Basketball Three things to watch as FSU plays its final five regular-season games

With five games left to go in the regular season for FSU men’s basketball, let’s take a look at three storylines as the Seminoles (14-12, 8-7 ACC) travel to play at Clemson on Saturday (7:45 p.m. on CW Network).

Thoughts on Hamilton's doghouse, Watkins' consistency and the final five games:

FSU track and field wraps up day 1 of ACC indoors

FSU sports information:

The No. 15/NR Florida State indoor track and field teams concluded day one of the 2024 ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships in Boston at the Track at New Balance on Thursday.

The 15th-ranked men’s team started the evening in the 5,000-meter with Kidus Misgina earning seventh place at 13:53.96. Zach Leachman followed Misgina in 14th, earning his season best at 14:06.39.

The Noles added a sixth-place finish in the distance medley relay behind Patrick Donnelly, Alex Collier, Zach Trotter and David Mullarkey at 9:40.16, which ranks fifth in FSU history.

Guinove Joanus won his heat in the 200 preliminaries, advancing to Saturday’s final with a time of 21.26.

Dajaz DeFrand finished first in the preliminary round of the women’s 200, advancing to Saturday’s final with a time of 23.18. Shenese Walker followed DeFrand with a third-place finish, tying her personal best at 23.54.

“I thought we competed really well today in the few events that were entered in,” FSU track and field head coach Bob Braman said. “Kidus did a great job to get seventh in his first ACC Championship, and the men’s distance medley relay fought hard as well. David Mullarkey anchored with a 3:58 mile leg. Friday is always the day in these championships. You’ve got to qualify well to be in position to make some noise on Saturday’s final day.”

The Noles will begin day two of the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championship on Friday with the men’s long jump at 2:15 p.m., followed by the women’s preliminary mile at 3:45 p.m.

All sessions will air on the ACC Network Extra.

Football Happy return: Specialist, RB Jaylin Lucas rejoins brother at FSU

Most players enter the transfer portal looking for playing time, a chance to win a title and be developed for the NFL. Jaylin Lucas fits all the criteria, although with the added incentive of playing college football with his brother, Florida State receiver Ja’Khi Douglas.

“They had a great season last season,” Lucas said. “I just felt like it was the best fit for me. I also wanted to play here with my brother. Just what coach (Mike) Norvell got going on here, coach YAC (David Johnson), it’s a great, tremendous running back room. Florida State is the place to be. I just love this place."

Lucas has a reason to love FSU, a school he visited for a camp in June 2021 before ultimately choosing Indiana. While listed at 5-foot-9 (and that may be generous) and 175 pounds, he racked up more than 2,000 yards in two years at Indiana — 1,163 kickoff return yards, 546 rushing yards, 329 receiving yards and 14 on punt returns. His three kickoff return touchdowns are tied for an Indiana career record, and Lucas was a first-team All-American returner as a freshman in 2022 as well as a third-team All-Big Ten pick as a sophomore.

Softball FSU sweeps doubleheader vs FIU

Amaya Ross carried the No. 11 Florida State softball team (7-3) to a doubleheader sweep vs FIU (6-7) going 5-for-6 with a combined five hits, including a home run, two triples and three RBI on the opening night of the Dugout Club Classic at JoAnne Graf Field. Makenna Reid got her first start of the season for the Noles in the circle and came out firing allowing just one hit in the first two innings while striking out three.

To lead off the bottom of the second frame Jaysoni Beachum doubled, stealing third on the ensuing pitch. Ross then ripped here second home run of the season over the left field wall to bring in the first two runs of the game.

FIU answered with two runs of their own in the top of the third, but Florida State regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth as Ross slashed a triple and scored off a throwing error to give the Noles a one-run advantage. Game Two

Ashtyn Danley got the nod in game two and shut down FIU right off the bat allowing just two hits in five innings, the longest outing of her career.

Ross got things started once again for the Noles in the bottom of the second inning with a single, reaching second on an error. Michaela Edenfield was in a battle in her first at-bat of the game and sent a moonshot over the left field wall and over Spirit Way for her third home run of the season to give the Noles a 2-0 lead.

Ross got things started again in the bottom of the fourth with a single then immediately stole second. Devyn Flaherty moved her over to third on a single to put runners on the corners. Flaherty stole second, but the throw sailed into the outfield allowing both Ross and Flaherty to score. Hallie Wacaser then joined the party with a solo shot for her second home run in the past four games to give the Noles a commanding 5-0 lead.

FIU scored an unearned run in the top of the fifth, but the Seminole bats stayed hot in the bottom half of the inning as they added three more runs on the board. Jaysoni Beachum led off with a single, and Ross picked up her second triple of the night to bring a run across. Flaherty laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Ross from third to make it 7-1. Edenfield then hit her second home run of the game over the center field wall. It was Edenfield's fourth home run of the season and her third multi-home run game of her career.

Updates: FSU women seek 20th win, host BC on Thursday (6 p.m. on ACCN Extra)

The Florida State women’s basketball team faces Boston College (11-16, 3-11) on Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Donald L. Tucker Center (ACC Network Extra).

FSU (19-8, 10-5) looks to clinch its 10th 20-win season in their last 11 seasons, which excludes the 2020-21 COVID year when they played just 19 games.

