Tennis: Four Seminoles travel to North Carolina for ITA All-American Championships

FSU sports information:

The Florida State women’s tennis team has four student-athletes traveling to Cary, N.C., for the ITA All-American Championships beginning this Saturday.
Juniors Millie Bissett, Kristyna Lavickova, Tina Li, and senior Maria Juliana Parra Romero have been selected to compete this weekend. All four will compete in singles, while the 34th-ranked duo of Bissett and Parra Romero will also be competing in doubles.
Lavickova enters this weekend as the 98th-ranked singles player in the nation. Parra Romero and Bissett are also ranked in singles with Parra Romero ranked No. 113 and Bissett No. 120 in the ITA rankings.
Bissett accumulated 30 wins last spring and was named All-ACC in doubles with Vic Allen. Lavickova secured 14 wins in the spring of 2024, which included a nine-match win streak.
Parra Romero and Li are in their first season with the Seminoles. Parra Romero spent her first three years at Liberty where she collected 73 wins and earned first-team All-Conference USA recognition in 2024. Li totaled 33 wins in her two seasons with BYU and earned All-WCC Honors in doubles in 2023.
The ITA All-American Championships begin Sept. 21 and run through Sept. 29.

Baseball FSU's Parker Messick enjoying impressive season in Double-A

Osceola intern Justin Hood catches up with FSU left-hander Parker Messick, who has delivered an impressive few months at Double-A Akron in Cleveland's minor league system:

Football Observations from FSU's first practice availability of Cal week

Florida State returned to the practice field Tuesday morning for its first open practice of the week, four days out from Saturday night's home game against Cal (3-0).

Head coach Mike Norvell said after the practice that it was a "high-emotion" day of work, adding that was what he wanted to see. "I saw some guys that in the earlier part of practice that maybe lost control of a reaction or a response. To see them finish the way they did, it was definitely a positive step."

Here are our observations from Tuesday's practice:

FSU's first team period Tuesday morning was a pair of red-zone series, an area where the offense has struggled this season. The first series ended on third down with DJ Uiagalelei throwing an endzone interception to Fentrell Cypress. The second series, helmed by Brock Glenn, ended with a touchdown run by Samuel Singleton after a few runs gave the offense first and goal inside the five.

I know you all are probably tired of hearing this by now given the fact that it hasn't yet translated into games, but I thought it was a good day for Uiagalelei after his interception to start things. He connected with Hykeem Williams and Malik Benson a few times each during team periods, using the middle of the field well to find open targets. He also had a goal-line touchdown pass later in the day to Ja'Khi Douglas under some pressure from the defensive line. Glenn had a few nice throws as well and also used his legs effectively on a few occasions to pick up yards when he couldn't find an open receiver or found himself under pressure. Luke Kromenhoek threw an interception to Conrad Hussey during 7-on-7 pass skelly work, but he also had probably the single-best throw of the day in 11-on-11 when he connected with Micahi Danzy deep down the sideline on a play-action pass. It was a perfect throw and a nice catch by the running back through pretty good coverage.

It's something that FSU's wide receivers work on from time to time, but that they spent a few early periods of Tuesday's practice working on perimeter blocking felt intentional after Norvell called FSU's perimeter blocking against Memphis "bad" and "awful" during his press conference Monday. We saw much better perimeter blocking on a screen to Benson late in Tuesday's practice that allowed him to pick up about 10 yards thanks to an improved execution from his fellow wideouts.

Blake Nichelson also had an interception in 1-on-1s to round out the Mission Takeaway counter at three during Tuesday's practice. DJ Lundy and KJ Sampson had a few nice plays against the run where they moved laterally well to stop a run for a short gain. Marvin Jones Jr. also had a pair of "tackles for loss" on consecutive plays during the final 11-on-11 period.

Kyle Morlock had probably the best catch of the day, getting separation in a hole in the defense and going well above his head for an impressive full-extension catch down the sideline on a slightly high pass. Fellow tight end Brian Courtney also had a nice catch on a really nice throw from Glenn during the same 11-on-11 period.

We'll be back out there Wednesday morning for the final practice availability before Saturday's game.

