BRAVES 2017

And....toast. As for the trade, all the Braves beat writers are harping on the money saved, hoping that the Braves make a move for a more frontline starter with controllable years left on his contract and the money saved will be used for him.
The money saved isn't this year because they're paying the remainder of the 2017 contracts for both Garcia and Recker.

No, they are not. Twins picked up the balance of his deal. Braves sent $100,000 to help with Recker's deal. The only article saying the Braves are paying, is ESPN, and it is wrong. AJC and the local Minnesota paper, the StarTribune, reported that Minnesota will pay Garcia.

The deal would make absolutely no sense if the Braves paid. I'm not a huge fan of the deal unless they use the money saved. If they are just going to sit on it for the year, it's a waste.

He was out of contract at the end of the year; he could have walked and the Braves would have gotten nothing. So, instead, the Braves traded him for nothing.

I'm still hoping they can pull a trade off for Sonny Gray without giving up a kings ransom, Yankees may spoil that.

Average bullpen and this team is right in the wild card hunt and on the Nationals tail.

The Braves just finished a brutal run of 19 straight games (8 home/11 road) against teams that are in either 1st or 2nd place in their division at 8-11. Start a four game series at Philly tomorrow which should be a breather but they have had the Braves number for some reason so far this year.

Braves to demote struggling shortstop Dansby Swanson to minors
favorite to win the National League Rookie of the Year Award. Formerly the No. 1 overall pick, Swanson had earned additional support by hitting .302/.361/.442 during his 38-game introduction to the majors in 2016.

Unfortunately, Swanson's first full season in the majors hasn't gone as swimmingly. He entered Wednesday batting .209/.285/.306, good for a 55 OPS+ that tied for the third-worst in baseball among players with more than 300 plate appearances. The good news: Swanson won't move down that list. The bad news: That's because he's headed to Triple-A:

Dansby Swanson has been informed he'll be sent to Triple-A Gwinnett. The Braves aren't expected to announce the move until Thursday.

Swanson's demotion is presumably so he can play in some low-pressure games and get his confidence back. At that point, he's likely to return to the Braves lineup.

AD BY SHOWTIMEAdrien Broner vs. Mikey GarciaBrash and flashy four-division champ Adrien Broner faces undefeated three-division champion Mikey Garcia.
In the interim, expect the Braves to continue giving burn to rookie Johan Camargo, who is hitting .313/.333/.490 on the season. He's not going to continue to play that well -- but then, it seemed like Swanson wasn't going to continue playing as poorly as he has. Baseball is weird.

I don't think this comes as a surprise to anyone that follows the team.

The surprise is it took this long.

When I drove through Atlanta about 3 weeks ago his picture was on a billboard and then you combine it with his bobble-head night and several commercials featuring him, it appears they were trying to market the "local kid" as a ticket draw. This probably put a bit too much pressure on him too soon or it could be he just a very good player at the college level. It is still too early to determine and time will tell. I doubt he would have been this long if not for all the marketing though.

ESPN is reporting that the Braves are listening to offers for closer Jim Johnson.
1. Who the hell would want him?
2. Why would Atlanta hesitate even a second if they have the opportunity to get rid of him even if it's for a bag of practice balls?

Hell, I'd throw IN a bag of practice balls if someone would take him.
Can we throw in an added bonus withTeheran? I lost track how many home runs he gave up tonight... what is puzzling is that Teheran was struggling down 5-0 in the fifth and Snitker left him in .... gave up a three run shot.

I guess the Braves really wish they traded Julio 2 years ago now when he was at the top of his game. Seems like it's been a quick downturn for him. Hope he can find it again or he's going to be leading the league in homers served up for a while. He's throwing meat.

Isn't he making about $5 million a year?

Good gosh! Johnson blows yet another save. At what point is snitker at fault for continuing to pitch Johnson?

League leading eighth blown save
According to this article, it's the lack of a replacement already on staff that's preventing the move.

Braves’ Snitker on changing closer: ‘Don’t think we’re there yet’

  • Michael Cunningham

PHILADELPHIA

Braves reliever Jim Johnson’s struggles continued on Saturday with a blown save against the Phillies, his third in his past seven chances.

But manager Brian Snitker said he’s not ready to try someone else in the closer’s role.

“It’s something you would think about but I don’t think we are there yet,” Snitker said.

Snitker noted that the other top two candidates to close games, Arodys Vizcaino and Rex Brothers, also gave up runs in the 4-3 extra-innings lost to the Phillies. The Phillies pulled within 3-2 with a run against Vizcaino in the eighth and won the game on Ty Kelly’s walk-off single against Brothers in the 11th.

Another closer candidate, Jose Ramirez, pitched two perfect innings against the Phillies and has a 2.53 ERA in 46 appearances (42 2/3 innings) with 39 strikeouts and 19 walks. But he’s struggled in late-inning situations this season and has a 4.91 ERA in four ninth-inning appearances.

Johnson has a majors-leading eight blown saves this season. In his past 24 appearances he’s complied a 5.32 ERA with six blown saves in 19 chances and a .345 opponents’ batting average.

Sometimes statistics don’t reflect performance because of luck or other circumstances. But Johnson said that’s not the case with him.

“I think they pretty much sum it up,” Johnson said. “I haven’t been throwing as many quality pitches as I should be and I’m paying the price for it.”

Looks like our entire bullpen stinks. Close to 10 out in wild card now. Think we ought to sell off anyone who's contract is up in the next two years?

What I'm saying is there isn't much on the MLB team that those in contention would want that the Braves would be willing to give up.
I think you will see Brandon Phillips, Jim Johnson, and Matt Adams gone. Possibly also Kemp.

