The Latest New Footie Thread

Shocked by Roma! Thats an all time upset imho.

I think zidane has rested Ronaldo way too much vs all the Liga minnows, which has cost madrid the league as they cant win regularly without him.
However, Messi having only missed one game for a kid to be born, well he looked exhausted and like crap yesterday.

I don’t like Zidane ignoring la liga but after the early BS red suspension to ronaldo it seemed he said league is over, and if he wins CL a third straight time i suppose its worth it.

Tie isn’t over vs Juve, Madrid had a crisis at CB and Casemiro and Varane might ne starting in the back today. If Madrid scores early then its over.

Liverpool with impressive resolve after early goal given up.

that was insane. I feel terrible or Juventus as they embarrassed the Madrid midfield all game. However, they were lucky to get that all time gaffe from Navas, he's definitely gone this summer. Horrible.
I thought the call was an was an easy pk as he ran through Vasquez and made no play on the ball, nice pass by Ronaldo.
Buffon pushing the ref will get him a long suspension next year. Not sure how Stu Holden didn't see that push, it wasn't the berating or word usage, can't touch a ref. Buffon a bad look.
Cr7, that may be the most pressure packed PK i can recall, such a long wait to put your team into semis. remarkable finish with that pressure.
Madrid were awful, and fortunate to move on. Hopefully they avoid Munich in semis, but after PSG and Juve it may as well be Munich. Zidane has a mess on his hands.
Champions League Goals:
Ronaldo 15
Marcelo 2.
Benzema 2.
A few with 1 goal.
That's the scoring chart, one man team, he can't keep this up 3 more games, needs help.

I am going to predict a Bayern v. Liverpool final, which means it will probably be Madrid v. Roma.

Yea Pool with a very easy semi draw, no excuse to lose to Roma.

I wish Madrid could play twice in Munich and move the home match

Rumors that Sergio Ramos will add to his record bans from coming onto the field. Leave it to him to find a new way for a red

Ya, would have preferred the 2nd leg at Anfield, but no excuses. Read somewhere they haven't conceded a goal at home yet in the CL. Alot of subplot. Salah, links to Allison before Karius really turned a corner, American owners, then the revenge match with Bayern who got undone by some decisions last year's semi vs Real. Bayern been pretty sluggish so far in the CL and have the Bundesliga rapped up again, which has been put as a downfall for them as they 'lose an edge'. For real it's CR7 and nobody else for some odd reason. And rumors of lewandowski going to Real.

I hope I'm wrong, but I have a hard time seeing Arsenal beat Athletico Madrid.

I agree.

I also pointed out a few months back that Arsenal could very well finish behind Burnley. I think the past few weeks a lot of Arsenal folks started looking ahead to Chelsea in 5th. However, after the results this weekend Arsenal is closer to 7th than they are 5th.

Granted they should have beaten Newcastle with the lineup they fielded today, but I can't say I understood what Wenger was doing with the selections.

Chambers at RB?
Ozil, Ramsey, Wilshere, Kos, & Bellerin all out of the lineup? I understand Kos due to age & recent injury worries, but they sure could have done with one or two of the others.

Mustafi needs to go this summer. Where exactly I don't care, but to another club.

I honestly didn't think he'd leave until next season's end. Good news for Gooner supporters...IF The Arsenal finds the right guy to replace him. Tuchel?

Last I heard, Tuchel was the front runner to take over at PSG. That may change now, but who knows. Other names I have heard tossed around...

- Brendan Rodgers - please god now, I think I just threw up in my mouth thinking about this.
- Patrick Viera - could be an interesting hire, but does he have enough experience.
- Mikel Arteta - definitely a club favorite, but not nearly enough experience IMO.
- Carlo Ancelotti - would be an interesting hire.
- Joachim Loew - another please god no. IMO he is a National Team MGR at this point and doesn't need to come back to the club level at Arsenal.

There are others that I am sure will be mentioned. Personally I would love to see Tuchel if they can get him.

It finally happened.

What's wrong with Klinsman? I think he would do well. He had no chance with the USNMT because he didn't have the full squad of decent players to play the style of footie to win. He would have that at Arse.

He'd be a better choice than Brendan Rogers. Diego Simone isn't coming. I don't think they want to stay in the family and hire someone with very little experience. Carlo Ancelotti doesn't stay long at a club.

I am completely at a loss as to who Arse will hire, but I will say this, the days of a manager staying 22-25 years at a club, like Wenger and Ferguson, are gone.

