Football Recruiting Fact or Fiction: Florida State's loss will impact its recruiting ceiling

Recruiting analysts John Garcia Jr. and Sam Spiegelman discuss FSU's loss and if it will have an impact on 2025 recruiting class:

A good comparison?

Watching some of the videos and I'm probably thinking what most others are. . ."Man. . .Jaylin Lucas is small!" So, I went to compare him to one of the greatest "small" backs who ever played the game. . .Warrick Dunn.

Warrick Dunn's Bio has him at 5' 9" and 187 lbs when he left FSU

We have Lucas listed at 5' 9" and 175 lbs.

I was in school with Dunn, and he ran track with my roommate, so I had the opportunity to meet him and stand next to him a few times. I'm 6' and he sure seemed a bit smaller than 5' 9" when I stood next to him. He had stout legs, but I also wonder if the 187 was also a bit inflated.

A lofty comparison, no doubt. It seems in today's game a small back like that just would never get the opportunity to be a feature back. . .but could Lucas be a Dunn caliber player? Is his acceleration, shiftiness, and top end speed the same, or even better than Dunn's was? For the younger people on this board, go look up some of Dunn's highlights, he was electric and a joy to watch, he was also deceptively strong and could break out of some tackles that you wouldn't think he could.

There is only one ball, and a lot of playmakers to distribute it to, but I hope we can get him the ball quite a few times in a game, I feel he may have quite the highlight reel by season's end.

Notes From the Uninformed

Let's begin with the obvious. GT is a much better team than anyone anticipated except their coach. And you have to give credit to their coaching staff for preparing them, but more importantly, scouting and breaking down our film. Their defense was amazingly well designed to stop our running. They had 7 TFL versus our 3. Their safeties and LBs shot gaps and read our blocking better than any team we've played in the last 2 years. I don't know how much it hurt us to not have Atkins on the sideline, but I suspect quite a bit. They were gettin penetration on every play after our initial drive. Scott had an embarrassing day. Jones had moments. Maurice appeared to have the best game of any of our OL, but again, they beat us to the snap repeatedly and looked much quicker and faster. That goes back to how well their coaches prepared them and they knew our playbook well. That new DC made a name for himself today. So the scenario that most anticipated of FSU's offense being able to dominate the worst rushing defense in the ACC didn't materialize. They pretty much kept us off balance and had better tackling angles combined w/ excellent reads to keep us in second and long constantly. 8 and 9 in the box w/ safeties creeping up dares a defense to pass. We passed on that opportunity.

DJ is no Jordan Travis, but King looked the part. The Total yards for the two were equal, but King's 54 yards rushing gave them another gap and us another gap to defend. We were suppose to be the faster team. Their RBs looked faster and their OL accounted for at least ~20 yards after contact between the tackles. They routinely changed a 4 yard gain into a seven. RBs ran with tenacity and their OL out manned us. Clearly Norvell didn't want to put the game on DJ's shoulders. But surprisingly when he finally had to, he delivered. Not a thing a beauty, but he performed in the clutch. Douglas had an excellent game and Benson showed he can catch in traffic.

So, if we couldn't dominate offensively, perhaps our much heralded front 4 could contain their OL. Their OL was better than ours; make that much better. Their experience and scheme just shut down Jones, Payton, Farmer and Jackson. Between the 4, they had 6 TT and zero TFL. Farmer and Payton each had a single tackle the entire game. It is usually a bad sign if your leading tackler is your safety but when you see Brown with 13 TT and 9 solos and the next closest tackler to him (Lundy) has only 7 TT, you know that preseason overwhelming front 7 was abused like a rented mules. Their OL threw Farmer around like a rag doll. I think Payton may have had one QB pressure, but King completed the pass. Jones was often looking at the end of a play from the ground up, flat on his back. He was on the canvass more than a glass jawed punch drunk boxer. Graham didn't register a single tackle. Riley had 7 TT and 4 solos. Graham has earned a prime seat on the pine. Nichelson and Cryer moved well past him.

