway.

Softball FSU dominates Charleston Southern in doubleheader

FSU sports information:

The No. 11 Florida State softball team (9-3) picked up two convincing wins over Charleston Southern (6-6) on Friday in a doubleheader in the Dugout Club Classic at JoAnne Graf Field. FSU defeated the Buccaneers 9-2 in game one and 9-1 in six innings in game two.

Game One
The Seminoles used a seven-run fourth inning and a complete pitching performance from Mimi Gooden and Emma Wilson to rout the Buccaneers 9-2 in game one on Friday.

The Buccaneers took advantage of an error and two passed balls in the first inning to put a run on the board. FSU tied it up in the bottom of the second as Amaya Ross earned a walk and beat out the throw at second on a fielder's choice. Michaela Edenfield then grounded out to third, and Ross put on the gas and went from second to home to tie the game.

After a scoreless third inning, Jaysoni Beachum got things started in the bottom of the fourth inning. Ross then hit her third triple in the last three games to bring Beachum home to regain the lead for the Noles. Ross would score when Flaherty reached on an error, and Edenfield walked to put two runners on for Hallie Wacaser. She delivered with a three-run home run, her second home run in as many games. Kaley Mudge was hit by a pitch and was relieved on the base paths by Autumn Belviy. Jahni Kerr hit a double in the left center gap to score Belviy, and Isa Torres immediately brought home Kerr on a single through the right side to give the Noles seven runs in the inning before an out was recorded.

Emma Wilson relieved Gooden in the fourth inning and got herself out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the fifth thanks to a great play from Annie Potter at shortstop that saved a couple of runs.

Makenna Reid came in in the sixth inning and closed the deal striking out three out of the six batters she faced.

Game Two
The second game of the day saw a similar path as game one with the Buccaneers jumping out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second, but Ross once again got the rally started with a walk and immediately stole second and advanced to third on the high throw. Ross eventually scored on an infield single from Ashtyn Danley who picked up her first career RBI to tie the game after the second inning.

Danley returned to the circle and began to settle in as she retired seven consecutive batters before Allison Royalty came in on relief duty in the fifth inning.

The offense came through with three runs in both the third and fourth innings. Torres led off the bottom of the third inning with a double, and Ross delivered again with a two-out double to bring Torres home. Just two pitches later, Edenfield hit her third home run in as many games to give the Noles a 4-1 lead after the third inning.

Torres got the Noles going again in the bottom of the fourth inning with a walk, and a Kalei Harding single put runners on the corners for Jaysoni Beachum, and she delivered with a single to score Torres. Ross recorded another hit to load the bases, and Wacaser dropped one in shallow left field to score two more for the Noles. Wacaser picked up another RBI on in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly, and Krystina Hartley put a ball in play to score Ross to end the game early.

Ross once again led the Noles and continues one of her best weeks of her career and is 8-for-9 in the Dugout Club Classic with five RBI, three triples, one home run, four walks and a perfect 3-for-3 on the base paths. In total, Ross has been involved in 15 out of the Seminoles 34 runs (44%) in the Dugout Club Classic.

Danley improved to 2-0 in the circle this season after giving up just two hits and one earned run while recording three strikeouts in four innings.

FSU will play their final two games of the JoAnne Graf Classic tomorrow at 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. when they take on Nicholls in a doubleheader on ACCNX.

Building a top 5 class

Last season FSU started off quickly in the team recruiting rankings but just missed being outside of the top 10. The question is how do the coaches land in the top 5 and have one of the best classes in the country? The Seminoles sit at No. 14 in the Rivals team rankings for the class of 2025. We will go over who FSU has committed, who they stand out for and what big name prospects they would have to land to to get into the top 5.

When researching the Rivals top 5 class since 2020, the lowest amount of prospects signed in a class was 20 by UGA in 2021. The Bulldogs had an average star ranking of 3.85 with two 5-star prospects, 13 4-star prospects and 5 3-star prospects. The top two classes each year had no less than 3 5-star prospects. UGA 2023 and the most was Texas A&M with six 5-star prospects in 2022. They also signed the most players in any single class (30). The key is to land anywhere between two 5-stars and load up on 3-star prospects to land a class in the top five.

FSU is off to a good start in 2025. They are sitting at No. 14 in team rankings but the quality of those prospects committed is very good. OL Solomon Thomas is rated a high four star on Rivals. I expect once he attends a Rivals event later this year, Thomas' ranking will go up. He is listed as a tackle but most project him as a guard and that is where his 5th star will most likely come from.

Javion Hilson is one of the premier pass rushers in Florida. He recently committed to FSU and is a top-100 prospect. The two other players committed to FSU are Ethan Pritchard (three-star) and Tramell Jones (three-Star). Both could potentially pick up fourth stars down the road.

So how can FSU land a top 5 ranked class?