Junior forward Makayla Timpson has six straight double-doubles. She is on pace to break the single-season record for double-doubles, blocked shots and rebounds. A seventh double-double in a row would tie the school record (Cherry Rivers in 1978-79). Natasha Howard has the school record for a single season with 15 double-doubles.

Timpson and Sara Bejedi hit the 1,000-point mark in their FSU careers in the win at Wake Forest last Thursday and will be honored before the game.

FSU has won five of its last six games, with the only defeat to then-No. 12 Notre Dame. The Seminoles have a week off before finishing out the regular season at Louisville on Feb. 29 and against Clemson on March 3.

Baseball FSU looking to continue early-season success vs. Western Carolina

One week into the season, the FSU baseball team leads the country in both strikeouts per nine and stolen bases per game. There will be a temporary change in the weekend rotation this week but the Seminoles will look to keep rolling vs. Western Carolina.

College Football 25 will have the look and feel of a game inside Doak, featuring players on the 2024 roster, a variety of uniform and helmet combinations, music from the Marching Chiefs as well as Osceola riding Renegade.

Gray Albright wins Watersound Invitational

FSU sports information:

Senior Gray Albright recorded his second career tournament win with a victory at the Watersound Invitational on Wednesday afternoon at Shark’s Tooth Golf Club in Watersound, Fla. The lefty from Ocala shot a 10-under (68-70-68) to earn the win by one stroke against a strong field.

The Seminoles had a good final round, shooting 11-under for the day and tying for second in the tournament with Georgia Tech at 20-under. Vanderbilt took home the Watersound Invitational team title at 29-under.

For Albright, it was another crowning achievement after holding off two of collegiate golf’s best in Gordon Sargent (-9) of Vanderbilt and Christo Lamprecht (-9) of Georgia Tech. It marks his first victory since winning the 2023 Seminole Intercollegiate at the Seminole Legacy Golf Club.

It came down to Albright’s steady play on the back nine, where he recorded a birdie on the par-5 13th hole while adding eight pars. He only made one mistake in his final round with a bogey on the par-3 fifth hole. After he recorded a par on the 18th hole, he was the clubhouse leader at 10-under and had to wait out a late surge from Sargent before earning the win.

Albright took advantage of the par 3 and par 4 holes all week, tying for third among the field with a 1-under score on par 3s and finishing second in par 4 scoring at 6-under. Only three of his 54 holes played at Shark’s Tooth Golf Club were over par.

Redshirt senior Cole Anderson had another good day, shoot 69 and tying for fifth overall at 7-under (71-69-69). Sophomore Luke Clanton came on late as well and earned another Top 10 finish, tying for seventh at 6-under (74-68-68).

Michael Mays and Jack Bigham each finished at 3-under and tied for 18th overall. Tyler Weaver tied for 22nd at 1-under (72-72-71).

The Seminoles prepare for the Cabo Collegiate held on March 3-5 at Twin Dolphin Golf Club in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

Football FSU QB Trever Jackson ready to work after walking on with Seminoles over scholarship offers elsewhere

Last month, three-star quarterback Trevor Jackson elected to walk on at FSU over a few scholarship offers elsewhere. He sees the opportunity to learn from Mike Norvell and honor his late grandmother's desire to see him play at FSU as a blessing.

Softball Alameda feels FSU's pitchers will learn from pressure of top-25 matchups

Florida State’s ERAs look more like interest rates. This is also the cost of business when inexperienced pitchers face top-25 teams.

While Allison Royalty (0.54) and Mimi Gooden (1.56) have relatively lower ERAs in their first few weekends of the 2024 season, Emma Wilson’s ballooned to 5.09, Makenna Reid's to 7.88, Ashtyn Danley's to 10.14 and Madi Balk's to 21.00. A pitching staff that’s light on experience learned some difficult but not unexpected lessons after going 1-2 in the Clearwater Invitational with a win over No. 9 Stanford and losses to No. 20 UCLA and No. 4 Georgia.

“I expected us to get exposed a little bit,” FSU coach Lonni Alameda said. “And I also wanted to put ourselves in a lot of different positions. There’s times I could have gone to Allison or an experienced pitcher, but I decided to get Mimi in there, I decided to get other people in there, to try and extend Makenna, try to do some things that I need to see what we’re capable of against really good hitting teams so that I know what we need to work on.

“I kept saying, ‘Stay with me and let’s work through this so that I can learn and we can learn so we could be better.' ”

FSU jumped out to a hot start but then BC rallied and made the Seminoles fight for a 63-62 win on Feb. 6. That was the Seminoles last win, with Virginia, Virginia Tech and Duke claiming wins over the last two weeks. Of note, FSU has allowed 10 or more 3s in each of those losses.

As always, watch out for BC’s Quinten Post. He averages 16.4 points and 7.7 rebounds, but he had 21 points and 12 rebounds in the loss to FSU a few weeks ago.

Chandler Jackson has scored 9.3 points in his last three games, which includes 17 vs. Virginia.

FSU is 84th in KenPom's metrics, while BC is 88th. The Seminoles are projected to go 4-2 in their final six regular-season games.