So other than that Mrs Linclon, how was the play? We played poorly, but GT is a much better team than expected. Their OL w/ that QB will put them in every game on their schedule and if they can break down future team's scheme like they did us, they'll be hard to beat. We got outcoached. That hasn't happened in a long time. But no one is better at learning from his mistakes than CMN. Gonna be a chore to get ready for BC. Their QB is licking his chops after watching us today.

Thoughts on the conservative play calling

I understand that this was DJ’s first game for FSU, but he has 50 career starts in his career with many of those in big games. Let him attack through the air. GT was putting 7 and 8 in the box to stop the run. After the big reviewed catch by Douglas on the sideline that put us at 1st and 10 at midfield, the next 3 plays were ….. running play for 1 yard gain, running play for 1 yard loss, and running play that was stuffed. At midfield, the playbook should be wide open. I know players have to execute but to me, the coaches did not put out players in situations to be successful. Way too conservative and no adjustments made. Thoughts?

Golf PGSF FedEx Cup Week 34 The BMW Championship

bmw-field2.jpg

It’s the second leg of the FedExCup Playoffs, and just like this week’s golf course, the drama is set to reach new heights.
The BMW Championship returns to Colorado for the first time since 2014, where Castle Pines Golf Club hosts the TOUR for the first time since 2006 – at 6,200 feet above sea level and measuring more than 8,000 yards on the scorecard.
The top 50 in the FedExCup standings earned their way into this week’s field, led by Scottie Scheffler, while Hideki Matsuyama looks to maintain his momentum after winning the FedExCup Playoffs opener at the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis, Tennessee.