QB Antwann Hill (Houston County) 6-5, 220: Hill is the prototype quarterback. He has size and a very good arm. He can make all the throws. This is the type of prospect that not only can play on Saturdays but also has the potential down the road in the NFL. Hill still needs to put in the work but his talents are not to be denied. We watched him earlier this year and this is a potential five-Star QB. He has all the tools. A class of Hill and Jones is quite impressive. FSU is in contact with Hill.

RB Ousmane Kromah (Lee County) 5-11, 200: We expect FSU to land an elite RB class once again. Kromah is one of the top backs in the 2025 class. He is rated a top five back in the country by Rivals.com. Top 65 player in the nation. We expect FSU to have a legit shot at Kromah.

RB Byron Louis (Plantation American Heritage) 6-1, 200: Mike Norvell likes big backs that can run. Louis fits the bill. He will be a main priority. FSU needs to get him back on campus this spring. With Patrick Surtain ties to Heritage, look for FSU to have a shot.

WR Koby Howard (Hollywood Chaminade) 6-0, 175: I have Howard a lean towards FSU right now. He has been on campus a couple of times and we expect him back at FSU soon. He is a legit receiver and return guy on special teams. He is smooth as a receiver. He has the ability to make something happen after the catch. Tennessee was the team to beat but it looks like FSU has jumped up front.

WR Jaime Ffrench (Jacksonville Mandarin) 6-1, 185: Ffrench is listed as a five-star on some networks and a high four-star on Rivals. He will end up a five-star prospect at the end of the day. He has very good speed and quickness. He also has very good hands and runs solid routes. He is a smooth operator on the football field. FSU is one of the top teams for his services along with Ohio State.

WR Dallas Wilson (Tampa Bay Tech) 6-3, 200: He is the best receiver and prospect at that position in Florida. He has size. He runs with effortlessly. He catches the ball away from his body. He is very difficult to defend. He has all the tools to play at a very high level. FSU is recruiting him, now let’s see them close the deal. He did mention to me that a visit in the near future to FSU would happen.

TE Elyiss Williams (Camden County HS) 6-7, 235: Williams is another prospect that is rated as a five-star on some networks but not all. He is the best tight end in the country. He looks like an NFL prospect. Committed to UGA but he has been on campus at FSU multiple times and is coming back. FSU has a legit shot at pulling the Georgia star.

OT Ziyare Addison (Sumer HS) 6-5, 275: FSU is looking to sign legit tackle prospects. Addison looks the part. He is another player who shined at Rivals' camp last year and another impressive performance could push his stock higher. He is a high four-star prospect. Addison likes coach Alex Atkins and FSU a lot. The Seminoles are one of his leaders. He is one of the prospects I feel they could land by the end of the summer.

OL Max Buchanan (Seminole HS) 6-3, 270: Max is an interior lineman. He is a very good high school prospect. His size will most likely keep him as a three-star. If you are going to pull in three-star prospects they need to be like Max because they won't bring your overall score down that much. He is a very good interior lineman that FSU has been on. Probably ends up a center in college.

DT Myron Charles (Palmetto HS) 6-4, 275: Charles likes FSU. He is one of the premier defensive tackles in the country. He will push high four-star ranking by the end of the upcoming season. He is very good. He has size. Charles moves well for a big man. We would like to see him have a better motor. As a defensive tackle prospect he is priority No. 1 for FSU. He also has FSU at the top of his list.

DT Jarquez Carter (Newberry) 6-2, 280: FSU has pulled a couple of prospects from Newberry a few years back. They are looking to add another defensive tackle in Carter. He is listed at 6-2 but that may be pushing it. Carter is a very good prospect but not an elite tackle. He can stuff the run. You will see him use his hands well on film. He has a decent first step off the ball. He would be a nice third tackle in the class.

DE Zion Grady (Enterprise, Ala.) 6-4, 220: Pulling kids from Alabama is not an easy task. Grady was committed to Alabama but with the new changes at Bama, FSU has snuck in and given themselves a shot to land Grady. He has size and length off the edge. He can get off the ball quickly. You are looking at one of the premier defensive ends in the country. Grady gives you a five-star prospect at a crucial position of need.

LB Riley Pettijohn (McKinley HS) 6-2, 205: FSU coaches are dipping their toes into Texas. Riley is one of the top linebackers in the country. He has all the physical tools you want in a linebacker. He has size. Here is a kid that can drop back into coverage and play the pass. FSU has a shot but they will need some help here.

LB Gavin Nix (IMG Academy) 6-0, 220: Nix is a top 20-30 player in Florida. He has some size. You will see him come up and play the run. He is athletic enough to play in pass coverage. Nix is a prospect that FSU must land. They need linebackers and right now FSU has a shot.

DB Chris McCorkle (Cardinal Mooney) 6-1, 175: One of the main reasons why Mooney won a state title this past season is McCorkle. Landing him will add to an impressive DB room. FSU pulled in a top 2-3 DB class last year and it looks to do the same in 2025. McCorkle just visited FSU and looks to have FSU near the top of his list.