Sports Business Everything about the FSU v ACC lawsuit is complicated, including the timeline

The Osceola spent an hour with FSU AD Michael Alford discussing the changing landscape of collegiate athletics, much of which is being dictated by recent Supreme Court anti-trust rulings that have mandated NIL, and now revenue sharing with the players. This is the second story in a multi-part series discussing a myriad of issues impacting the athletics budget.

As an FSU Vice President, Alford is responsible not only to balancing the athletics budget but also to alerting and advisint the FSU Board of Trustees on matters affecting athletics. The impact these court rulings will have on athletics -- tens of millions per year -- played a large role in the Florida State Univesity's decision to challenge the ACC's Grant of Rights which allegedly binds FSU to a conference media rights package that will pay FSU $40 million less than the media rights agreements of the Southeastern and Big 10 conferences.

While limited in the scope of what he can say about the lawsuit, Alford was candid about the complexity of the lawsuit and of the mediation process either of which could take years, not months.

FSU v ACC Lawsuit will take more time than public thinks

Football No changes to FSU's Cal week depth chart

Florida State has released its depth chart for this Saturday's Week 4 matchup vs. Cal at Doak Campbell Stadium.

Sweeping changes may be coming to FSU's actual depth chart this week, but they were not reflected on the depth chart shared publicly on Monday. There were no changes whatsoever to this week's depth chart in the FSU game notes.

Linebacker Cam Riley, who left the Memphis game with an injury, is still listed as a co-starter alongside Blake Nichelson. Shyheim Brown is still listed as the starting buck safety after missing the Memphis game. Jeremiah Byers, who has missed the last two games, is still listed as the starting right tackle and Darius Washington, who suffered an injury pregame on Saturday and didn't play, is still listed as the starting left tackle.

Additionally, DJ Uiagalelei is still listed as the starting quarterback with Brock Glenn as his backup and Luke Kromenhoek as the third strong.

Again, it's possible that this is all a smokescreen and we could see sweeping changes on Saturday night against Cal. If that's the case, though, we'll likely have to wait until Saturday to know for sure as FSU isn't confirming that the youth movement many have called for is coming this week.

Soccer FSU opens ACC play vs. Syracuse on Thursday

FSU sports information:

The No. 2 Florida State soccer team (5-0-1) begins conference play at home against Syracuse (6-3-1) on Thursday night. The Seminoles currently hold a 12 game unbeaten streak in conference play dating back to 2022.

Florida State faces Syracuse in back-to-back seasons for the first time in ten years and will host the Orange for only the second time since 2014. FSU leads the series 6-0-1 with three consecutive victories dating back to 2016. Last year’s matchup at Syracuse required two second half goals to put the Seminoles over the Orange including a 84th minute game-winning goal by Onyi Echegini.

The Seminoles continue to extend and break program records on their impressive run dating back to last season. Florida State has scored in 40 straight games and holds a 29-game unbeaten streak, both of which are program records. FSU has recorded five shutouts in the opening six games and have conceded just two goals in the past 10 games.

The reigning national champions concluded non-conference play unbeaten for a fifth consecutive season. Last time out, FSU claimed a 3-0 victory at Florida to mark a seventh consecutive victory over its in-state rival. Taylor Huff opened the scoring with her sixth goal in six games before Wrianna Hudson and Kameron Simmonds scored in the second half to put the game to rest.

FSU has scored 24 goals in non-conference play, the most goals scored in that stretch since 2015 while conceding just one goal in non-conference play for the first time since 2018.

The Seminoles sent six players representing three nations to the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia. Marianyela Jiménez and Venezuela picked up its first-ever point in the competition with a 0-0 draw against South Korea while Brazil and the United States qualified into the knockout round. Both nations needed extra time in their Round of 16 matches as Lara Dantas and Brazil defeated Cameroon in extra time while Jordynn Dudley scored the game-winning goal for the U.S. to defeat Mexico 3-2.

Dudley began the incredible comeback victory for the United States in the quarterfinal match against Germany with a 90+8 minute goal to put the Americans within one before equalizing the next minute later at 2-2. The U.S. won 3-1 on penalties as Brazil fell to North Korea by one goal. The United States will face North Korea on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. to clinch a spot in the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Final.

Gates will open at 6 p.m. and general admission is free. The first 200 fans will receive a free green koozie upon entry to celebrate our mental health awareness match. The 7 p.m. game will be available to stream on ACC Network Extra.