Jake Knapp, Mackenzie Hughes and Tom Kim were bumped from inside the top 50 to outside the magic number Sunday at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, surrendering their spots at the BMW Championship and in next season’s Signature Events.
Only the top 30 in the FedExCup standings will qualify for next week’s TOUR Championship and stay in contention for the PGA TOUR’s ultimate prize, the FedExCup.
So, while we’ll all be watching the top of the leaderboard, there will plenty of drama around the bubble, too.
Here’s everything you need to know as the PGA TOUR returns to Castle Pines.
FIELD NOTES: Hideki Matsuyama looks to go back-to-back to start the FedExCup Playoffs after winning the FedEx St. Jude Championship with birdies on his final two holes. Matsuyama withdrew from last year’s BMW Championship after the first round due to injury, but he is playing some of the best golf of his life now – which is music to the ears of International Team Presidents Cup Captain Mike Weir, with Matsuyama leading the International standings … Viktor Hovland is hoping his fine Playoffs play continues at the BMW Championship as he enters as the defending champion. Hovland, who won the BMW Championship by two shots last year, hasn’t had his best season – and certainly not as compared to last year. But he started the Playoffs with a bang, finishing tied for second in Memphis … Patrick Cantlay’s name has become synonymous with the BMW Championship the last few seasons. Cantlay, who is ninth on the FedExCup standings, won this tournament in back-to-back years (at different golf courses) in 2021 and 2022. Cantlay finished tied for 12th last week in Memphis … Can we see a bounce-back from Rory McIlroy this week? The three-time FedExCup champion finished at 9-over last week at the FedEx St. Jude Championship and was second-to-last on the leaderboard. McIlroy enters the week fifth on the FedExCup standings … Jason Day, who is 25th in the FedExCup standings, is the only player in this week’s field who played The International at Castle Pines the last time it hosted the TOUR, in 2006 … Billy Horschel won the most recent BMW Championship in Colorado, 10 years ago. Horschel, No. 19 in the FedExCup standings, won the 2014 iteration by two shots at Cherry Hills Country Club … With Xander Schauffele’s tie for second at the FedEx St. Jude Championship – and with the bonus points available for a win at the BMW Championship – he is finally within striking distance of Scottie Scheffler’s hefty FedExCup lead. With 2,000 FedExCup points to the winner, Schauffele, who is at 5,037.33 points, could technically jump Scheffler (at 6,532.75 points) for the No. 1 spot heading into the TOUR Championship. Scheffler finished fourth in Memphis.
FEDEXCUP BUBBLE UPDATES: Keegan Bradley scored the final spot in the BMW Championship after a 2-under 68 Sunday at the FedEx St. Jude Championship. The U.S. Team Presidents Cup captain’s assistant and 2025 Ryder Cup captain’s playing season continues this week at the BMW Championship … Only the top 30 in the FedExCup standings after the BMW Championship will advance to the TOUR Championship, with Denny McCarthy currently at the No. 30 spot … McCarthy leads Tommy Fleetwood at No. 31 by just two points, however. Chris Kirk, at No. 32, is only nine points back … Hovland, last year’s FedExCup champ, moved from No. 57 to No. 16 after his tie for second last week in Memphis and is now likely safe to return to East Lake … Sam Burns started the FedExCup Playoffs at No. 29 but moved to No. 18 after his tie for fifth at TPC Southwind … A year after winning the 2023 U.S. Amateur, Nick Dunlap finished tied for fifth at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, moving from No. 67 to No. 48. Dunlap did not earn any FedExCup points for his triumph at The American Express earlier this year as an amateur but won again at the Barracuda Championship. Had he missed his par attempt on the 72nd hole, he would have finished 51st in the standings … Brian Harman, Tom Hoge and Taylor Pendrith are Nos. 29, 28 and 27, respectively, heading into the BMW Championship. They’ll each need to play solidly at Castle Pines to advance to the TOUR Championship.
The top 125 on the FedExCup standings after the FedExCup Fall, which concludes at The RSM Classic in November, will retain exempt status for 2025.
FEDEXCUP THIS WEEK: The winner of the BMW Championship receives 2,000 FedExCup Points.
COURSE: Castle Pines Golf Club, par 72, 8,130 yards. The BMW Championship returns to Colorado for the first time in a decade, while Castle Pines is back on the PGA TOUR schedule for the first time since 2006. Castle Pines hosted The International (a Modified Stableford event on the PGA TOUR) from 1986-2006. The course features 400 feet of elevation change and the average altitude is 6,200 feet. At 8,130 yards, it will be the longest course in PGA TOUR history. The entire course has been renovated – new bunkers, rebuilt tees and greens, and renovated water features – since the TOUR was last there for The International in 2006.
72-HOLE RECORD: 261, Patrick Cantlay/Bryson DeChambeau (2021 – Caves Valley Golf Club)
18-HOLE RECORD: 59, Jim Furyk (Round 2, 2013 – Conway Farms Golf Club)
LAST TIME: Hovland won the second leg of the FedExCup Playoffs by two shots over Scheffler and Matt Fitzpatrick en route to capturing the FedExCup the next week. Hovland began the day three shots back of Scheffler and Fitzpatrick but zipped up the leaderboard after making seven birdies in his final nine holes. His final-round 61 was a career low, and it set a new course record. McIlroy finished fourth while Max Homa and Brian Harman finished tied for fifth.

Well, I guess it's good that we are in the first year...

of the Professional Collegiate Football League, better known as the NFL Lite.
Over the next few years, make no mistake, things will change drastically in the PCFL. However, we are there.

Like the NFL, it's no longer about the name on the front of the jersey, but only the name on the back and the NIL deals they can secure.
It no longer matters that you lose a game, because in the new PCFL, you certainly can lose one game, and maybe even two...or three?
I can't wait for the first 3 loss team get's into the PCFL playoffs and beats an undefeated team! Anyone remember the 2008 Super Bowl? lol

It no longer matters who the best team is, or even who the best two or 3 teams are. Just whoever gets hot at the right time and runs the table.
Admittedly, the PCFL does not have the "parity" (better known as mediocrity) that the NFL has...YET.
But make no mistake, that's exactly what the new owners will be striving for.

Anyway, FSU lost a game...big deal! Win out or even win all but one more and my bet is FSU will be in the ACC championship game (in essence a playoff game) and at that point, as NFL Lite, they will be follwoing the path of the 2007 NY Giants!

Don't you just love college football now? lol

Oh by the way, I saw some FSU fans trash our own players for getting NIL deals and now not carrying. Interesting. Do they think Norvell and most of the coaches who also got new deals, fall into that category too?