For Braves, this year becomes next year: Albies and Sims in, Phillips out

There’s a story in Greek mythology in which Icarus attempts to escape Crete by using wings made of feathers and wax. The problem was Icarus was like all punk millennials and he ignored his father’s warnings and flew too close to the sun. So of course the wings melted, he fell from the sky, plunged into the sea and didn’t come close to making the playoffs.

Icarus set the standard for future market corrections in sports. Consider the Braves. They flew too close to the sun, reaching .500 for about seven minutes this season, even if once more than expected after April. They couldn’t handle the elevation, mutated into some strange lifeform, and tumbled from the sky. They entered Tuesday with 11 losses in the last 14 games, including four straight to Philadelphia, which makes them clinically dead in seven states, and probably Crete.

So it was Tuesday that the Braves opened August looking similar to the way they looked last season, and the one before that. The rest of this 2017: devoid of meaning. They’re logically out of the playoff race. Bovada lists them at 200-1 to win the World Series for sheer amusement.

The Braves went into their series opener against the Los Angeles Dodgers with a rookie pitcher (Lucas Sims) and a rookie second baseman (Ozzie Albies) both making their major league debuts. Welcome to 2018.

“We’re (in) a different climate than we were a few weeks ago,” manager Brian Snitker said. Give him credit for delivering that so delicately.

It’s about the kids now. It’s about experimenting with a lineup with Matt Adams, a defensive adventure, in left field, Danny Santana at third base and Johan Camargo at shortstop. Dansby Swanson took notes from Gwinnett.

As for what Snitker does when Matt Kemp returns from a hamstring injury, “We’ll deal with that when he gets here.”

But he’s done with the ridiculous experiment of playing Freddie Freeman at third base. Freeman was back at first against the Dodgers.

Then there’s Brandon Phillips. He’s not a part of the future. Maybe not even the near future.

Phillips wasn’t dealt at the trade deadline, presumably because nobody wanted him. To add insult to insult, Snitker told him the second base job is now in Albies’ young hands.

Snitker said he asked Phillips if he was willing to play some third base in the future. Phillips didn’t give him an answer. Truth is, he’s an impending free agent isn’t feeling the love. He has spent his entire career at second base (he played one game at third base in the minors in 2001).

“He’s thinking about it,” Snitker said.

Is he willing?

“I’m hoping,” he said. “We’ll address (the alternative) if he says he won’t. I don’t know, that’s another obstacle we’ll (deal with) when we get there.”

Is he still here?

“I hope so. We may need him.”

(Phillips did not comment before the game.)

If there’s even a hint this will get ugly, Phillips won’t be around much longer. The Braves will release him. The rest of the season will be difficult enough with kids floating in and out of the lineup. A soured veteran would only make things worse.

“We’re a different team than we were a few weeks ago,” Snitker said. “Ever-evolving, I guess.

“It’s just weird how things have a way of working out. We got Brandon and he’s been really, really good. But it’s time to see the kid. … In order to give him a taste of this game, this league, the speed, he needs to play.”

This season is now about next season. It’s about assessing young players like Albies, Sims and Camargo and maybe modest goals like avoiding a third-straight 90-loss season. The Braves started the night 48-56 (a 75-87 pace). The went 68-93 last season but that was after a 20-10 finishing kick.

Snitker said he’s “excited” to see what Albies can do. The fun-sized 20-year-old is equally thrilled. When he got the phone call that he was being called up, “I started jumping in the house, screaming.”

He was paying his rent at the time. Gwinnett teammate Ronald Acuna, considered the Braves’ No. 1 prospect, is his roommate.

“He was like, Oh you’re gonna leave me now?” Albies said, smiling. “I need a baby sitter for him.”

Albies was hitting .285 at Gwinnett this season. The Braves shouldn’t assume too much if he looks good the rest of the season because they made that mistake with Swanson and then drowned him in a marketing campaign. Swanson hit .302 in 38 games last year but struggled this season (.213) before being sent down. (But for the record, jumping ship on Swanson would be a mistake.) But the next two months at least provides a peak into Albies potential.

“The kid’s been an All-Star and he’s done well every step of the way,” Snitker said of Albies. “He’s been a leader on all of the teams he’s been on. He’s always been mature for his age. He has skills, and skills play up here. He’s an exciting little player and it’s going to be fun to watch him play.”

The Braves hope Sims can provide some positive foreshadowing about the pitching. Mike Foltynewicz is the only comforting member of next year’s rotation. The Braves saw their starting pitching go from weak to embarrassing this season. Their bullpen: even worse.

That’s how they got here – to meaningless games in August. It’s too familiar.

They are 9-2 against the Braves an 30-64 against everyone else.
Icarus was a "punk millennial"? Hubris was Icarus' downfall .... hard to think the Braves this year were overcome by hubris. Their weaknesses caught up with them, and Snitker's game decisions haven't helped. Fact is, this is a team a long way from being competitive with upper echelon teams. Sympathy should be extended toFreeman, a great player with a modest supporting ensemble.

Daughter had a game last night and did not get home until it was in late innings and down 3-0. How did the rookies look?

Why is Sean Rodriguez still playing? He has been awful so far and added an error in the field last night on 3rd. Career BA of .232 with a 2 year 11.5 million contract. Braves want to rebuild and how do you do so with this guy?

Matt Adams started the game at 1st but experienced dizziness and had to come out. Freeman moved to 1st and Rodriquez entered the game playing 3rd.

What's everyone's thoughts on Adams? Is he a free agent at the end of the year? I'd like to for the Braves to keep him but not if he has to play left field.
