FSU HC Mike Norvell is live with host Gene Deckerhoff. Live quotes coming.
On the Syracuse win: “For our team to have another game come down to the last play. Have all three phases execute and be able to win the game. It was wonderful to see the smiles in the locker room from our players.”
On the tight battle with Cuse: There were a lot of moments where I thought we were close to breaking it open…but liked the response from players in the one-score games. Be able to finish the game the way it happened will build on confidence.
On QB Jordan Travis: Played really well in all phases. Was smart with the football and efficient in the passing game. Wanted to take what the defense gave them, Jordan did a good job of managing that. Rushed over 100 yards. Really moved around well on Wednesday in practice.
On Travis as a runner: Extremely elusive in what he does. Some are designed but a lot are created by him. His feet can make him right, did a lot on Saturday night.
On blocking downfield: Really pleased to see. Receivers downfield never stopped on the play. Created the extra yardage that was necessary to win the game.
7:20 p.m.
Defensively, just need to continue to work on the details, open-field tackling.
Out of commercial break: “Once again I wanted to say thank you to all the fans who came out on Saturday. Truly a special moment. Excited to get the win and really looking forward to the future.”
On Camm McDonald: Battled through this last week as well. Was very productive as a pass receiver. Had some plays he’d like back. Continuing to improve. They ask a lot of the tight ends. Great to see him have that type of production on Saturday.
On Treshaun Ward: Dynamic playmaker running the ball and catching. Very elusive and tough to tackle. Is a self-made man. Excited for what the future holds
More on RBs: Takes a committee for the running backs. Investment of what they do without the ball in his hands, Treshaun had a couple great blitz pickups. Those guys are truly willing to do the dirty work.
Offensively, still trying to establish an identity. Happy to run the football. Offense is a work in progress. Happy to get Maurice Smith back. Excited for what the rest of the season is going to look like for the offense.
Played a lot of combos on offensive line already, which is part of the game. Guys are playing at less than 100 percent, but they care so much. They are getting better.
UNC plays really well at home, explosive football team, really well coached, explosive players at all positions. Guys are excited about the opportunity.
7:35 p.m.
Things that equate to winning football: Third and fourth down situations, converted 8 of 17. 6 of 6 in the red zone with 4 TD drives. Played more disciplined, less penalties That needs to continue.
Key to goal line stand was good pad level. DeLoach had low pads, and “stoned him.” Big play in the game. Loved seeing the emotional reaction and guys gave everything they had. Those are moments to build upon.
Need to continue to improve on turnover margin. Need to create more takeaways and own the ball on offense and special teams. Will be big part of game Saturday versus UNC.
UNC on film, an extremely explosive offense. Very experienced offensive line. Defensively, multiple fronts. Well-coached and talented athletes. Will take a great effort. Going on the road, control things you can control.
UNC defense is coming off of their best games, really shut down Duke. Guys that can really run at corner with great length. Linebackers can go sideline to sideline.
K Ryan Fitzgerald is the player guest tonight and special teams coord. and DEs coach John Papuchis is the coach guest tonight. Quotes coming up.
On K Fitzgerald: “So proud of him in that game and the entire season. He comes every day with the right approach."
That is all from Norvell.
---------------------------------------
Next up is K Ryan Fitzgerald.
On game-winning attempts: Just try to treat it like any other kick, mentally and physically. We preach consistency in the life of a kicker, just try to keep it the same.
After the game, Graham Gano texted him and he’s spoken with him a few times. He also trained with Roberto and Ricky Aguayo in Alabama.
On his Georgia high school records: said he had a great coach and played on a great team that scored a lot of points that put him in position to kick a lot of field goals.
Friday night Georgia high school football environment, said there’s nothing like it.
On Syracuse Win: “We’ve been busting our butts since January since Tour of duty, finally getting that first win is awesome and something we can keep building on.”
Asked if he has some more game-winners in him, he said "yes sir, absolutely."
---------------------------------------
Next up special teams coordinator and DEs coach John Papuchis.
On Cuse: "That was a fitting way for our first win to finish. There was a never a question in my mind whether he was going to make that kick or not. His composure on the sideline, he did a great job."
In return game, a huge amount of practice time is spent on coaching blocking in return game.
Said it’s been a revolving door at the two returner spots so far this year but: “I feel good about us being able to hone in on one returner the rest of this year.”
On Jermaine Johnson, Keir Thomas: “Been super blessed and fortunate to have both of these guys this year. Both coming in as seniors, leadership and approach to every day work.”
On Jermaine Johnson: “Jermaine has a great, instinctive approach. He’s able to set up a lineman and execute his plan and if his plan isn’t going the way he intended it, that’s when his instincts kick in.”
That's all from tonight, thanks for reading everyone, check back in the morning for Tuesday practice updates!