I would like to see Tuchel or Viera, in that order. If they cannot get either of those 2, I would be fine with settling for Klinsman as a soccer person. However, he did play for sp*rs so there will be Arsenal fans who don't want him because of that. Also, I am thinking it would be better for him to dip his toe back in the Club Managerial role elsewhere first before coming straight to Arsenal.

Which is why I don't want him. I wouldn't want Spurrier to come to Florida State, either.

90 minutes away from playing in the final and feel a bit of a letdown after conceeding 2 cheap goals in typical fashion, particularly from Lovren. 70 odd minutes of pure total football that hasn't been seen on the European stage in sometime with continued domination from Porto, City, and group stage matches. Don't see a repeat 3 nill in Rome happening, but still a chance for something crazy and nobody has yet to score as the road team there.

Throwing beer at a bus made for ridiculous conversation from pipe bombs to over turning a moving bus under police escort... so hopefully the fan Roma fans seriously injured will live because that kind of stuff is what actually matters... Glad they are charged with attempted murder.

Getting seriously thin at midfield with Ox joining Can and Lallana for being done for

I'm good with Liverpool with the UCL -> as long as they tank the remainder of the PL and allow Chelsea to sneak into the 4th spot. :D

Can you imagine if that actually happened AND Arsenal won the Europa league so that the PL would end up with 6 teams in next years UCL? As a Chelsea supporter I can only dream (since Liverpool isn't going to tank).

Oh as an aside, if the Ballon D'Or was given as a campaign award -> i.e. the 2017/2018 campaign, I think my vote would be for Salah if Liverpool wins the UCL.

However, since it's a calendar award, who knows if Salah can help Egypt advance to say the QFs and say get ~ 15 goals by Dec. in the PL and another ~ 6 in the UCL group stages next campaign to "stay" in the conversation EVEN if Liverpool wins the UCL.

5 teams are max so under that scenario Chelsea are out.

Rishi,
I agree on Salah. Ronaldo has been a 1 man team in CL and if he wins a third straight id probably go CR if they have a similar rest of 2018. But with CL and world cup still to play theres a lot of intrigue left

On CL, munich went veteran team lineup and Madrid went the slow defensive lineup that will require possession to do anything. CR may not see much of the ball early.

We shall
See

Bayern lineup seems standard with only Alcantara being a question or not. Can't believe Assensio is on the bench for real.

Asensio, Bale and especially Benzema are all in terrible form, so instead of benching 2 of the 3 Zidane went defensive with Vasquez instead.

Id expect Asensio to come on first

I don't follow la liga much, particularly this year with Barca taking the title easily, but Assensio to me has been the only other threat besides CR7 in most of the CL footy I've seen.

Real just rolls along. They should just rename the CL the Real Invitational.

Ya they keep finding a way without being that impressive. Didn't even have to dive, foul, and play act all game either.

If you would have told me Real would have yet another Navas gaffe(who guesses on a shot at this level and leaves near post?), and Ronaldo would have his least service of season, i'd have expected a 3-0 Munich win. Finally two other overpaid Madrid players scored and Madrid holds on.
isco and Modric were the worst players on the field, modric missed 10 counter attacking passes in the second half and must go to Portugal or Turkey this summer, he's been done for 2 years.
Asensio sighting! he was great, and as always is better off the bench but isn't a starter. Benzema even played hard off bench. Ronaldo will get killed for not scoring but his only chance was a bicep trapped great goal, correctly called back. He ran his butt off so i don't get the criticism but he's used to the absurdity as if he missed easy chances that didn't exist.

On Munich I thought Kimmich and Hummels played out of their minds. Ribery missed so many great chances, he was poor.

The tie is far from over, as I've seen Madrid play awful home games this season and have 4 home losses.

Zidane was outcoached a second straight game CL game, and 3 of 4 overall, so he'd better start a team that can score goals, not one to avoid defeat. He's gotta finally get the tactics right or this game won't matter. Gotta create way more chances to be safe.

I don't see much in Bayern and they have to score twice without conceeding and I don't see that without Vidal, Alaba, Boaetang, Nuerer. They are kind of in the same boat as Juve for me.

Yes, typical Arsenal. They essentially crapped the bed today.

After watching today it became apparent very quickly. Atletico is a lot better coached and should be overwhelming favorites. For the most part, Arsenal had their best 11 (I would have had Cech instead of Ospina out there) and could only manage 1 goal against a 10 man side. They just don't seem to have an answer when anyone parks the bus against them.

The textbook definition of football, The Arsenal style...80 minutes with a man advantage, and one goal. Opponent manager also given the boot. And give up a late tying goal, which just so happens to be an away goal.

SMH.