Sports Business Yahoo report: ACC exploring new revenue structure to resolve FSU, Clemson lawsuits

This feels like a significant olive branch. But is it a significant financial bridge, and one that you can get enough presidents/chancellors to agree to?

Reporting from Ross Dellenger of Yahoo:

Sports Business Seminole Sidelines: ACC's attempt to restructure revenue, FSU BOT notes

On Wednesday's edition of the Osceola's Seminole Sidelines, Jerry Kutz and Bob Ferrante unpack what the ACC could be doing by extending an olive branch to resolve the FSU, Clemson lawsuits with an attempt to restructure revenue. We also offer thoughts on Tennessee's "talent tax" and notes from FSU's Board of Trustees meeting.

DJ Interception in Memphis Game

Listen, I hate making excuses but honestly what were the refs doing on this play. I guess that DJ has been so bad at FSU they just assumed to not look at the actual play but the receiver (Morlock) his defender basically grabbed him while the ball was in the air. No matter how bad the throw is, that is the definition of a PI. It was plain as day and the interception should be overturned and FSU should have had an automatic first down. Also DJ on that play had decent blocking. Early did lose leverage and let his defender through. If DJ moves to his left and not to his right that pass actually gets off and may have been completed.

UF hangs on to defeat FSU volleyball in five sets

FSU sports information:

The No. 18 Florida State volleyball team (7-2) fell to the No. 16 Florida Gators (7-2) in five sets (23-25, 25-22, 25-21, 16-25, 6-15) on Tuesday night in Gainesville.

The level of volleyball was high early on in set one as the two teams traded points, but FSU was able to build a slight lead and took a 15-11 lead at the media timeout. The Gators closed the gap to tie the set at 18. The teams then traded the next 10 points consecutively, but with the set tied at 23, Florida scored the final two points to take the set.

The Seminoles overcame a plethora of service errors in the second set to tie up the match. The two teams traded points once again for a large part of the set, but this time it was FSU who rallied late. With the set tied at 20, a kill from Taylor Head and an attack error by the Gators gave the Noles some separation at 22-20. The Gators cut the lead to one, but FSU scored the final three points to take the set.

It was a set of runs in set three as the Noles used a 6-2 run to jump out to a 15-11 lead at the media timeout. The Gators stormed back on a 10-3 run to take a 20-18 lead, but the Seminoles used a strong block to use a huge 7-1 rally to take the set 25-21.

The Gators rallied back and dominated set four from start to finish to send the match into a fifth set and carried that momentum into the fifth set and ran away with the set 15-6.

Khori Louis continued her terrific play with a career-high 18 kills while hitting .630. Koenig added 13 kills while Head had 10 kills.

FSU will be back in action on Saturday as they head to Tuscaloosa to take on Alabama. First serve is set for 3 p.m. and can be seen live on SECN+.

Football Second Look Sunday: FSU vs. Memphis

The Osceola staff takes a second look at FSU's performance vs. Memphis as the Noles drop to 0-3 after losing to 20-12 to the Tigers on Saturday afternoon.

FSU's first drive of the game

1-10 FSU25-Nice start to the game, inside zone to Williams and nice blocks by 53 and 67 to have a positive start to game

2-2 FSU33-Sometimes the other team just makes a great play, LB spills the run to the gap outside of him and the safety fits the next gap and puts his helmet and the ball and forces a fumble. Williams might could have done a better job of ball security, but it was a hell of a hit. The worst possible start for FSU, the best possible start for Memphis.

Memphis 1st drive of game

1-10 FSU25-Nice start for the defense holds Memphis to short gain, might have gone for no gain if D Jackson had stayed in his gap a little longer but he was trying to make a play.

2-8 FSU23-Payton does a great job of getting up field and forcing the QB deeper than he wanted to be, throws off platform, causes INC.

3-8 FSU23-MLB comes on blitz, WDE is a dropper, but he doesn't get any depth, never leaves LOS, he was not spying, looked like AZ thought the DE was suppose to run with crosser.

P1-7 FSU7- Knowles come off edge unblocked. Forces errant throw.
Nice play by Farmer, gets off double team on QB draw, nice gap discipline.

2-7 FSU7- Nice play by Farmer to get off double team and make play on QB draw, nice gap discipline.