DB Antonio Branch (Booker T Washington) 6-2, 180: Randy Shannon likes big corners. Branch is one of the biggest corners on the board. Ben Hanks will be the guy everyone talks about at Booker T. Washington, but it is Branch who could end up better in college. No way this kid should be ranked as a three-star prospect. He has size and length. He runs very well. Branch is a legit prospect and one FSU will pursue hard.

DB Chris Ewald (Hollywood Chaminade) 6-0, 175: Chris committed early to Michigan. FSU and Miami are both in it for the Lions star. He will be one of the premier corners in Florida this year. He is going to be a battle but one that FSU can win.

DB Gregory Thomas (American Heritage) 6-2, 190: Thomas has blown up this spring. He took a visit to FSU and they are his leader and most likely destination. He plays corner but we project him more as a safety.

DB Jett White (Miami Edison) 6-1, 175: White has size and can run. He has flown under the radar but we see him blowing up this offseason. His speed allows him to match up against most teams' top receivers. He plays with an aggressive style. Maryland landed an early commitment from him but we expect FSU to go hard on White.

Ath. Darrell Johnson (Dodge County) 6-3, 205: FSU did very well in Georgia last cycle and it looks like they will do so again in 2025. Johnson is someone we can put a future forecast in for. He is listed as a safety/athlete. There is a very good chance that Johnson plays linebacker in college. He is another gifted prospect that FSU looks like they are in great shape for. He could commit before the summer camps.

Prospects that could also put FSU over the top

RB Alvin Henderson (Elba, Ala.) 5-10, 190:
His film is filthy. He may be the best back in the country. He has some Jahmyr Gibbs in him. He can flat-out play. FSU is going all in on Henderson and the good thing there are other top backs that Bama and Auburn are after so this is one that could clip through the cracks.

Football New FSU defensive end Sione Lolohea left Tonga at 16, fulfilling his dream on football field

When Siuaki Livai first met Sione Lolohea in 2016, he was a Tongan teenager who had no knowledge of American football and didn't know the English language. Livai's Polynesian-American Sports and Education non-profit laid the groundwork for the new FSU defensive end to become an NFL Draft hopeful almost a decade later.

The final day of ACC action will start with the men’s triple jump at 11 a.m., followed by the women’s mile at 12:10 p.m.

CFP approves 5+7 format for 12-team playoff

From the CFP:

The College Football Playoff (CFP) Board of Managers on Tuesday unanimously revised the qualifying criteria for the 12-team event to now include the five highest-ranked conference champions, plus the next seven highest-ranked teams as determined by the CFP Selection Committee.

“This is a very logical adjustment for the College Football Playoff based on the evolution of our conference structures since the board first adopted this new format in September 2022,” said Dr. Mark Keenum, President of Mississippi State University and Chair of the CFP Board of Managers. “I know this change will also be well received by student-athletes, coaches and fans. We all will be pleased to see this new format come to life on the field this postseason.”

This change modifies the original plan, which called for the bracket each year to include the six highest-ranked conference champions, plus the next six highest-ranked teams.

Under the 12-team playoff format that begins this fall, the four highest-ranked conference champions will be seeded one through four and each will receive a first-round bye, while teams seeded five through 12 will play each other in the first round on the home field of the higher-ranked team. (The team ranked #5 will host #12; team #6 will meet team #11; team #7 will play team #10; and team #8 will meet #9.) The quarterfinals and semifinals will be played in the New Year’s Six bowl games, the national championship game will continue to be at a neutral site. No conference will qualify automatically and there will be no limit on the number of participants from a conference.

FSU track and field wraps up day 1 of ACC indoors

FSU sports information:

The No. 15/NR Florida State indoor track and field teams concluded day one of the 2024 ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships in Boston at the Track at New Balance on Thursday.

The 15th-ranked men’s team started the evening in the 5,000-meter with Kidus Misgina earning seventh place at 13:53.96. Zach Leachman followed Misgina in 14th, earning his season best at 14:06.39.

The Noles added a sixth-place finish in the distance medley relay behind Patrick Donnelly, Alex Collier, Zach Trotter and David Mullarkey at 9:40.16, which ranks fifth in FSU history.

Guinove Joanus won his heat in the 200 preliminaries, advancing to Saturday’s final with a time of 21.26.

Dajaz DeFrand finished first in the preliminary round of the women’s 200, advancing to Saturday’s final with a time of 23.18. Shenese Walker followed DeFrand with a third-place finish, tying her personal best at 23.54.

“I thought we competed really well today in the few events that were entered in,” FSU track and field head coach Bob Braman said. “Kidus did a great job to get seventh in his first ACC Championship, and the men’s distance medley relay fought hard as well. David Mullarkey anchored with a 3:58 mile leg. Friday is always the day in these championships. You’ve got to qualify well to be in position to make some noise on Saturday’s final day.”

The Noles will begin day two of the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championship on Friday with the men’s long jump at 2:15 p.m., followed by the women’s preliminary mile at 3:45 p.m.

All sessions will air on the ACC Network Extra.