Very sad!

had the courage to rewatch the game

everyone agrees the offensive and defensive line play was subpar. i would let armella, early, simmons and the kid from key west get some meaningful snaps. they will be your starters next year. our linebacker play was not good and that includes lundy. my biggest takeaway was haynes king made great play after great play. he was their travis. we took georgia tech for granted.

Football Column: No spinning how concerning a loss that was to begin FSU's season

It’s hard to spin how troubling a loss that was for FSU on a few fronts.

For one, GT flat-out looked and played like the better team.

Even more concerning, what we thought were the strengths of the 2024 FSU team looked like weaknesses Saturday.

I see a defense that got greedy and lazy

Let's note who was disappointing on defense. Darrell Jackson, Joshua Farmer, Patrick Payton, DJ Lundy, Shyheim Brown. Oh look, it's a list of all the guys who extorted us for more NIL money this off-season. What a surprise! Defense played like they just got paid up front and mailed it in. I think we have a serious culture problem with this roster, specifically on defense. They play for money. Once they got their money, what else do they have to play for? GT looked hungry, like they were playing to win the football game. We looked lazy. We need to completely overhaul our recruiting and NIL process. Something is very wrong here. I sense a culture of greed and entitlement. There was no firey leadership like we had last year with Verse, Bethune, etc. No leaders on this defense.

Not that it matters, but…

First game I have ever been to, home, away, neutral, where I couldn’t hear the marching chiefs. The game announcer represented GT and played music when we were on offense. Secondly, they pumped GT’s band in the speakers to drown out the chiefs. It didn’t make sense to see a stadium full of Noles but could barely hear them. Whoever agreed to allow GT’s home game announcer to do the game and allow their band to be pumped through the stadium speakers needs to be fired.

Football PFF grades, snap counts, analysis from FSU's season-opening loss to GT

Here's the first PFF grades/snap counts/statistical analysis breakdown of Florida State football season.

As you would probably expect, it's ugly for much of the FSU roster, especially the defense.

The day after.

Normally, in recent years I wake up the next morning, the sun has risen, and I can find a silver lining about how it wasn’t so bad.

It doesn’t feel that way today. It was a stunning loss where our expected strengths were weaknesses. We didn’t just play poor enough to keep GT in the game, we played poor enough to lose. Starting with a stinker that you eeek out a win is a lot easier to take than one that starts the season with a loss.

There is lots of blame to go around, but at the end of the day GT knew they were underdogs and knew what they had to do to win. FSU came in expecting to win and just got flat out physically dominated. All game.

Can they right the ship? Maybe.

Could this be a positive to get stunned in game one? Maybe

Is GT this year’s shocker? Hopefully.

It just stunk to watch this defense full of NFL measurables go out there and get dominated all game long.

Here is to hoping this upper cut isn’t a knock out blow, but a shot that puts us down for an 8 count, but ignites a fire for the rest of the fight.

Soccer FSU soccer cruises past Rice 3-0

FSU sports information:

The No. 1 Florida State soccer team (3-0-0) used three goals from three freshmen to defeat Rice (2-1-0) 3-0 on Thursday night. FSU begins the season unbeaten through three games for a fifth consecutive season.

The Seminoles were able to establish their dominance early with numerous shots towards goal, recording 20 total shots in the first half. The persistence paid off after Mimi Van Zanten laid a pass off to Ashlyn Puerta who used a deft turn past the defender and unleashed a beautiful strike into the top right corner for the opening goal. Puerta has scored the first goal of the game in her first two career starts.

The next 45 minutes saw more of the same as Van Zanten played a great cross into Lara Dantas, her right-footed effort was going wide before Wrianna Hudson tapped in her first-ever goal at the back post to double the advantage. Dantas put the game to rest with an incredible shot from well past the 18-yard box that was crushed into the back of the net for the third and final goal of the evening.

FSU fired off 39 shots to Rice’s one in the contest and has yet to concede a goal after the opening three games of the season. Florida State has had three different freshmen score in back-to-back games.

Florida State will continue its four-game homestand with a top-20 battle against Georgia next Thursday. First kick is set for 7 p.m. and available to stream on ACC Network Extra.