3-9 FSU9-Jackson and Farmer run a TON stunt and Farmer comes free for sack.

4-17 FSU17-FG for Memphis.

This was a win for FSU as whole not to give up a TD but the entire sequence had to give Memphis some confidence.

Sunday Morning QB -FSU vs. Georgia Tech

I am not going to lie, I thought FSU had a legit shot at losing this game. If you watch the NFL and see the teams go over to Europe to play the favorite does not always play well. FSU just came of a 13-0 season in 2023. They lost multiple starters. When I did a podcast with Jason Staples last week one of my first questions to him is where was FSU better on offense than a year ago. QB - No, RB-No, WR-No, TE-No....This is not a knock on the 2024 team. I did not get to watch the first half yesterday. I did get to watch it last night after coming home from a HS football game. I expected a turnover, bad execution football game where FSU made a ton of mistakes. ZERO TURNOVERS and they lost a game as a 10.5 favorite. The reality is this is a flawed team. Do I think FSU is going to lose every game or most of them the rest of the way, NO....MN is a very good coach and he is not going to allow this team to fall apart. That being said my biggest concern going forward is how will this team respond. I remember back in the days with Bobby...everytime FSU lost a tough game, his teams always seemed to respond well.

THE PORTAL - I am going to bring this up because it is the ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM. It has been the single most important part of FSU rebuild. I will not question MN use of the portal because he has been like so damn good at using it. His ability to find guys and have them play at an ELITE level is like no other program. FSU has worked the portal like MAGIC. That being said I don't believe it is sustainable. You look at FSU wide receiver room....FSU missed on some guys early on like Malik McClain and Joshua Burrell. Guys like Poitier should be #3 guys on the team. He is a good take. He just should not be your number one guy. Destyn Hill - Here is a kid FSU waited for what seemed like a lifetime. He comes in and the reality is Hill was not in football shape. How could he be. He did not play football for a long time. FSU missed on guys and you take Keon Coleman and Johnny Wilson, they leave and the position takes a major downgrade. They did recruit the position well last season but you need a balanced roster of good Srs, Jrs....and so on. I will say this if FSU wants to win and play for National Titles....They are going to have to recruit HS football more. It is just my opinion but I feel it is the right one. The Portal is to supliment your HS recruiting. It is not to overtake it. Now to the game...

QB
DJ Uiagalelei - 19 of 27 - 70.37 percent. If I told anyone before yesterdays game DJ would have a 70 plus percent throwing day there is no way FSU did not blow GT out. He did not play poorly. You can question his ability to not having more big plays in the run game with him or down the field. That being said he was very good on the first drive and was very good on the final drive to tie the game. In between he was the frusturating player he has been his whole career. I said on podcast both with Pat and Jason Staples that the fans are going to go through some ups and downs with him. The fact that MN only has one season with him also makes it tough because the improvement may not happen till the end of the season and by then it may be to late. He was not the main reason FSU lost yesterday. I do think DJ will get better. That being said, I watched Cam Ward this spring four times and I could see why MN went after him and did not take DJ commitment right away. If Ward is at FSU yesterday, the Seminoles win that game. He is VERY GOOD. Back to the portal...I think FOR FSU to make the playoffs over the next two years Luke K or Glenn need to be the GUY. I am telling you DJ Lagway is the GUY and UF is going to pass FSU if they don't have the GUY with one of those two as DJ will turn UF around. Like to see DJ more envolved or have more designed run plays for him.

RB
I have said a million times that as long as MN is at FSU, I have no problems with his run game. They did not have a great game yesterday but that won't be the case the rest of the way. I would like to see more of Kam Davis and Lucas and less of Roydell Williams. Since FSU does not have great speed at receivers I believe those two give you more big plays threats. Holmes and Williams are both solid but FSU can do better.

WR
I am a big fan of FSU receiver class in 2024. If FSU can hold onto CJ Wiley the future looks bright. FSU really needs Hykeem Williams to get healthy and get on the field. He is FSU only hope in 2024 for a deep passing game. The loss of Hill to injury and All Day Dre taking his game to South Carolina really hurt FSU receiver room. I do think this group will show more as a the season goes along but Williams needs to play. FSU blocking from this group was not good. You watch Keon Coleman and Johnny Wilson they were huge on a ton of FSU success in the run game. Benson is a very good #2 but he is not Coleman or Wilson.

TE
When FSU signed Kyle Morlock I said that if he could be Caz Pirouski that would be his celing. I got hammered. I did not see a player with speed. I did not see some great option at TE. The reality is Kyle is a solid player but not elite. MN likes to use 2-3 tight ends. Not sure they have one right now.

OL
The offensive line did not play well. Richie Leonard should not be playing at FSU. I am sorry but not sold that Julian Armella can be better than Leonard. Armella is bigger, longer, more athletic. I am going to say it now, Armella transfers and starts at another program and ends up an All Conference player. I have seem him play in games and while Armella makes mistakes, he is only going to get better playing. Remember Andrew Datko played as freshman. Bobby Hart played as a freshman. FSU entire OL against ND in the Bowl game the line was freshman. Young players are going to make mistakes but the upside of Aremlla and Early is much higher. Leonard is small and has zero length. He had guys cross his face multiples times. Robert Scott did not have a good game. I don't know how much of an impact Atkins not being there had but it sure as heck does not seem like it helped.

DL
Pat Payton and Marvin Jones....They are going to be good this year but the reality is neither of them is Jared Verse or Jermaine Johnson. You probably should have one starting and the other back him up. FSU needs an elite guy (Javion Hilson). The DL not reset the line of scrimmage yesterday. The loss of Verse and Braden Friske were huge. If you are going to win games - you must win up front. The DL was constantly pushed around.
I think we were sold a farm on Farmer. That performance yesterday was not what you need from a guy who has been compensated fairly.

LB
First Quarter, 1st and ten on their own 31 who shoots through and makes a tackle for loss Blake Nichelson. This kid needs to be on the field. He is new to the game but let him get his licks in now. I am willing to put up with the mental mistakes now so he can be good later on. I remember watching Dan Morgan at Miami. He came in as a former RB like Nichelson and really struggled. I personally though the sucked. By the time he left Miami he was one of the best to ever play there. This kid will be one of FSU best LB in a couple of seasons.

#9 - I don't want to hammer a kid but that being said he did not play well yesterday. That was a rough performance. Omar Graham was not recruited because of his size. He was not recruited for his speed and athletic ability. He was recruited by his high footbal IQ. He is a smart kid with good instincts. He did not play like a smart player yesterday. He was out of position the entire game. #9 took himself out of many plays. He needs to get better. APB - Kam Riley....Where was he yesterday? He was a non factor. Lundy made a few plays. This group had a rough day. Only the OL played worse.

S
Conrad Hussey - He needs to start at safety. KID HAS DAWG IN HIM. He just plays with a ton of emotion and always seems to make the big play. This is another reason why I am against the portal. Hussey is on your team. He is one of the best young safeties on the team. You keep taking older guys this kid will only get one great year. You need 2-3 great years of him. Hussey is the real deal.

#22 when Korey Mangum played at FSU, I felt the jersey #22 should have been retired. While players have it retired for being great. Korey should have had his retired for being so bad that I did not want that mojo to hurt any other player to put it on. WOW....#22 yesterday was Korey Mangum bad. Miami has his brother on the roster and still cut him. You could see why yesterday. FSU has better options or if they don't safety is a position they better go and recruit better. Shyheim along with Hussey should be a good pair.

CB
AZ Thomas, Edwin Joseph...These guys are good.

Final Thoughts - IT IS ONE GAME. This team RIGHT NOW is not a PLAYOFF Team. You have a lot of football to play. This game and result really is not surprising. Georgia Tech played well last year and brought in a ton of experience into this game. FSU was breaking in a new QB and a lot of new parts on offense. I still have faith this season can be very good. Don't look at the entire season and try and predict which games FSU can win or lose. You have to take one game at a time. FSU can still be very good. By seasons end they could have 2-3 loses but go on a run late, win the ACC title game and make the playoffs as a conference champ. This team will get better but it is not the 2023 version. This team right now is not very good but there is potential to get better. Be patient and lets see what happens. FSU fans have a tendency to lose their s**t and think they will lose every game after a loss. If you were ojective this was not that surprising.

The strength of this team was supposed to be the OL and DL. These two units need to play better then this for FSU to win ball games.
